Episode 3

Episode was very well paced. Even two years pass by in a matter of seconds at one point.

Valjean goes to recuse a man charged for the crimes that he himself had committed. He reveals his true identity to the court and to Javert. Valjean goes to prison but not before he rushes off to see the dying Fantine.

Two years later, Valjean comes across little Cosette, Fantine's daughter. Valjean generously purchases Cosette from Monsieur and Madame Thénardier. However Monsieur Thénardier feels Valjean's fury when he returns to demand more money.

However Valjean is on the run and Javert is still on the scent. Not before time, Javert deals with the awful Thénardier's.

Not only well paced but Dominic West really sells Valjean. He could be honourable, a brute and yet also pathetic as well. His sense of honour causes more problems than it solves.

It's alright...

Yeah it's OK but I'm not a big fan of the two leads... I love Dom West in the wire and the affair but he is not Jean val Jean that I have in my head from the book. Bits are good and he plays a conflicted character ok but he just seems a bit game of thrones with his solemn northern accent. Even more importantly David Oyelowo for me is rubbish as javert. I'm not sure if he bothered to read the book but the javert / Jean val Jean relationship (the main focus of the book) hinges around javert's ideas of wrong and right. For me javert should be in uniform and is the letter of the law and upstanding fighter of that system. Dave O plays the part like an East end gangster and seems to miss the point of the character of javert. No it's not because he is black...

Terrible!

This episode was simply terrible! It differed from the book so significantly that I could hardly finish it. This series had so much potential. The "look" of it takes me back to the early 1800s. If you have never read the book, it will actually be ok.
