Good example of Greek Weird Wave
DaphK1025 June 2022
This film will definitely not be everyone's cup of tea. I would say it falls under the Greek Weird Wave and people who admire Lanthimo's work will definitely enjoy watching it. The dialogues are short and weird, the sounds of the city and nature very vivid and heightened, and the movements of the protagonists almost do not represent typical behaviours. From a psychological point of view, it creates dilemmas around ethical behaviour and consequences of actions. I hold a lot of respect for Servetalis and Stankoglou, and their great acting is to recognise. The sceneries and depiction of Athens as a city will give a sense of loneliness and romanticism to people who are born and raised there (at least that's what happened to me, I admired my city through the director's lenses). The cinematography and direction is outstanding, definitely a director to follow. I hope we see more of his work soon, and how exciting he has opened that path for the Greek cinema.

Waiting .. for mr/s right
kosmasp16 May 2023
No pun intended of course! And a movie that is about waiting - another pun? I guess so - but that aside the movie does move as slow as one may imagine (fear). Pacing wise this is something you have to accept it for what it is - the main character seems to have quite the boring life. Until there seems to be a new interesting neighbor.

If you have the patience to stick with the movie and the characters, there is an interesting movie - and some interesting beats to absorb. He may be lethargic or not - the question is if you can stick with him and the movie. So suspend your disbelief and go with the flow.

Beautiful filmography
fpicha23 January 2022
The filmography/photography was the star in this movie. The acting of the two male leads was very good, but the female lead only had two expressions on her face during the entire film:slightly shocked or somewhat afraid. The plot wasn't particularly interesting either and all the characters were 2-dimensional, including The Waiter. I think if we'd learned more about what made him tick, the reasons behind his actions, this would be a much more interesting movie, because as it was it lacked depth.

A snail could outrun this
geewhiz4611 June 2022
The waiter - well folks - that was me - waiting through endless twenty second pauses of nothing happening - waiting for somebody to say SOMETHING - waiting for any back story whatsoever - waiting for some explanation of the dynamics of the relationships - waiting to find out why any of these people tolerated each other - or even attracted each other. Waiting to find out what on earth the quarrelling couple in the restaurant had to do with anything - or why there was a long lingering shot of the male towards the end.

Waiting to find out why this film was ever made.

It had nothing to say and the end was totally predictable. I am sorry for the people who paid good money to view this in a cinema.

Gorgeous & Meaningful --
craftypilbow-068287 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film is a meditation on what it means to be a free person in a burdensome world. The main character, a waiter, lives a regimented life till he is called upon by events beyond his control to save a young woman by killing her tormentor. What happens next is mind-blowing, and I won't give it away. The ending is perfect. You must see this film. It will stick with you.

Truly, a pile of c**p
Polsinga3 December 2020
When you see a movie categorized as "arthouse", its best to stay away, That way, you won't be sorry to have wasted 1-3 hours of your time, watching some meaningless meanderings of people/places/situations, without any real idea of what is going on. Sure, in this "movie", there are some definite things, but what they have to do with each other and why things happen the way the "director" puts them in, is totally unknown.

The arthouse label seems to have been devised in order for piss takers to put nonsense together and to persuade the critics & the public (while chuckling under their breaths), that their movie is a cerebral exploration of %^$£@*{+!><:"{}£$%($£@.

Don't waste your time. Find a real movie to watch.

Director: best get another job, where you actually do something.

Slow pace, predictable
robertbv5 June 2022
Maybe it is not my taste, but it was a waste of time. Almost nothing happens the whole movie. Very predictable. The plot was not that interesting. Except for the main actor that played well, the rest of the actors were just bad.

cold
Kirpianuscus24 January 2020
A cold film. Precise storytelling and clear definition of life for a waiter. A lonely one, part of his daily routine, from job and dialogues with his colegue, to the terrible events and the manner to survive to them and proposition of new perspective , not comfortable of happiness. A film like a challenge to the public because ot propose ,in inspired manner, questions about connection with your job, about superficial known next door neighbour, about live and freedom , about hobbies and colegues from work and clients and general knowledge and strangers and well prepared dishes. So, just a special film.

Like watching a painted wall dry
Filmville19 June 2023
Some meaning. That could have been told in 5 minutes. Truly boring empty stills most of the time. Some surreal script does not make a drama movie. Or even a movie. Would have goven 1 star but some of the local shots were fine.

Is it a Greek novie style to purposefully nake movies slow, less talked and totally void of feelings. Like is that the movie "industry" in Greece that makes movies to be always like this. Somehow it is even more ironic that when Hollywood or some other "putside" interest makes Greek topic movies, they are fun, understandable and interesting. And the actors actually act like normal human beings. :-/

Mind blowing
cignat-98-2464819 January 2020
This movie imay bore you to death if looking for daily dose of media painkillers. The story is plain. Acting is restrictive. Pace is slow.

This is a zen story in images. It will force you to face yourself. It will remind you about your quest. It offers you a way out without loosing your integrity.

The Waiter... or any other job, whatever
lina_kiyota18 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's a beautiful and well directed movie, with great acting and a curious plot. Etc. But why it's called "The Waiter"? I kind of expected that the main's character job would be the main point of the plot, like in the fantastic "The cakemaker". But I waited till the end of the movie to realize that he could have any other job and it wouldnt make any difference...!

Autism depicted in three characters
rob-broekhof-111 June 2022
Two male and one female.

All of them are thourough, focused and "not very good with other people".

Still, they're totally different.

Watch and learn how different people can be, even from narrowing them down as autistic.
