There's a particular challenge that original anime face in that, unlike manga adaptations, they don't have a built-in audience and fanbase. Therefore, sometimes it can take a while for them to gain some momentum in the anime community. When “A Place Further than the Universe” first aired in 2018 there were many who dismissed it as another “cute girls doing cute things” show that had little to offer beyond mildly humorous antics. Those who gave the show a proper chance, however, found a deeply affecting coming of age comedy-drama from a creative team at the top of their game with plenty of emotional catharsis and heart-warming growth.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The purpose of this column has always been to highlight anime that newcomers could jump into without prior knowledge of the medium, shows that hopefully act as a gateway to a medium full of incredible possibilities. Recently, I've been trying to avoid brand-new shows, and instead focus on shining a light on older classics and relatively more modern but still underseen anime — basically, shows that you don't hear about trending on social media.
That being said, a brand new show comes along sometimes and surpasses anticipations and expectations to deliver a viewing experience so unique and thrilling I am left with no choice but to immediately write about it in the hopes that everyone catches up before the season ends. That is the case with this month's anime: "Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.

"Haven't you ever taken a path that wasn't laid out for you?" GKids has revealed an official US theatrical trailer for Goodbye, Don Glees!, a Japanese anime from Atsuko Ishizuka arriving in US theaters next month. The film opened in Japan in February and has been playing at international festivals this summer. Teen misfits Roma, Toto, and Drop call themselves the "Don Glees," an informal name for their backyard adventures. One day, when the trio gets blamed for a nearby forest fire, they set off into the woods to prove their innocence. As disaster strikes their expedition, tensions flare between the friends as they realize that growing up has taken them on wildly different paths in life. Ishizuka follows up her series A Place Further Than the Universe with her first original feature film. With luminescent animation and lush backdrops, Goodbye, Don Glees! is a tender coming-of-age about the fearlessness...

Following her excellent work in the “Blue Literature” and “A Place Further than the Universe” series, it was about time for Atsuko Ishizuka to direct and pen a movie of her own, with “Goodbye Don Glees” being her first effort with both capacities. Animated by one of the top anime studios at the moment, Madhouse, and featuring an approach that moves somewhere between Miyazaki and “Stand By Me”, “Goodbye Don Glees” is definitely an interesting anime
“Goodbye Don Glees” is screening on Fantasia International Film Festival
The story revolves around three boys. Roma is a farmer’s son who is considered the bottom of his class’s hierarchy, at least to the majority of his classmates, “because he smells of manure”. The only kid who seems fond of him is his best friend Toto, with the two actually being a “gang” calling themselves Don Glees and spending much time in...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.) So far in this column, we’ve explored some of the more genre-heavy shows anime has to offer. But the beauty of this medium is its malleability.
