Knowledgeable Producers and ‘Unprecedented’ Government Incentives Turn Brazil Into a Burgeoning Co-Production Power
Image
Despite boasting a huge internal market, Brazil long seemed an island of its own when it came to fostering international collaboration. Alas, these days are long gone, with a ramping number of co-productions inching the country closer and closer to major producing potencies such as the US and Europe.

“New international partners have been seeking us directly,” says Alex Medeiros, Director of Drama, Documentaries, and Films at Globoplay Originals, the streaming powerhouse behind Walter Salles’s history-making, Oscar-winning “I’m Still Here.” Globo is the biggest production force in Latin America, and currently has partnerships with Gaumont, Beta Film, Fremantle, and Disney, the latter a co-production deal for four films, including “Na Linha de Fogo,” directed by Afonso Poyart (“Solace”).

Globo has a key advantage of producing over 11 thousand hours of novelas a year, a fast-moving audiovisual bootcamp that produces not only a large volume of talent in front and behind the camera,...

Wagner Moura’s ‘Marighella’ Slated for Nov. 20 Release Amid Calls for Boycott
Wagner Moura
Santiago, Chile – “Marighella,” Wagner Moura’s contentious directorial debut, is slated to bow in Brazil on Nov. 20 but Moura fears that its domestic release could be hampered by ongoing calls to boycott it by conservatives and the government of President Jair Bolsonaro who claims, among other things, that Brazil’s 21 years under military rule – between April 1964 and March 1985 – was not a dictatorship.

Budgeted at an estimated $4 million, a higher-than-average budget for Brazil, “Marighella” tracks the titular Carlos Marighella before he was gunned down by the military. Described as a Marxist politician, a writer and a revolutionary, he sought to end Brazil’s nefarious military dictatorship that began with a coup d’état in1964.

A scuttled domestic release is probably not an outcome Moura wants for his directorial debut. The actor-director-producer shot to fame with his lead roles in Jose Padilha’s “Elite Squad” films but his stardom rose to new...

Seu Jorge in Marighella (2019)
Berlin Film Review: ‘Marighella’
Seu Jorge in Marighella (2019)
Does Brazil need a film that openly advocates armed confrontation against its far-right government? That’s the first question that needs to be asked when discussing “Marighella,” actor Wagner Moura’s directorial debut focused on the final year in the life of left-wing insurrectionist Carlos Marighella during Brazil’s ruthless military dictatorship. For whatever one might think of the film’s merits as an adrenaline-filled shoot-‘em-up hagiographic biopic of a resistance-fighter/terrorist, the penultimate scene, in which a woman picks up a machine gun and looks directly at the camera, is unambiguous in its deeply troubling message. If there were doubts, Moura doesn’t lose any opportunity to compare the current administration to its ideologically similar predecessor from the 1960s, thereby forcing viewers to judge the motivations of a film whose irresponsibility surpasses even its superficiality.

Of course the movie’s genesis began long before the fascist-leaning Jair Bolsonaro...

Makers of Berlin Competition Title ‘Marighella’ Worry About Distribution at Home
Seu Jorge in Marighella (2019)
Worried that growing political tension in Brazil may hamper the domestic release of “Marighella,” Wagner Moura’s directorial debut about a leftist revolutionary, the movie’s producers may seek to crowd-fund its distribution independently.

“We are going to fight for it,” producer Andrea Barata Ribeiro said ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Berlinale on Friday. She added that she wants to launch “Marighella” in Brazil right after Berlin. “If necessary, we will launch it independently through crowd-funding.”

Actor-director Moura, best-known Stateside for his starring role in “Narcos,” has little doubt that conservatives in Brazil don’t want the story of “Marighella” to be told. The film follows a ragtag group of resistance fighters, led by former congressman Carlos Marighella, who seek to ignite a popular revolution against Brazil’s military dictatorship, which seized power in 1964 and ruled until 1985.

With civic discussion in Brazil having taken a sharp...

In Brazil, Co-Productions and Ott Provide Stability in a Tumultuous Time
Jair Bolsonaro
One of the first measures enacted by Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who took office on Jan. 1, was to merge Brazil’s Ministry of Culture with a newly created Ministry of Citizenship, embracing sports, communications, social policy and culture.

While performing artists came under fire from Bolsinaro supporters in the runup to the elections, subject to threats, pickets, and a smoke bomb, it remains to be seen what impact the new government will have on the film industry.

By mid-January, trade bodies were reaching out to key governmental figures to guarantee the continuation of policies for promotion, investment and control of the industry, the creative industries being the second-most popular career choice in Brazil, says producer Fabiano Gullane.

“It’s illusory to think that Brazil’s film industry can do without subsidies,” says Leonardo Barros, at Conspiraçao, one of Brazil’s biggest film-tv producers. “You’d need a 30%-35% market share to start reducing them.
