This show has gripped me from Series 1...Series 4 seemed to start slow, but once I settled into Ep1, couldn't stop watching! 2 Eps into the 5th and I'm questioning - but am still planning on seeing it through to the end of Series 6.
The situation with Kate Fleming is getting even more utterly RIDICULOUS (groan!). Not only is she plowing up the ranks, un-meritoriously undermining and overshadowing Steve Arnott. He has had MUCH MORE time as DC and DS, yet she is promoted to DI almost immediately after securing DS, despite Sprt. Hastings warning her that he would need to see much more maturity from her before even considering moving her up to Inspector. What's next? She takes over Hastings' job?! Furthermore, Arnott is a MUCH better cop, and is fundamentally more grounded and ethical than she. I know I'm likely to face backlash regarding what I'm about to write - but here goes! It almost feels like a "diversity" situation, wherein they are moving her up to tick boxes whether she earns it or not (she DOESN'T) simply because she's a woman (and I'm a woman of mixed race in a male-dominated field who has held her own without special consideration because of my gender; I think this practice (of promoting due to gender and dare I say, race) should STOP - each individual should EARN their merits). She is so smug, despite all of it - nearly as badly as the despicable DCI Huntley in Series 4. I nearly lost it when Arnott started calling her, "ma'am" (he is respectful, so of course he would - because of rank). He surely begins to address her as "boss" - which is the final straw that breaks the camel's back. Let's not even get into the awful hair each Series...UGH - I can't stand it - I, personally, think every hairstyle they've put her in makes her look more and more like a man (perhaps that's the intent?). Yuk!
Hoping things will improve as we go along (I purposely haven't read ahead)!!
