As a father
ertanasan10 March 2019
As a father having a son, watched the movie in horror. Lead actor, the father, is extremely successful. Daily bad news from the society on the radio news and a happy life of a doc portrayed, but you can't keep away from the filth as you're living in a filthy environment. It happens. Things go messy if everyone imposes his own justice. Script is poor especially on scenes required police interaction. A father's unbearable agony, for me, this is movie's ultimate success.

On the path to violence
meme-361371 March 2019
A slow burn and atmospheric movie, it is truly led by the lead actor José Coronado who plays the dutiful father, stoic and a man of few words, however, as the movie progresses we see layers to him, a man on the edge trying to balance. He has come face to face with violence within him spurred on by a violent act done to his son. He begins his journey trying to understand what happened, but by the end he does not care he needs to avenge his son who can no longer run with him or speak to him. The bond between father and son is captured on screen, in contrast to his distant daughter who in her own way is trying to do the right thing but then doing the right thing in this movie means choosing a side. The ending is a question in itself, what does vigilante justice really amount to, it is a matter of perspective is it not? Through the looking glass as they say. It is worth a viewing, only for the brilliant acting by José Coronado, it is sad to see the rest of the supporting cast could not match up to his on screen presence aside from perhaps the daughter acted by Asia Ortega who did not have much dialogue either, perhaps intentional.

Downbeat and dark thriller with tension , suspense , twists and turns
ma-cortes24 January 2019
Javier Jiménez , José Coronado, is a prestigious surgeon living in Sevilla. He is married to Carmen : Ana Wagener , and both of whom have two children , Sara and Marcos . After a surgícal operation he receives a sad notice , his son Marcos : Monen , is in coma after being hit by a group of unknown attackers. Then he begins his own investigations about the identity of suspects and relentlessly attempts to find them, leading to unexpected consequences . Javier attempts to bring criminal evidences to a Police Inspector , but it leads to his detention. Later on , he is freed , but he makes a difficult decission, to take justice on his own hands.

This is a thrilling and bleak Spanish film with high doses of suspense , intrigue , plot twists , blood , and violence . This stirring story is filmed in slow-moving , following a similar realist and dark style to his former successful film : Kidnapped 2010. While the look is suitable sinister and intriguing, the plot spreads to the surprising breaking point , including an unexpected final that turns out to be a little frustrating. There stands out José Coronado giving a magnificent interpretation as a relentless avenger father who broken by pain , rage and impotence attempts to seek the nasty agressors and exact a merciless vendetta. As the surgeon José Coronado acts as judge , jury and executioner , Charles Bronson-alike . Here the veteran Coronado is well accompanied by a fine support cast , such as : Ana Wagener as unsettling mummy , Asia Ortega as teen daughter , Paul Monen as son , Vicente Romero and Luis Bermejo .

It packs a shading and adequate cinematography by Pedro Marquez , Miguel Angel Vivas's regular . Shot in Sevilla , though here neither monuments , nor sightseeing from this wonderful city , but night discoteques , building , roads and bridges , only . The motion picture was professional , though slowly paced by Miguel Angel Vivas .He is an expert on rare atmosphere, as he also proved in Reflejos 2002, Extinctión 2015 , and his greatest hit : Kidnapped 2010 that achieved undoubted success , several awards and important reputation , being also starred by Ana Wagener. Rating 6/10 . Acceptable and passable .

Mixed feelings after watching this movie
myotherpetisdog3 March 2019
Quite disturbing ending for this unusual story. Could this happen in real life? Even temporary insanity caused by extreme grief wouldn't explain the very last scene. I expected a different ending.

Family (justice)
kosmasp31 July 2019
You don't have to have kids of your own, to at least slightly comprehend what parents go through when it comes to raising children and then facing things that happen to them. And this really gets your blood boiling. You can empathize with the father to a certain degree.

But this is not as clear cut as it seems and we all know that you should not take justice into your own hands. And then there is the end, which as at least one other revewier has stated will leave you with a very bitter after taste. At least that's how it should be. The "excuse" is not enough to explain the behaviour - how decent are you? Can you overlook this and still "enjoy" the movie? Or rather look upon it with a good feeling? It is tough for sure ... and it's a grim movie overall ...

Taut, tense with superb performance from Jose Coronado
msghall2 March 2019
Filmed with admirable restraint, this Spanish film makes its points with articulate ease. The pacing is effortless, sweeping the viewer along for the ride, keeping you on the edge of your seat yet sitting back just enough to let you get your breath. The quiet tension never overwhelms, putting you in the front seat of the main character's pursuit of justice. Kudos for not going with a Hollywood Liam Neeson revenge fantasy, this sophisticated movie is more interested in the complex and adult reality of this man's pain and determination. The only downside is a pivotal moment of stupidity by the main character which seems more like an artificial plot device than something an educated man would do, even in the heat of his uncovering of the truth about the fate of his son.

Slow ...
KittyG2628 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you're hoping for something along the lines of Death Wish, you won't like this. Jaime's adored son Marcos is beaten into a coma. Why? Who dunnit? Jaime sets out to find the answers and wreak revenge. Except it takes forever. Most of the time actor Jose Coronado has little to do except stand around looking Meaningful.

Eventually he finds and kills the youth who stomped his son into a coma, only to discover later (via Marcos's ex, Andrea) that the reason for the beating was that Marcos and his friends had raped Andrea, and recorded themselves doing so.

Jaime deletes the incriminating video, and that's the end. Literally.

I always find Jose Coronado a compelling actor, but in this case he was let down by a weak storyline and a dull supporting cast.

My vote is 6.

Good story with a twist

Story was good, the suspense was there, then the twist. However the ending was rather a big let down than anything. I'm sure many will feel the same when the credits roll

Very slow and boring. Stupid decisions from the father and a totally stupid and unsatisfied end. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

A character-oriented vengeance story from Spain.
This is a Spanish production (original title: '' Tu Hijo ''), directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas and starring one of the best contemporary European actors, Jose Coronado, whose performance as the protagonist, Jaime, is truly riveting. Jaime is a middle-aged surgeon, married with two kids, Markos (Pol Monen) and Sara (Asia Ortega). When Markos gets seriously injured after a nasty fight outside a nightclub, Jaime will have to face his worst nightmare, how own son is in a coma and decides to find the person responsible and revenge his boy.

This is the basic premise of the story, and it certainly is not one that we, as viewers, haven't already encountered numerous times in films of the genre. The difference is that ''Tu Hijo'' is, above all, a study of the protagonist's character, concentrating on his feelings and emotional reactions rather than relying on the strength of its script and plotting. Coronado combines intensity with subtlety and is compelling in his portrayal of a shattered man, determined to get revenge for his son's current predicament. The director chooses do many close shots to Coronado's face which reflect the wide range of Jaime's conflicted feelings, ranging from pure rage to the sense of helplessness and despair, while displaying the actors skills.

Of course, the above facts do not imply that ''Your Son'' is a boring film with a weak plot. On the contrary, I that it has a compelling plot which unfolds in a slow -though effective- tempo and leaves no loose ends. The story reaches its climax in the final ten minutes of the running time and the finale comes as a surprise to the viewer who definitely expects another decision made from the protagonist. Personally, I think it was a great, though-provoking ending which suited perfectly the film's mood and tone. ''Your Son'' is a movie that you will think about for days after watching as it raises valid questions regarding justice, vigilantism and the meaning of familial obligation.

Good film though a bit slow
peter079 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I randomly picked this on Netflix and the film did well building up suspense. The story is familiar: a man is driven to revenge and vigilantism after his beloved son is brutally beaten and the authorities are of little help. Yet I knew the plot here wouldn't be so simple. The surgeon father is played well but I felt too much time was devoted to just his expressions but that's just me. The climax occurs in the final 15 minutes after the father crosses a line and the ending is left a bit ambiguous, though it's pretty evident justice will eventually prevail. I think American audiences would not like how things turn out but this is a Spanish film that has a far-from-Hollywood ending.

Interminably slow and tedious with an ending that is no surprise at all considering the multiple truths about character that evolve.

Abre los ojos!
ulicknormanowen13 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A subject as old as the hills; not only the police are incompetent ,but they side with one of the culprits : but ,fortunately, violence is kept to the minimum ,and the first part is satisfying : one has enough time to aappreciate the camaraderie relationship between the son and the father ;both have everything to be happy :dad is a surgeon, devoted to his patients, sonny is a sportsman ,with bright prospects ;one regrets that ,along the movie, the role of the mother ( it's HER son too after all!!!and a mother suffers too!) should be so small ;it's all the more infuriating since she's played by the great Ana Wagener (you must see her in "contratempio" !); so the macho side -which in the second part becomes more obvious - was not lost on certain viewers .

On the other hand ,there are excellent scenes to be found in the first hour : the meeting between the surgeon and the owner of the nightclub holding flowers ; the latter shows false compassion and the former ,although his visitor is not responsible for the awful fate of his son ,oozing with rancor and holding back his anger ; the parcel he receives and his boy's last note .

Things deteriorate after the first hour: the screenplay becomes desultory , involving emotional blackmail , the crash on the bridge ; the unexpected twist is not implausible, and the ending not so happy :the last picture ,the son's face , is revealing :he'll probably be disfigured and crippled for life. Ain't it enough?

Script not well developed
fervly9 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting movie but with some pitfalls and mistakes... Why not forwarding the video? Where is the police on the movie? The relationship with the wife not well explained. The situation that causes the quarrel would have been raised much before in real life with so many people knowing the truth... The character of the son is a perfect one at the beginning and very bad at the the end... script trick Good interpretation from Jose Coronado

This movie lost me as soon as he found the video and didn't forward it to himself or upload it to social media. But no, he kept touching the screen so it wouldn't lock. Exit movie, not even bothered to watch after such stupidity.

Slow and mostly predictable revenge thriller
Wizard-84 March 2019
The advertising of this movie, promising to be a take on the old "Death Wish" formula but with a Spanish flavor, is what compelled me to give this movie a whirl when I found it on Netflix. But overall I was quite disappointed with the results. Not everything is bad about the movie, I admit. The movie is pretty well acted, and it does portray vigilantism in a much more realistic and believable way than what you usually find in Hollywood movies. But even though what we see is more believable, practically all of the plot turns are extremely predictable, often being blatantly telegraphed to the audience a long time before they actually arrive. The movie also seems to be missing a few key scenes and linking footage here and there, and the ending leaves some pretty obvious loose ends. And while the movie doesn't look seriously cheap, it's obvious throughout that the filmmakers had a very limited budget. But the main problem with the movie is that it is agonizingly slow. Certainly, a real fast-pace would have hurt the movie, but all the same I think the movie could have been told with a somewhat more brisk pace. This is not really an awful movie, but it's for the most part unsatisfying. If you want to see a European take on the "Death Wish" formula, hunt down a copy of the British thriller "Harry Brown" instead.

Disappointing Movie
vango_al4 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The premise was good, but eventually the movie suffers from dragged out scenes, huge plot holes and an ending so bad i regret my time spent on it.

I understand that its an artistic style to drag out scenes, but you can only show so many times a guy watching out of his car window for 2 minutes straight, or 2 minutes of walking, or 2 minutes of thinking. It got really annoying really fast. Eventually i had to fast forward because the plot wasnt moving at all.

Huge plot holes. After getting the smartphone of the kid he didnt think to share the video on whatsapp or social media, instead he just kept touching it for not to get it locked. Cmon, he is in his mid 50s, no 90 years old and doesnt know how technology works.

The police is useless. Even after presenting evidence, they dont look at it "without a judge order". Fine, but at least listen to the man and go get that order. You have all you need there. Open and shut case.

I didnt like any of the characters. They dont make logical moves and act like robots (the only exception is the daughter i guess). Everyone else is dumb as bricks. Yeah, go in a revenge crusade without knowing all the details, while your son is still fighting for his life. Then after you know what he has done, you too are without morals and do the wrong thing. Sigh.

The ending was just sad, no closure nothing. Weakest point. 3 stars only because the cinematography is good.

Taught thriller that resurrects the old maxim...blood begets blood
dan-bgb10 March 2019
An essay on revenge. I come from the days of 'Death Wish'-type revenge movies...and root for the person that was wronged, supporting their actions. This movie combines raw emotionalism, highlighting what one does in the name of 'love'...particularly (but not exclusively) the love of a father for a son. To those that said this was boring or slow, or faulting characters for acting contrary to how they would act in a similar situation, 1) This film will appeal to those that want to delve into a story, not just non-stop action and 2) the protagonist was easily in his 50s...what is 'normal' behavior for a Millennial, may be foreign to a Boomer.

Why should I watch a movie about horrible people
mariamakesmusic6 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Simply a son whom a father feels was unjustly beaten by deplorable people. Then a father who does deplorable things for revenge- twist -'the son wasn't an innocent victim after all - twist the father condones a deplorable crime committed by his own son by choosing to deny it ever happened. If you like to watch how justice is never served among alpha males who rape women then this film is for you.

So Slooooooooow!
clintstevens4 March 2019
Perhaps this is how they tell stories in Spanish films, but the movie moves so excruciatingly slow that by the end, all interest has evaporated. Scenes of walking, running, waiting, thinking seem to go on forever. Perhaps this would have been worthwhile if there had been a satisfying conclusion but no such luck.

An extra star because I DID watch the entire movie, but because it wasted 103 minutes of my life, it deserves no more.
