Drama and children’s programming remain the focus for a new look ABC in 2021 as the broadcaster aims for greater fluidity between its platforms, according to director of entertainment and specialist Michael Carrington.
Like many of its neighbours in the free-to-air space, the ABC has altered its model in the past 12 months to better navigate a post-pandemic landscape.
This has included the introduction of ABC TV Plus as a replacement for ABC Comedy, as well as the launch of the Fresh Start Fund, $5 million of development money that aims to assist the independent production through Covid.
There have also been consolidation measures, such as $5 million in cuts to the commissioning of independent production, a move likely to impact the factual slate in the short-term.
Speaking about the year ahead, Carrington tells If the success of shows such as political drama Total Control, as well as children’s programs Bluey and...

The Victorian government announced a $33.8 million screen industry package today, including an incentive fund to attract footloose production, additional funding for local projects, and the establishment of a new technical hub near Docklands Studios Melbourne.
A vast majority of the funding will be spent in this financial year, with Film Victoria CEO Caroline Pitcher telling If it is designed to be a ‘stop gap’ post-covid to stimulate the industry, ahead of the implementation of the five-year Victorian Government Screen Industry Strategy in 2021-22.
At $19.2 million, the Victorian Screen Incentive will be targeted at attracting interstate and international physical production over the next two years, and visual effects, animation, post-production and digital games within this financial year. It will be overseen by the Film Victoria Economic Development Committee.
The fund has already helped to attract Liam Neeson-starrer Blacklight, which started shooting in Melbourne last week. Directed by Ozark creator Mark Williams,...

A second season of ABC’s Superwog, the brainchild of brothers Theodore and Nathan Saidden, will begin shooting this week in Melbourne.
Produced by Superwog and Princess Pictures, the second instalment will dive further into Superwog’s volatile family as he and his dad chase their passions, test their friendships, fight relatives and butt heads with authorities.
The Saidden brothers have written and will star in all episodes, with Theodore to direct. They co-produce with Mike Cowap and Antje Kulpe. Executive producers are Emma Fitzsimons, Elia Eliades and Katherine Dale, with Todd Abbott and Andrew Gregory for the ABC.
Superwog‘s beginnings are viral YouTube skits. Google/Screen Australia then supported a TV pilot via their Skip Ahead initiative, which then led to the ABC ordering the first season.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Theo and Nathan,” Cowap said.
“Season one saw the talented brothers make the successful leap...

Michael Carrington.
The ABC intends to ramp up digital-first content as well as reaching new audiences, including those who rarely if ever watch broadcast television.
“We look for content that works across multiple platforms to appeal to a multitude of people, from traditional broadcast audiences to viewers who have never seen a TV schedule,” Michael Carrington, ABC director of entertainment and specialist, tells If.
“Great content is great content, no matter how people watch it. Programs like Total Control and Killing Eve have attracted younger audiences on iview in addition to strong results on linear. So we are not just talking about increasing the volume of digital-first content but how we can better curate content between our platforms.
“Saying that, we need to meet the growing expectation of audiences for high-quality content on demand. That will mean a greater focus on enhancing our content and technology for digital audiences, from...

Screen Australia backed four short-form comedies and one drama with close to $500,000 in its most recent online production funding round.
Four of the creative teams are to receive Screen Australia funding for the first time, including producers Karen Colston and Robbie Miles who will create the six-part parody Sarah’s Channel for ABC iview. Claudia O’Doherty (Trainwreck, Love) will star as a beauty vlogger Sarah who discovers she’s been reanimated after an apocalypse. Live performer and theatre playwright Nick Coyle will make the jump to screen to write and direct.
“I’m thrilled (and surprised) that my idea of a Beauty Vlogger uploading videos in a post-apocalyptic world has been green-lit, and excited to be collaborating with such a fantastic team to bring it to life,” said Coyle. “There is so much comedy to mine in the online influencer world,...
