In an interview for the DVD, director Ulli Lommel said that he was planning to make further sequels to The Boogeyman, stating Boogeyman 5-9 were allegedly already planned. As there are only three movies: The Boogey Man (1980), Boogeyman II (1983) and Return of the Boogeyman (1994), and no fourth movie, it is possible this redux version was originally supposed to be Boogeyman 4, as this version is more like a continuation of Boogeyman II, showing what happened to the character Mickey Lombard after the events of Part II, rather than a different cut of the film. However, none of this is known for certain, as Lommel has given various accounts over the decades since these films' release.
The original version, Boogeyman II (1983) consists of about 40% footage from the first movie which have been used mainly in the first half of the movie and the flashbacks. In this redux version, scenes from the original Boogeyman II are far less important. Mainly the murder scenes of this part of the story are left as flashbacks. Instead, the redux version consists of about 90% of scenes from the first movie, only shortly interrupted by the scenes of Mickey's interrogation.
The DVD contains a special feature of two clips, one from "Boogeyman 3" and one from "Boogeyman 5." The "Boogeyman 3" clip is indeed a clip from the third movie in the series, Return of the Boogeyman, however, there is no Boogeyman 4 or 5. The "Boogeyman 5" clip is footage from Ulli Lommel's 1987 film, I.F.O. - Identified Flying Object - with a tiny bit of Boogeyman footage spliced in.
Although Suzanna Love is credited for starring in Ulli Lommel's Boogeyman 2: Director's Cut (2003), Love doesn't actually appear in the film, her scenes are just stock footage taken from The Boogey Man (1980) and Boogeyman II (1983) used for the flashbacks.
