Love the creative comedy!
grahmmolloy5 April 2019
This show had me worried at first, but it is actually great. It has a lot of creative film mediums in it, (similar to the amazing world of gumball), which adds to the creativity. I'd say the best part of this show is the comedy it has. It is full of clever jokes, and things that make me laugh out loud. The only thing that isn't that great is parts of the stories. Some of the bad guys seem a little boring, and it is sometimes very predictable. But you have to keep in mind, this was made for young children, so a lot of things will be entertaining to them that might seem old to the elderly. I would definitely recommend this show to any fans of the books.

Good for it's Demographic
nacholasrs19 July 2018
I wasn't expecting anything good from this show, since it's a Dreamworks cartoon based off of a Dreamworks movie based off of a comic book I never bothered to read. I was pleasantly surprised by what I got.

The show contains a lot of good fast-paced humor that I can't seem to find much of in modern cartoons. I say "good" because most fast-paced humor in modern kids' animation is just "random" humor, but this show actually has reason behind it's gags. Unfortunately, it has a fair amount of bodily humor (expectable from a show called "Captain Underpants"), and while I can forgive it because of it's target audience, I can't in good conscience give the show any higher of a score than 7. Nevertheless, it contains a healthy dose of self-aware humor with it's visual gags, and while the show itself is formulaic, the jokes are not.

All things considered, "Captain Underpants" is an above average show that, while flawed, has better humor in it than other acclaimed "comedies" such as Adventure Time (simple bodily humor and random "irony"), Uncle Grandpa (complete pandemonium that passes itself as "irony"), Amazing World of Gumball (nothing put internet and pop culture references), and the like. I would recommend this show.

A lot better than the film
xanderblue-1217819 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's a lot better than the film but they still added that stupid goodness forsaken treehouse. But It's still a good show and it's a lot better than that abysmal movie.

Truly awful. It stinks.

The longest fart joke in human history. It also teaches kids that teachers are stupid and to be disrespected, that clever kids are nerds and that it's OK to be a slacker.

Thanks Netflix.

Fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart.

Dare I say, too much of a brilliant thing?
GiraffeDoor30 March 2023
I loved the books as a kid but even I think this is so high glucose that it's actually quite overwhelming. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing by itself but you really need to get your bearings before you dive into one of these adventures.

Considering there are like 12 books and over 50 of these episodes, they do get formulaic after a time and there are SO MANY verbose episode and chapter names that I needed to take a break from this show several times.

But I like the energy and the humor. Mr Krupp is much more of an idiot than he was before but that makes sense. Too often they design a villain in their comics and BY COINCIDENCDE that villain turns up in real life. The fast talking narrator makes things even more overwhelming.

They mix up the stories by adding some reoccurring elements each season which is admirable. They even change the setting for long periods.

None of the original stories survive but I can respect that.

The cast of characters has been expanded greatly and it gives a lot more for each individual episode to play around with; I especically like "mah HAAR".

My biggest negative about this show is Erica. Total Mary Sue. They wanted to throw in a black girl, which is cool. They wanted someone who can kind of be a foil to George and Harold which is very logical. But she just has to be SO PERFECT all the time, it's bland and annoying.

It took too long for a Captain underpants show to be made but I'm just glad I lived to see it.

I love this show!
mitsubishizero26 July 2019
As someone who grew up reading the books I have to say I really enjoyed this show. I love its sense of humor and style. I really like how in some episodes it blends various types of animation from 2D style to stopmotion and puppets. The show's about 2 young aspiring comic book artists named George Beard (Ramone Hamilton) and Harold Hutchins (Jay Gragnani) trying to make the most of their school year while trying to avoid their grumpy principal Mr. Krupp (Nat Fixon) and smart yet condescending rival Melvin Sneedly (Jorge Diaz). Unbeknownst to Mr. Krupp he's hypnotized to be Captain Underpants whenever George or Harold snap their fingers. Each episode is based on a comic they wrote. Usually what follows are some hilarious antics and hilarious jokes.

This's a great show and I highly recommend it to both fans of the book series and animation lovers.

Big laughs!

We are huge fans of the books and loved the film. But this series takes the boys and the Cap'n to ANOTHER LEVEL! The little boy in my head is so happy, as are the kids in our house. Enjoy, you will not regret it.

This Is One Of The Most Disappointing Netflix Series Adaptations
xstephen-9362716 January 2024
Captain Underpants is probably my favorite book series of all time, the humor, the characters, the stories, the...................... Basically what I'm saying is Dav Pilkey is a genius.

The books are entertaining and fun to read and wouldn't bore you easily unlike other books that bore me *cough* (The Hardy Boys).

Anyways the books are so goddamn good this review does not do justice for the books, in 2011 DreamWorks animation got the rights for Captain Underpants and made a movie about it in 2017.

I'll just say this, that movie is the best DreamWorks movie for many good reasons.

1. It is a good adaptation of the books 2. It has the same humor as the books 3. It is faithful to the source mater-

Basically what I'm saying is the movie is like the books and it's a very good movie in general.

So Netflix (for some reason) decided to make one of the worst cartoon shows amd adaptations of all time.

First of all, they have nothing and I mean NOTHING to do with the books, WHEN THEY LITERALLY MADE A TV SERIES BASED ON AMAZING, SPECTACULAR, FANTASTIC, AND EPIC NOVELS (by Dav Pilkey).

Second of all, Melvin............................................... Just Melvin

Third the series would've been better if it were ADAPTATIONS of the books, if you don't know what I mean, every episode will basically be an adaptation of the books.

The only good thing about the series is that at least it has one episode that kinda is an adaptation of the books the first episode from the first season.

Much better than it seems
jameslimori21 November 2018
Having read the novels when I was a kid, I can say that this show is much better than I expected. The humour is fresh and super meta, and the best part - it's actually pretty funny. This show is plain dumb fun, there needs to be a season 2!!

The Worst Kid's Show Ever
lbradford-9238818 December 2023
This show was manufactured to be as annoying as possible. I don't mind the books but the show is just repeated annoying noises. There is no humor, close to zero story... I recommend just pretending it doesn't exist, even if your kid is a Captain Underpants fan. It is actually physically painful to experience and makes me feel nauseous, that's how abrasive it is. And I grew up with the likes of Looney toons and Ren and Stimpy so I am not too easily annoyed. This is on another level. Anyone involved on this show should be banished from working in the industry ever again. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

bryanncool24 August 2018
I was so happy that they made a captain underpants movie when I was young I absolutely loved the books and wanted them to make a movie so bad! Then they did it! It was everything I imagined! Then Netflix made it into a tv show!! This brought my inner child out I was so happy! The tv show is just as good as the movie I love it. Thank you NETFLIX!!!!

True to the books

If you, or your child, has read the Dav Pilkey books, you will get this series. It is a great continuance and it's harmless silly fun for fans.

Cringe and offensive
aidanandrewhicks6 December 2021
This is so cringe (cringe means it's so unfunny you question you're existence), the protagonist are bullies who commit countless "pranks" (one involves giving a classmate a mental breakdown and one involved purposely making a teacher lose her job.) and vandalizing government property, definitely some really good antagonist. This show also implies heavily on the moral of "dropping out of school" because the show makes school seem like a never ending hell that bans creativity and imagination. And finally we get to have our ears bleed with the best form of comedy: toilet humor, lovely. The original books were based on toilet humor but somehow they did it right, in this show it wants to make me jump of the Eiffel Tower. Speaking of the Eiffel Tower this show has an entire episode dedicated to discriminating French people. Please don't watch this show, for your own sanity don't watch this show.

Much better than the Movie
lekaprdeka9 February 2020
I think that a show is a much better way to adapt the books since they were relatively short and their over all structure translates better into a show then a movie. And also the 2d animation is a much better way to adapt the books as well, the show is litlerly the Books but animated and I think that was a good idea.

Surprisingly good
FrogLord6 October 2020
As a kid, I read all the captain underpants books, and was fond of them. After watching the captain underpants movie that came out not too long ago, I gotta be honest, I was quite disappointed. It didn't really feel like captain underpants. This show however, is surprisingly really good! I started watching it skeptically with my younger siblings, but actually found myself really enjoying it! It stays true the books, and if you were a fan of them, I would give it a watch! It might surprise you!

So Good!
owenhouseholder11 November 2021
I've always loved the books and the movie was great but this Netflix show is really amazing! Plus they made their own villains for this show. Also only people who watch this show will get my headline.

The book novel series was my childhood, but a TV show really wasn't needed
cchuchu1 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Captain Underpants as an epic novel book series was my childhood! It was my favourite book series along with Diary of a Wimpy Kid, horrid Henry and many more.

On 2017, the movie for the book series came out. It wasn't bad, nor perfect, just decent.

Then on 2018, I heard the book series will also be getting an animated series. I was intrigued, so I gave it a watch on Netflix. And I got to say, it was a bit disappointing.

It had the two main characters from the books, George and Harold, along with other recurring characters from the books like Mr Krupp (aka captain underpants), Mr Meaner, Melvin and a few more, which leaves the rest of the characters to be new for this animated series.

This series to me just doesn't capture the feel of the novels by Dave Pilkey, and feels more like DreamWorks running out of ideas for TV shows. The new added characters to the series can get a bit annoying from time to time but can still be likeable. The fart jokes were completely unfunny and felt just pathetic. The narrator in this series was a tad bit irritating and wasn't really needed, and the comic reading narrator was 3x irritating with his obnoxious, screeching, kid-like voice for 1 minute straight which is quite cringy.

Overall, this series isn't terribly bad, nor great. Just below average, and a show that nobody really asked for.

Bright

I really think I hate this show
simonpick-7452220 January 2024
I think I hate this show. It thinks it's funny and it's so damn smug. And it's really toilet-obsessed.

The source material is full of potty humour of course, before Dav Pilkey's combination of childish jokes and concerns with outsiderism and creativity received its proper maturity with Dogman and the Cat Kid Comic Club; but somehow in the books this gets by, perhaps because they're more focussed on the main adventure narrative. In the Netflix show the obvious jokes are relentless and wearisome. And for a show taken from source material which is so concerned with retribution against bullies and the nature of the outsider, it just seems wrong that here the George and Harold characters so frequently exclude, isolate and vicitimise in their comics Melvin Sneedly, who if he had his just deserts as presented would be recognised as a boy genius. George and Harold are the bullies in this show.

The movie managed the same material with a bit more depth, showing the underlying sadness of the Krupp character. In this television show, he's some kind of sub-normal whose permanent mental and character inadequacies are nothing but an object of mockery. As presented, the character should be in a home for assisted living, not principal of a school.

What can I say, my kids giggle at it. It's a real toss-up which I less like to watch with my kids, this or the absolutely worthless Paw Patrol.

starts funny, slowly turns into baby family guy
ashleycarreira-1234330 October 2023
I love this franchise, i think its funny and shows pretty good ADHD representation, as someone who grew up with ADHD (undiagnosed until 5th grade) this show is rlly accurate to how i felt about school. In the first season, anyway. It starts out cute and charming with funny gags and jokes with maybe a cutaway or two, but it doesnt rely on cutaways for humor. Until season 3, which is literally just cutaways and sometimes a fart. It was JUST like the fall of Family Guy, starting with good humor, and devolving with stupid cutaways. I feel robbed, it couldve been so good bro if they had just continued the same humor they had in the first season it wouldve been so good. Idk if they swapped writers or something, but the other seasons just feel like what 50 year old men with no kids think kids would like, trying to keep the attention span with bad cutaways and 4th wall breaks every 2 seconds. Anyway, im like 16 years old idk why i care so much abt this or why i even watched it, but if they ever decide to bring this show back, BRING BACK THE OLD WRITERS.
