The lack of Latine representation in film today is disappointing when you consider Latines accounted for 29 percent of moviegoers in the States in 2020. And here's a fun fact you probably didn't know: Latines also represent 26 percent of horror movie audiences, compared with 20 percent for other genres, according to a recent survey. Still, there's a marked lack of Latine actors starring in horror films. But Melissa Barrera's career has been challenging that. The horror and suspense queen has starred in several films within the genre in just the past few years, including "Scream," "Scream IV," "Bed Rest," and "Your Monster."
Her latest role is as Joey in "Abigail," a gory vampire film released April 19 about a group of criminals assigned to kidnap the 12-year-old daughter of a crooked millionaire. Like a lot of Barrera's roles, Joey isn't your typical in-your-face Latina character. She's a war veteran with a dream to...

According to new McKinsey & Company research, there are over 62 million Latinos living in the United States who not only account for more than $3 trillion of Gdp but are also avid consumers of film and TV. US Latinos account for 24 percent of box office ticket sales and 24 percent of streaming subscribers. Yet somehow, there still aren't enough Latines behind and in front of the camera even though our viewership doubles when we see ourselves represented on or off screen.
Today, we still don't have enough TV programming that accurately represents us - and the few shows that have been created for us and by us, like "Vida," "One Day at a Time," "Promised Land," and "Gentefied," were eventually all canceled despite their popularity. Among these many cancellations was Dominican American creator Claudia Forestieri's beloved "Gordita Chronicles," which was released in June 2022 on HBO Max and was canceled after just one season.

Melissa Barrera has been fired from Scream 7 after the actress shared her views on the Israel-Hamas war.
“Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp,” she wrote in an Instagram story. “Cornering everyone together, with nowhere to go, no electricity no water… People have learned nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. This Is Genocide & Ethnic Cleansing.”
A spokesperson from Spyglass, the company behind the Scream franchise, released a statement following the news of Barrera’s removal from the film.

Starz has given an eight-episode order to “The Hunting Wives,” a thriller based on the book of the same name by May Cobb. The author will serve as an executive producer for the series.
“The Hunting Wives” focuses on the story of Sophie O’Neil, a woman whose family moves from the East Coast to a highly Republican part of Texas. Once there, she becomes enmeshed in the life of socialite Margo Banks and obsession, seduction and murder become her new norm.
The series is executive produced by Rebecca Cutter (“Hightown”), who will write the series and serve as its showrunner. Erwin Stoff also executive produces for 3 Arts Entertainment.
“’The Hunting Wives’ is a juicy, suspenseful and sultry thrill-ride,” Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz, said in a press release. “We’re excited to continue to work with Rebecca and Erwin on this propulsive series that perfectly complements Starz’s slate of edgy,...

The extremely successful John Wick universe is expanding! Brand-new TV prequel series The Continental lands on Peacock in the US and Prime Video in the UK this September with a mission to take the world of John Wick beyond the ultra-violent adventures of Mr. Wick himself, but they’ll still need guns – lots of guns.
Unfortunately, John Wick star Keanu Reeves does not appear in The Continental, but there are lots of new and familiar characters checking into both the notorious New York hotel and the intricate lore of the franchise in this big budget streaming TV series. If you need to know more about those characters and the actors behind the roles, we’re here to help.

Keanu Reeves’ master assassin may have been left for almost dead at the end of the fourth John Wick film, but things are alive and kicking in the franchise, at least retroactively.
Or, to quote Mel Gibson, who plays the manager of the “precious” hotel for killers at the center of the ’70s and New York-set The Continental: From the World of John Wick: “Son of a bitch, where’s my f*ckin’ shotgun?”
With more than its fair share of Me Decade revolutionaries, rats (literal and figurative) and “fun fumes,” as Gibson’s feral Cormac exclaims, The Continental primarily is a throwback to the heroic bloodshed genre perfected by Ringo Lam and John Woo in the 1980s. With more than a nod or two to 2011’s The Raid, the limited series partially directed by Albert Hughes kicks bellbottomed butt in true John Wick style over its September 22-debuting three-part run on Peacock.

Lucha culture may seem like an unlikely path for queer liberation, but that's only if you don't know the real-life story of Saúl Armendáriz, the "exótico" who turned wrestling in Mexico and north of the border upside down. He's the subject of the new Amazon film "Cassandro," played by Gael García Bernal; the movie also features Bad Bunny and Roberta Colindrez. It follows Armendáriz as he finds self-acceptance and uses his example to nudge Mexico into becoming more accepting.
The film's star power echoes its subject, showing how celebrities can normalize LGBTQ+ identities in the ring and out. Bad Bunny is perhaps the most influential Latino of his generation. García Bernal has been making waves as a well-respected actor for decades. And Colindrez, from "Vida" and "A League of Her Own," while lesser known, is beloved in the queer community. Not only does the film feature an impressive cast,...

In a sign of Hollywood’s escalating internal tensions, a prominent Directors Guild of America member openly advocated against the election of 10 writer-directors to the guild’s board earlier this month on the grounds that they were “primarily writers” and hailed from “fringe groups.”
In a leaked email that has been shared widely in the creative community, Linda Montanti, chair of the guild’s Western Ad/Upm Council, urged a bloc of DGA voters to not support the board candidacies of a number of multihyphenates who are members of both the DGA and WGA — some of whom have been outspoken about strike issues. The list includes writer-producer Boots Riley, Oscar-winning “Coda” writer-director Sian Heder, actor-filmmaker Justine Bateman, actor-writer Paul Scheer and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. The unorthodox move prompted DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter to contact the members affected to assure them that Montanti’s move was not condoned by top DGA leaders.

This is Day 109 of the WGA strike and Day 36 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA teamed up for its first bicoastal picket in Los Angeles and New York on Friday, and Latino Hollywood showed up in droves.
At Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, more than 2,000 actors, writers and supporters hit the sidewalks as temperatures hit the high-80s. Salsa and Bachata music blasted through the speakers near Gates 2 and 3 as patient strike captains including Vida star Chelsea Rendon, kept everyone moving safely. One captain was overheard saying, “You have to keep moving, but you don’t have to stop dancing!” And so they did.

Latin American companies have descended on the 60th LA Screenings, mindful of the ever-shifting panorama in content distribution and production.
The ongoing writers’ strike is viewed by some as a boon for international content. Take what Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said at the company’s first quarter financials report presentation when the writers’ strike was looming: “If there’s a strike — and we want to work really hard to make sure we can find a fair and equitable deal so we can avoid one — but if there is one, we have a large base of upcoming shows and films from around the world.”
“The global market is finally realizing that Latin America, with almost 700 million inhabitants that speak the same language, is a territory that has a huge penetration in terms of Ott and – still – pay tv subscribers,” says Mexico City-based Manuel Marti, Fremantle’s head of scripted development, Latin America.

The Latin pop charts have always given us a somewhat skewed portrait of Juanes. Hits like the compulsively hummable 2004 song “La Camisa Negra” established the Colombian singer/songwriter as a multi-platinum-selling global icon. In doing so, many listeners and radio programmers focused on the bubbly, slick, frivolous aspect of his craft. But there’s another, more interesting side to Juanes. There’s darkness and depth – the layered musical language of a studious guitar player who may surprise you in concert with a legit reggae riff, or channel the visceral grooves...

The mechanics and politics of the filmed sex scene are put under a microscope in Kristy Guevara-Flanagan’s documentary Body Parts. A useful primer for thinking about the ways Hollywood has encoded heteronormative ideas about coitus and acted as a type of collective sex ed, Body Parts is ultimately a little too expansive. Bouncing between the Hays Code, Hattie McDaniel and the “Mamie” stereotype, #MeToo, the Harvey Weinstein and James Franco scandals, intimacy coordinators, nudity riders, and about ten other subtopics, Guevara-Flanagan’s thesis about incremental changes to the industry is ultimately diffused. While compelling in its individual, discrete sections, it fails to find a compelling throughline that would tie everything together.
Featuring a roster of talking heads, Body Parts mainly prioritizes TV creators including Joey Solloway (Transparent), David Simon (The Deuce), and Tanya Saracho (Vida), as well as actors DeWanda Wise, Rosanna Arquette, Jane Fonda, Rose McGowan, and Alexandra Billings.

Maybe it was the excitement of post-lockdown celebrations or the simple triumph of getting through the worst of the pandemic, but the energy felt different at the 22nd annual Latin Grammys back in November of 2021. Thousands of people, dressed in shimmering gowns and slick suits, had gathered at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for the awards ceremony. At the end of the night, when it was time for the anticipated Song of the Year category, the air turned electric as people waited to hear who might take home...

Content warning: The following story contains text descriptions of pregnancy loss.
We live in a world that doesn't believe women when we say we're experiencing pain - whether it's chronic physical pain or psychological distress. The patriarchal powers that be have always dismissed us, so much so that it has seeped into our healthcare systems. The issue goes way beyond not being believed: the pain gap has deadly consequences, and America is contending with a maternal healthcare crisis worse than in any other developed country.
And while our culture is finally acknowledging this reality, the stigma around these issues is still very real - perhaps most glaringly when it comes to pregnancy loss. Our culture still does not openly discuss the grief and severe psychological impacts miscarriages and stillbirths can have on women. In writer and director Lori Evans Taylor's new supernatural thriller, "Bed Rest," released on Tubi on Dec.
