The magical girl genre is one that’s near and dear to my heart. As a kid, anime like Sailor Moon immediately caught my attention with their all-girl team-ups, openness about wanting to rest after the fight and severe lack of “girls are useless” narratives. It’s no wonder so many creators take inspiration from a genre that champions love, friendship, self-care and badassery. Such is the case for Pearl Low. “Creating community through storytelling is at the heart of why I tell the types of stories that I do.” - Pearl Low, creator of Wheels & Roses Low has worked in animation for over eight years, having worked on projects such as Hair Love (Sony Pictures Animation), Craig of the Creek (Cartoon Network), #1 Happy Family USA (A24) and more. Low has since created Orange Blossom Studios , an independent studio that, according to Low, “strives to center diverse magical and cultural stories.

When Guillermo del Toro accepted the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature ("Pinocchio") in 2022, he proclaimed during his speech, "Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre. Animation is ready to be taken to the next step, we are all ready for it." Well, 2023 certainly heard him, because this year we were gifted an embarrassment of riches — all using the animated medium to push the limits of storytelling and visual artistry. At the same time, animated projects are constantly under attack by powerful millionaires in positions of power who can't or refuse to see the value in animation and instead still operate under the false assumption that it's nothing more than "kid's stuff." And even still, there was plenty of incredible animation this year specifically targeting young audiences, like the "Craig of the Creek" prequel film "Craig Before the Creek," Apple TV+'s "The Snoopy Show," and of course, the undisputed children's champion,...

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

When The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder debuted last year on Disney+, it called back to the bygone era of Black TV sitcoms in which its 2001 Disney Channel predecessor shined. One where Black families, culture and people were not only celebrated on the small screens in living rooms across the country, but the central focal point of multiple simultaneously airing (though mostly live-action) series.
Its return on Feb. 3, however, pointed to a stunning reality. While the original series aired in the 2000s alongside a handful of animated kids shows also featuring Black leads, including Filmore!, Static Shock, Tutenstein and Little Bill, there has since been only a handful of animated shows aimed at non-adult audiences that explicitly center Black leads and, more specifically, their families.

Hollywood keeps pushing the envelope with Black representation, but breaking boundaries is ongoing work. Many of the most successful pieces of media centering Black stories are based in violence, grief, and trauma, either historical or imagined. As essential as these stories are to understanding centuries of oppression, part of unlearning racial bias is recognizing that everyone experiences joy, sorrow, love, disappointment, and everything in between — that we relate more than imaginable to people we perceive as different.
As crucial as it is to learn the world’s (and the United States especially) history of horrific discrimination, it’s also important for audiences to witness stories of Black triumph, survival, and just plain silliness. It’s also critical for the creative voices behind these works, because larger audiences for a movie or series show studios and distributors that there’s a demand for Black stories and talent. It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.

Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

February can be a weird month. It’s too late to wish anyone “Happy New Year,” late enough to abandon resolutions, and too early to leave the house if you want to avoid getting caught in nasty weather (even in Los Angeles).

2022 has been a devastating year for the world of animation. The Oscars kicked things off by relegating animated feature films to nothing more than children's fodder, Netflix is slowly disintegrating its entire animation department, an animated voice-over legend left this mortal plane far too soon, some of the best animated films of the year were unceremoniously dropped on streaming instead of being given the opportunity to shine in theaters, and HBO Max has absolutely obliterated its animation catalog, recreating the very problem that Cartoon Network was created to solve. Animators are continuing to fight for fair wages and better work environments while the industry as a whole continues to treat the medium with the same modicum of respect given to a wet newspaper.

Since a certain show about houses and dragons just wrapped, HBO Max has a big scheduling hole fill next month. How will they go about it? Let’s find out with the streamer’s list of new releases for November 2022!
Obviously, there is no replacing House of the Dragon‘s cultural impact so HBO is looking for some singles in November, rather than the homerun. Things get started on in promising fashion on Nov. 3. That date sees the premiere of Titans season 4 and the interesting true crime documentary Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty. The former will continue the adventures of DC’s heralded Titans team (and introduce some new heavy hitters) while the latter will try to keep pace with Netflix’s prolific true crime output.

There were plenty of justifiable skeptics when it was announced the "Rocky" franchise was going to continue with "Creed," but heading into its third film, the initial naysayers have all been humbled. The story of Adonis "Donnie" Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the so-called illegitimate son of the late and former world champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), is as deeply complicated and moving as the original series starring Sylvester Stallone, but thrives beyond sports movie tropes and motivational montages. The "Creed" series performs a powerful dance, one that intertwines the beloved legacy of a film series with a wholly unique story, as well as one that weaves the violence of sport and street survival as equally important. As with any good "Rocky" film, the "Creed" series also introduced a powerful successor to Adrian Balboa (Talia Shire), with the talented musician Bianca Taylor (Tessa Thompson) becoming someone worth fighting for.

Warner Bros. Discovery Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics chief marketing officer Tricia Melton is departing the company, along with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim senior VP of marketing and partnerships Jill King. Their exits rep the latest high-profile departures at the conglom as it continues to cut costs and downsize following the April acquisition of Warner Bros. by Discovery.
Melton’s and King’s exits come just days after Warner Bros. TV Group’s animation division was hit hard by cuts — including the merger of development and main production teams for Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. Both shingles remain, but with a smaller, merged headcount.
Tuesday’s Warner Bros. TV Group cuts impacted 82 staffers; in August, Wbd eliminated 70 jobs at HBO/HBO Max, and in September, 100 employees were let go as part of the downsizing of the company’s ad sales departments. The company is in the...

Brittany Cartwright’s husband Jax Taylor was criticized after she referred to him as her second child. Pic credit: Bravo
Vanderpump Rules alum Jax Taylor found himself the butt of the joke after his wife Brittany Cartwright referred to him as her second child.
The joke came as Brittany made her way to New York for New York Fashion Week. And given her recent weight loss transformation, it’s no surprise Brittany is rocking her way to Fashion Week.
After joining the Jenny Craig weight loss program, Brittany has consistently and happily shown off her progress and growing confidence.
As recently reported by Monsters and Critics, Brittany revealed she’s now lost over 40 pounds since welcoming her son Cruz in April 2021 and joining the weight loss giant.
However, as exciting as her most recent adventure is bound to be, when she posted a picture from her day of travel from California to New York,...

Brittany Cartwright shares her excitement over her recent commercial appearance. Pic credit: Bravo
Vanderpump Rules alum Brittany Cartwright is making more moves in the weight loss community and recently shared a look at her most recent commercial appearance.
As previously reported by Monsters and Critics, Brittany became a spokesperson for weight loss giant Jenny Craig after healing from the birth of her son, Cruz, in April 2021.
Throughout her pregnancy, Brittany was trolled heavily online for gaining more weight than her co-stars and friends. Brittany was one of four Pump Rules cast members to fall pregnant within mere months of one another.
Stassi Schroeder welcomed her daughter in January, followed by the birth of Lala’s daughter in March, and finally, Brittany and Scheana Shay both welcomed their babies in April.
Unlike her co-stars, including Lala Kent, Brittany experienced more weight gain which left her feeling vulnerable. While she did her best to maintain her confidence,...

Justice League and Dceu director Zack Snyder will appear as himself in an upcoming episode of Cartoon Network’s popular series Teen Titans Go!. The news was revealed Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con during Cartoon Network’s presentation.
Snyder will appear in the series’ 365th episode titled, “365!” premiering this fall. Rap trio De La Soul also returns for another guest appearance during the series’ upcoming eighth season. The band previously appeared as themselves in a season six episode titled, “Don’t Press Play,” that parodied their real-life music rights battle.
Teen Titans Go!‘s next chapter finds the teen heroes looking to make a big deal out of their 365th episode so they head to the Warner Bros. Studio lot to find a director. Sounds like a perfect spot for Snyder.
Additionally, it was announced that Grammy-winning hip hop artist Missy Elliott will guest star on the network’s Craig of the Creek.

With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.
The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.
HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

House of the Dragon, The Sandman and Harley Quinn will be showcased in a big way as Warner Bros. Discovery, still fresh from its merger, hits its first ever San Diego Comic-Con next month.
Yet the company, headed by CEO David Zaslav, is making big changes to its approach to Comic-Con as its various divisions make their first appearances at the annual pop culture celebration in three years, due to the pandemic. For the first time, Warners, including DC, will have no presence on the convention floor, a move that breaks with decades of precedent. Season two of Euphoria may be over, but it looks like Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike's romance is just getting started. The 23-year-old actress proved they're still going strong by uploading a photo of the 26-year-old actor to Instagram on Tuesday, March 8. The snapshot showed Fike dining at a restaurant and holding up plates of a few sweet treats, with Schafer adding a bee emoji to the buzz-worthy pic. The co-stars sparked romance rumors at the beginning of the year, and Schafer and Fike—who play Jules and Elliot respectively on Euphoria—fueled dating speculation after they were photographed holding hands while exiting West Hollywood hot spots The Nice Guy and Craig's in January. For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

Wake up, Neo.
It’s December 2021 and to celebrate HBO Max is bringing back a classic sci-fi franchise for one last ride. The X-Men are back — just not in live action.
Marvel Studios announced on Friday that the company is expanding its slate of animated series for Disney Plus with three new shows: “X-Men ’97,” “Spider-Man: Freshman Year,” and “Marvel Zombies.”
After Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, and the “X-Men” movie franchise was on its last legs with the poorly received “Dark Phoenix” and “The New Mutants,” many observers expected Marvel Studios to reboot the X-Men and reintegrate the characters back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Instead, for its first swing at the team of powerful mutant superheroes, the company is reaching back to its own origin story: “X-Men ’97” will be a continuation of the beloved 1990s “X-Men” animated series that ran for five seasons on the Fox network from 1992 through 1997. The show — which debuted in primetime before moving to Saturday mornings — was such a sensation that it’s widely credited for...
