The Pentagram of Boredom and Nothingness
bastian-kreuzer9 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is fine for about 15 minutes until the protagonists get caught inside the titular pentagram and you realize there won't be much more to the movie than that.

There's not much mystery about the evil entity as we see it a few minutes later. There's just some shaking and a badly designed CGI demon Asmodeus appears and drags the English guy to hell. Lucky for him. You're still stuck with an hour of the movie left to go and four people left alive. I wish the whole thing had just ended right then and there.

According to the synopsis these people are teenagers. Yeah, right. Well, at least they behave like they're 12 although they look like they're on the wrong side of 30.

Candles play a big part in the movie. The gut wrenching sequence of fetch the candle was so tense it had me on the edge of my seat. I thought they were dead for sure when they lost that last candle. But, hey, the junkie girl saved the day with her tiny tealight. Well done, girl. Who knew that small tealight was gonna burn as long as the foot tall and three inches wide massive candles.

I kinda thought that the bad guy was making the most sense the whole time. At least he was trying to resolve the situation. He should have just shot them all and left. But what the hell do I know. He was clearly the bad guy here.

What do you do when you get trapped inside a cursed pentagram? You go to sleep. What else would you do? Luckily no one had to use the toilet for the entire night.

On the whole this movie has much too little to offer. It looks cheap. It is shot in almost exclusively one location and that is just an ordinary room. The characters are weak and shallow. I found myself not really caring about what happens to them. The dialogue is monotonous and boring. Some of this is on the script, some on the wooden acting. There's almost zero tension. The horror element is not present. The CGI demon is not scary and is only a distant threat.

It probably seemed like an interesting idea for a low budget movie. Unfortunately that is all that remains. An interesting idea. The movie turned out to be an uninteresting dull affair. I would avoid this if I were you.

Warning: Spoilers
For those saying this at least has an original idea, it doesn't. It's a very poor imitation of The Devil Rides Out.

Most of the acting is decent enough, especially the addict. I don't even mind the fixed location. A well-written version of this could make a great play. Unfortunately the tension within the group is only loosely touched upon.

The tension is non-existent. Trying to get something out of reach? Clothing is the obvious (and not 'genius') option. One full candle short? Cut one or two existing candles in half and light the wick.

The demon is meh, but made worse by just repeating the same footage whenever it appears.

As for the ending? The mark was removed from her arm after her brother read the ritual. Why not display some of these magical powers this demon apparently promised? It would have been something at least.

Don't even bother...

Warning: Spoilers
Granted, the title of the movie and the fact that it is a horror movie was more than sufficient to make me sit down and watch the 2019 movie "Pentagram" from writer and director Steve Lawson.

When it was blatantly proclaimed that the movie was based on real events, that is where I first started to doubt this movie. And I managed to endure 31 minutes of "Pentagram" before I called it quits.

Why? Solely because the storyline bored me senseless. It was an abysmal and downright stupid storyline, and it didn't help much with having to suffer through a movie of four people trapped within the confines of a pentagram, unless they wanted to be mauled by a shroud of bad CGI.

This movie was just doomed from the very beginning. The storyline was so weak and pointless that it utterly failed to captivate me. And it didn't really help much that the movie was bearing a sense of overwhelming low-budget sensation.

As for the acting, well, let's just say that people were struggling with the script, plot and storyline, and they were given so very little to work with.

I am rating "Pentagram" a mere two out of ten stars, and I can honestly say that this is not a movie that I will be returning to finish watching. It was just downright ridiculous and boring. If you enjoy horror movies, there is an abundance of far more interesting choices readily available out there.

i wish i knew why...

Warning: Spoilers
This is a film about four american teenagers driving across the country to get their friend into rehab in california. somehow the main cast, director, and writers are all 30+ year old british people, and everything was filmed in leicester. the actors accents wavered so badly, it made the dialogue hilarious and the story irrelevant. in the first ten minutes of the movie, an actors accent fully changes from british to kind of american. why did they try to set this as an american story? do weird demon stories not exist in the uk? is the american horror audience more forgiving of trash movies(this might actually be true)? i have no idea. this movie is only worth a look if youve got 80 minutes to kill, and youre looking for a cheap laugh. or just watch 15 minutes, have a larff, and bin it, mate

If you are a fan of amateur horror movies (no pun intended), you might find more to like here than most did. The idea and placing everyone in one location is quite nicely done. You have to suspend your disbelief a lot though ... acting wise this is as flawed as is the CGI that you are being served.

The story is ok, again not that you will think about it much. And there is a decent little twist at the end. Even though it almost loses any effect by the way it is handled by the actors ... not really good, but I've seen worse.

This film should be deleted.
marcjbeard3 September 2021
This film fails on the directing, cinematography, editing, script, story, lighting, fx and acting. It's the most inane film I've ever unfortunately watched.

This film is obviously a first for all depts mentioned above.

Some films are not worthy of the name.. this film should be deleted from all archives, so that another film can be made and hopefully live up to the name "Pentagram".

Lol.

My Cousin's neighbor knew the guy
nogodnomasters14 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Four young adults are headed to California to get Holly (Chloe Farnworth) treatment for Heroin. They pay their way there by robbing restaurants on the side roads, the ones that Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta don't patron. On the getaway, the waitress shoots a hole in the radiator (from behind?) as our foursome get stuck on the road near an old house. Once inside the house, circumstances get them cursed and stuck inside a pentagram with white candles and not the traditional black candles. (Chalk and candles were the consumable props in this low budget film.) In order to get out of the circle, they will need to recite a ritual followed by a simple blood sacrifice to Asmodeus, a 1950's special effect demon.

Alexis Rodney provided us the obligatory secondary antagonist as they figure out whom to kill. This is a simple basic story which mostly takes place in one room without flashbacks to break things up.

Guide: F-word. No sex. No nudity.

Okay low budget horror
Tweekums16 December 2023
As this film opens a group of four people are sitting in a diner somewhere in rural America. They are on their way across the country to Los Angeles, the trip is funded by robbing establishments such as the one they are in. Having stuck up the place they flee but the waitress puts a bullet in their car's radiator so they don't get far. Broken down they walk to a lonely nearby house. Inside one goes upstairs and finds a man in a pentagram, which is drawn on the floor. Once she enters the pentagram a strange marking appears on her arm. He tells her that the only way out is a human sacrifice who must be killed within the symbol. If anybody steps outside or the candles at any of the five points go out a demon will take them. The other three are soon on the scene and it becomes clear the man was telling the truth. Will they figure a way to get out or will they die in the room? Inevitably tensions fray as the candles burn lower and lower.

This is very much a low budget film; most of it takes place in a small circle in a small unfurnished room. There aren't many special effects and what there are aren't exactly great. The plot is fun, if you can get past the coincidence of our four leads going to that house while somebody is in the middle of a demonic ritual. That said, despite the film's flaws I found it fairly tense. The acting might not be the greatest but it was good enough for this sort of film; I've certainly seen much worse. The resolution is reasonably predictable but none the worse for that. Overall I don't think this is half as bad as its IMDb rating suggests. I'd recommend it to fans of low budget horror; if you don't enjoy it you'll only have wasted eighty minutes.

Overlong
Pairic4 September 2021
Pentagram: Four young tearaways rob a cafe but the hillbilly waitress puts a bullet through their car's radiator. They find a derelict house in the woods but there's a guy there, trapped in a Pentagram. Soon they are the ones trapped within it. Some interesting aspects of a Ritual and the gang struggle to escape but have their own differences. This might have worked better as a Twilight Zone episode or a section of an anthology film. It's too drawn out and the effects are a bit cheesy but the acting is not bad. Just about worth watching. Directed/Co-written by Steve Lawson. On Netflix. 5/10.

Big momentum killer.
wxdcsvykc21 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I watch a lot of low-budget films, I love to watch ones with low ratings. Like a connoisseur of garbage. This movie didn't really disappoint. I watched it expecting average and got almost what I expected. The story starts off with the main characters that are all super forgettable (I just finished the movie and can't remember their names), robbing a diner, and of course just somehow running into a random house where there is a guy doing rituals? Why? Because no one likes actual storytelling, convenience is better. Once the story starts picking up and the characters actually manage to build some sort of plot, the next scene is just pointless backstory, and then the end of the movie was boring. Oh yeah, the cgi of the "devil" is hilarious.

Tl;dr: boring and lazy cast kills off any momentum this movie had a chance at gripping at.

The worst horror movie I have ever seen
rhiscose6 September 2021
Well it's currently on netflix and i've watched everything else so I went for this, it was recommended to me.

To begin with you could tell it was low budget movie but I have watched plenty of horrors with no budget so I do not hold that against it.

The script is awful, the actual plot required better writing to be good, but there was nothing, apart from some plot holes but who cares when it's so bad.

There's nothing scary about this, no atmosphere, no tension, no creepiness, nothing.

I guess you could call it a horror due to having a pentagram on the floor, and reusing the exact same animation of a demon twice, but that's an insult to the horror genre.

Honestly, I love horror movies and even some bad ones, but this is so below being bad, it has no redeeming features, not one.

Not even funny-stupid just stupid

Warning: Spoilers
It's on netflix unfortunately and when something is on netflix i rarely read reviews before, I'm too comfortable. But jeez I wish I did because there is nothing good to say about the movie.

Funnily enough I jumped from other two lame horror movies before settling with watching this one because the concept seemed interesting. But don't be fooled. It's executed so poorly that it's simply not worth it.

Lots of mistakes too, like the lighter that one time is "out" but later works, the tea candle that somehow lasts way longer than the thick candles did, the fact that it took like 2 min for the demon thingy to come take the person out of the pentagram but they could not just quickly run out to get the candles and then hurry back in the circle, the demon wasn't apparently interested in taking the pink highlights girl, etc. And the dialogue.... I had to fast forward through the last dialogue between siblings because it was boring and you didn't care about the characters the whole movie anyway. From the beginning I found the group to be extremely annoying and disliked them all.

Solid 1. Abrupt and predictable ending. Long pointless intro. You feel like nothing really happened in the movie, barely any tension, decision making, twists, suspenseful moments or existential crisis moments. Nothing. Nothing deep nothing exciting nothing funny nothing interesting nothing that would make you feel something.

Looked like some film school end of semester project made by someone who just wanted to get it over with and go home for Christmas.

Netflix, discard this movie, it's trash.

Worse than my low expectations.
annemariefix13 September 2021
The most entertaining thing about this movie is watching 30-something British people pretending to be American teenagers. Otherwise it's just 4 unengaging idiots messing aimlessly about. What if the sactifice scene from "the convent" was played straight and stretched out into an entire movie? The demon effects are lame, the plotholes are enormous, and none of these smartphone owning "teenagers" ever think of googling anything. A giant waste of time and dignity.

For the concept
syllaauguste17 September 2021
Ok, the movie is not very good but its concept is : in a strange house, four loosers have to stay in a pentagram drawn with chalk or a demon slaughter them. Woaw ! What are they going to do, for Christ sake ? Use their clothes for taking candles, of course ! Thanks Netflix.

A terrible horror movie
janellejordan17 November 2021
I read some of the reviews for this movie before watching and saw that the ratings were low and nobody had anything good to say about the movie but thought to myself surely it can't be that bad, but it really was and I have watched some bad horror movies but this took the cake, it wasn't even bad in a good way like some horrors are it was just bland and boring and a waste of time. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone.

Funny
annawomack-5370117 January 2023
Its attempts at horror are hilarious. It's really funny ngl kinda wish I could watch it for the first time again. As long as you go in expecting nothing you will have the time of your life. I heavily suggest watching with a friend or someone else, if you do watch it alone it'll probably get boring. One of the main characters is a cracked out Billie Eilish dupe and the others are just annoying. The southern diner waitress is really hot but after re-watching the movie I really got to hear how bad her accent was. The monster is like an alien and is green for some reason? Like i still don't understand why they chose a crappy cgi green alien over some like invisible paranormal thing that just moved stuff around.
