James Frawley, the Emmy-winning director who brought both the Monkees and the Muppets to screen success during a prolific television and film career spanning five decades, has died. He was 82. Frawley died on Jan. 22 at his home in Indian Well, as first reported in the Palm Springs Desert Sun.
Frawley was born in Houston in September 1936 but he was an heir of Hollywood as the youngest son of I Love Lucy and My Three Sons co-star William Frawley, who Lucille Ball hailed as “one of the greatest character actors of all time.” Show biz beckoned the second-generation Frawley who became an actor himself, first on stage and then and in classic 1960s television fare such as Gunsmoke, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Perry Mason, My Favorite Martian, Dr. Kildare, The Outer Limits and I, Spy.

The Monkees are your overwhelmingly favorite band to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. They received 46% of support in our recent poll about snubbed rock groups. Of the dozen choices in our poll, the only other band to have double digit votes was Three Dog Night with 17%.

Drake and Post Malone had the highest volume of on-demand streams and Ed Sheeran has the top song in Nielsen Music’s mid-year report for the six-month period ending June 28, 2018, which was released Friday morning.

The billing is more than a little misleading. “Universal Soldier” cohorts Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren may be listed in the credits (and promoted in the advertising art) as co-stars of “Black Water,” but it’s up to Van Damme to do most of the damage in this routine VOD-centric action thriller set aboard a submarine employed as a CIA black site. Throughout most of the movie’s perceptibly padded running time, Lundgren’s character is incarcerated in a dank prison cell on the sub — next door to the one in which Van Damme’s character fleetingly cools his heels — where we periodically see him reading, exercising, meditating, and generally looking very Zen. To call this a cameo role would be overly generous. Truth to tell, Lundgren enjoys a greater percentage of screen time, and engages in slightly more rough stuff, in the punchy music video for Imagine Dragons’ “Believer.

Pride, the celebration of the Lgbtq community through the month of June each year, is as good an occasion to mark quite how much progress in the battle for equality has been made, and how far there is to go. “Believer,” a sweetly earnest new documentary airing on HBO, has plenty of the latter; it exposes the painful ostracization and hatred of gay people in the Mormon community. But it shows plenty of progress, too, embodied in the person of Dan Reynolds, an appealing protagonist whose status as a proud ally is a splendid and sympathetic example of a society-wide change of heart that’s happening, albeit too slowly.
Reynolds, the lead singer of Grammy-winning rock group Imagine Dragons, is straight, and married to a woman. But he’s become increasingly troubled by the antigay beliefs, implicitly and explicitly stated, of his faith, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints...

Imagine Dragons are the front-runners to win Top Duo or Group at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. That’s according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have given us their picks in our predictions center thus far. It would be their second victory in the category following their win in 2014, which would tie them with Destiny’s Child as the second most awarded group in this category — One Direction holds the record with three wins. But Imagine Dragons has to watch out for a possible upset by The Chainsmokers.
The Billboard Awards aren’t based on artistry, per se. They reward fan interactions with music through a combination of record sales, radio airplay, streaming performance, touring, and social media interaction, the same criteria used to determine the Billboard charts. The song was king at last night’s 66th annual Bmi Pop Awards held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills honoring Mark Ronson. The celebrated five-time Grammy winning artist/producer/songwriter is the first to receive the Bmi Champion Award at the ceremony in recognition not only of his creative track record, but also for his philanthropy, including his patronage of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which works to provide a musical alternative to drugs for at-risk youth.
“This is like my bar mitzvah, except there are fewer family members,” joked Ronson on the red carpet. “But it might be equally embarrassing. I was surprised when my manager Brandon [Creed] told me I’d be getting this award. It doesn’t seem like I’ve achieved that much. But I’m happy to accept it it. In a room full of songwriters, it’s all your peers, which is different from most awards.

Watch out New York. According to New Jersey’s newly elected Gov. Phil Murphy, the Garden State’s film and television production tax credit will be returning soon.
The Governor made a surprise appearance Saturday night at the seventh annual Montclair Film Festival’s closing night festivities and announced that he will re-establish the state’s long defunct film production incentive.
“This is a great state not just to watch films,” Murphy said. “We have got to get back to doing what we used to do really well and make them in New Jersey. We have the artists. And by the way – I’m going to sign a law in the next few weeks that will give the financial incentives back.”
It’s been more than eight years since former Gov. Chris Christie suspended the state’s film tax program.

The first trailer of Believer, the highly-anticipated remake of Johnnie To’s 2012 Hong Kong crime thriller Drug War, has been unveiled ahead of its May 24th release in South Korea.
Lee Hae-young, the director of The Silenced, brings to the screen the tale of detective Won-ho (Cho Jin-woong from A Hard Day). He teams up with drug dealer Rak (Ryu Jun-yeol of A Taxi Driver) in the hopes of infiltrating and taking down a major crime syndicate that oversees the dark world of drug trade in South Korea.
The film will also act as a final bow for the late actor Kim Joo-hyuk, who sadly passed away this last November. If the trailer is any indication, however, his turn as the crazed drug kin pin Ha-rim will be a memorable, worthy swan song.
Buckle up and check out the action-packed, fast-paced trailer below.

Tuesday night on “The Voice,” D.R. King from Team Kelly Clarkson and Rayshun Lamarr from Team Adam Levine were named America’s bottom two artists in the live Top 12 results episode. Both singers were given the chance to sing for America’s instant save, with D.R. choosing to perform The Temptations‘ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” After the performance America voted live to send Rayshun through to next week’s Top 11, thereby eliminating D.R. from the reality TV competition. Watch D.R.’s final “The Voice” performance video above.

Kelly Clarkson may only be a rookie coach on “The Voice” but she has assembled one of the stronger teams heading into the Top 12. We asked you which of the three artists still on her team could take the season 14 title on this NBC reality competition series. Your favorite, with a whopping 81% of the vote is Brynn Cartelli. That isn’t so surprising given that she won the first public vote when the Top 24 performed on April 16.
In second place with 11% of the vote is Kaleb Lee, who advanced to the Top 12 when he came out on top in the second public vote on April 18. Shelton’s personal pick, D.R. King, has the backing of just 9% of our readers.

Kelly Clarkson continues to prove to be a strong competitor in her first season as a coach on “The Voice.” She heads into the Top 12 on April 23 with one of the strongest of the four teams. Criminal Minds ends its 13th season on such a cruel, cruel note, as the team's investigation into a former agent's bizarre account leads to a discovery they couldn't have predicted -- and one that puts more than one of their own in danger.
But that's the second hour, "Believer," of the season finale. The first hour, "Mixed Signals," sees the team work a run-of-the-mill case, one that leads to one of the agents revealing a bit about her past.

On the April 16 episode of “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest revealed that only seven of the dozen singers were moving on to the live shows. Each of those Top 24 contestants had to perform both solo and in duets with celebrities in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. In what I can only describe as American Idol‘s belated tribute to Easter, Sunday’s episode featured a wonderfully bewildering conversation about baby chickens, led by noted animal biologist Lionel Richie.
While discussing the growth of contestant Alyssa Raghu, Richie noted, “Have you ever in your life thought for a moment: You start out with a chicken — a little chicken — on Monday, and by the end of the week, it’s a full-grown chicken?”
“Was it the chicken or the egg first?” asked Katy Perry. (A logical follow-up!)
“Well, the egg comes first,” Richie replied too quickly. “No, the chicken!
