Watchable but mediocre.
melissamariekrall15 January 2020
I watched the original series and I did enjoy it, but I always felt it was a little bit overrated. I do feel Gen Q is generally more surface level than the original. The plots are predictable and the show in general is a little underwhelming. I hate to say this, but I find the actress that plays Finley to be borderline unwatchable. Her acting has the subtlety of a hammer. That being said, I think most the acting in the series is heavy handed, so fault could lie with the director.

Overall it's watchable, although sometimes it doesn't really hold my attention. But it's fine if you've run out of stuff to watch.

What the F word with this backlash? The L Word is back and it's not bad at all!
catsy2930 December 2019
The L Word changed my life. I was a very confused 14 year Colombian girl living in a very small city with my very Catholic family. I was not old enough to watch the show but fk it, I finally understood why I felt out of place and I didn't "get it" when my friends talked about some "boy being super hot". I realized that I was, and I am, lesbian. I know the show ended up being crap. But we can't let the bad things overshadow what this show meant, and still means, to people like me.

My girlfriend and I were afraid of watching this new generation, we were afraid of watching a disaster even worse that what ended up to be the original show. We were afraid that "The L Word", the lesbian word, would fall in the background. I am not against the Q generation, but I do feel that we lesbians all around the world are losing great spaces like for example: all women, lesbian bars. I love that today, people are not afraid of putting on, or not to putting on, a label. But we need The L Word right now more than ever. You can see for yourself. Search how many lesbian bars have disappeared all around the globe in the last 10 years, it's sad. There are just a couple left.

I just watched the first 2 episodes and I feel so happy. I am feeling like a teenager, watching the show on mute with the captions on, every Sunday at 11pm on school's nights. Feeling scared and happy at the same time. Waiting the whole week just for that one hour of television where I could watch women like me. We did exist! I was not the only one!

I think the choices they made with the old characters are great. I think this new show is very smart and it keeps the essence of the first seasons of the original one. I am very happy with this transition.

I really want this show to succeed. I want to know more about the old characters, I want cameos. But also, I want to know more about the new characters. I am very excited and enjoyed the hell out of these episodes.

Yeah, the show is silly sometimes but it doesn't take itself too seriously and shouldn't we. This show was and still is groundbreaking, it's tone varies but the message is very clear.

I am very glad Jennifer, Leisha and Kate did this. And I am so happy that they are the producers and have a lot of creative power. They can't let Ilene Chaiken ruin this again.

Watch it. I was not going to to do it because of the reviews and that is so stupid. Just give it an opportunity.

I love this cast, they have great chemistry.

This show is not about fixing the mistakes made in the past. They can't resurrect Dana and, they actually did a great job with the Jenny situation....one line was more than enough to end that mess.

I hope to get a lot of more seasons. Why the LGBTQ+ community hates the LGBTQ+ community so much?

Like for real. I don't get why anyone can be pissed at this show. Just don't watch it if you don't like it but you can't say it's not a great deal for our community and for us, lesbians.

Lesbian, from Lesbos. The origin of the L word is beautiful. Read about Sappho, read her poems. We should be proud of it and we should celebrate it.

We need more shows like this. Visibility is our best allied, don't forget that.

It's not that bad!!!
bangel332228 December 2019
I'm seeing a lot of hate towards this, because of course, people are comparing it to the original show. Now, as an original fan, I would have much preferred if all the old cast had come back. I love the old cast, even crazy Jenny. However for whatever reason they haven't brought back the original cast and they've got a new cast...and I don't mind them at all. I think the girl who plays Dani is a great actress. I really like her character. I like the new blonde girl. (Forgot her name). I am not however keen on Dani's fiancée or their male roommate. But it's minor. It's still good and I'm loving the return of Bette, Alice and Shane. I'm glad they're the main characters and not background characters as there were some rumours they weren't going to be prominently featured. So 3 episodes in, I'm giving it a solid 6. I'm sure it will get better. It's worth a watch.

The L Word - Modernized
wobielee9 December 2019
Amazing! It can only get better... Feels a little daunting at first, whilst getting to know the new characters and a new plot. Then the original ladies come back with more grit than ever and make you feel at home again. Credit due for doing something new and for pushing boundaries - to make this a safer world for everyone to be themselves!

I wanna change my review
moov_e_c_er6 August 2021
I just finished season 2 episode 1. It was SO BORING I want to go and get drunk and die in the road. I usually see where the idea is and where it could go but this was so stupid and slow I don't know why it was even written down, let alone supposedly story boarded, scheduled and shot. How about all the characters die in an explosion except like 4 of them and it's a post apocalyptic world... oh wait that would be too interesting. There is no chemistry, no reason, no substance. It is like they wrote down a list of all The L Word original was about, deleted all the interesting things, then left a line "lesbians" and then wrote "the stuff you regret spending your time with" like it was meant to be a big joke but some idiot in the room thought it was a great plan. PULL THIS SHOW OFF THE AIR and put anything else in its place. Give me the money and I'll give you interesting characters and storylines!

Initially haters were the only reviews!

Warning: Spoilers
I signed up for Showtime just to watch this new season. After the first 2 episodes I looked at reviews and it was very low. 2/10. It seemed as if people that believed it was going to be the same as the first series were highly disappointed and writing about it. They just didn't realize that times have changed. Its widely accepted and now protected. I thought they did a great job. I cancelled Showtime until next season comes out. Of course the characters have changed a lot. More than 10 years have gone by. But this series has stories to tell. Since the rating have now gone up. 7/10. I hope we get more episodes next season, and that this series runs for at least as many seasons as the first time around. Thanks Jennifer Beals for your continued representation. You are a true ally to LGBTQ COMMUNITY. I was completely blown away with Laurel Holloway's cameo appearance. It was so unexpected. Because I truly believed she would not be in this series at all. When I heard Pam Grier wouldn't be back, I did suspect that she had died in some form. So, I did see that coming. But looking forward to who else does make cameos in the future.

Mixed feelings.
ndy-0131831 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's understandable why they made new storylines for the og characters. But the whole thing just doesn't hit home. It was like watching football for 6 hours straight, until someone changed the tv channel to a baseball game. Both sports, but different. The whole new characters thing too, It's too forced. I'd rather them be introduced to the audience one by one through each og characters, like Lena that were introduced through an ongoing storyline for shane. I had high hopes for this, sad to be dissapointed.

L is for lost
JRH8718 August 2021
I'm biased in writing this since I'm comparing the original but one can't help do that when some of the same cast members are in this one. What I loved about the first one was it's rawness, it's artiness, it's intellect. No one, besides Bette maybe, was established and you're watching this group of gay friends find their way in life with all the drama in tow. Some storylines were risqué for the time, which made it all the more interesting. Cut to now and all of our beloved characters are well established, living these high flying lives that just seems so untrue to the characters that they were and it takes away a certain quality and relatability from them. We're now expected to find this in these new characters but the writing just doesn't quite live up to that same quirky standard. I understand this is a different show and perhaps they had to sell it that way to bring it back, perhaps they felt they needed a younger generation for a younger audience to relate to. It's not a bad show and the new characters aren't terrible, but there's a certain depth missing here. There was more to the L Word than affairs, it was about power dynamics, whilst at the same time being goofy and at times off the wall. GQ seems lost in a soap opera style drama and that comedic aspect seems absent. Which for an audience still deprived of real representation in the mainstream, might not seem that bad, but for others expecting more than this, you'll likely be disappointed.

Edit: the new season picked up, likely due to Tina and Bette coming back together. But it seemed slightly tacky in my opinion, just for viewers sake that love Tibette, it didn't seem so raw, more just wanting to appeal to the audience. The other characters have certainly improved in terms of likability. Alice is the star of the show, it would be nothing without her.

Ummm...
cartmannn-5315614 March 2022
Well perhaps if the actors could act??? Finley.. please. Worst actor. And from the amount of people who say the same. Ummm, yeah.

Jennifer B, best Actor on anything she does. Thank heavens she came back.

Otherwise, it's just ok. It's missing the spark that the original had.

From Dana , to Jenny to Marina to Helena.

Speaking of Helena, she was awesome. Wish she was back.

Sad Downward Spiral
romanaclay27 January 2020
This is my fourth rewrite and probably my last. After season 1 of the reboot, I mused about giving it 5 or 6 stars and ended up with 7 because despite its many flaws, I couldn't turn away. Season 2 does nothing to address those flaws and only amplifies them.

At the heart of the issue is the truly dismal writing and recycled plots. What I mean by the latter is that every episode feels like the last -- lovers hook up for a 45 minute relationship, go their separate ways, and move on to someone else in the circle. A long term relationship is maybe two episodes. The sex is furtive, clawing, and frantic Passion quickly turns to disillusionment. Couples mate and run. There's virtually no romance or tenderness to be found.

Many user reviews criticize the acting and justifiably so. Leisha Haley (Alice) is the only actor who seems comfortable in her role in both seasons. In season 2, Kate Moernig (Shane) starts to mature and surprisingly, so does Leo Sheng (Micah). As for the rest of the cast, Jennifer Beals looks like she knows how badly her character is written and and can't help turning Bette into a self-caricature. Jacqueline Toboni, insufferable as Finley, is completely over the top and slides further downhill as the episodes progress.

Shane and Micah are the only ones who show the remotest sign of character growth. Given that that the story is set in LA, you'd think that someone would be seeing a therapist. And what's with the cinematography? In contrast to the original, the dark interiors make GenQ seem like film noir without the noir.

Edited excerpts from my review of January, 2020, which followed Season 1:

1. Nice to see several of our favorite characters return to reprise their roles from the original.

2. Let's face it -- GenQ is a soap set in an atypical milieu. It's not that far from the original in its absurd story lines, it's just that the original had more finesse and imagination. It was also educational in the way it presented the nuances of lesbian culture.

3. Unlike most of the lesbian and gay couples I know, there are no long-term, stable relationships shown here.

4. There are some truly annoying characters -- mainly Finley (Jacqueline Toboni) and Jose (Freddy Miyares), the latter now thankfully gone.

5. As for the acting, a lot of it seemed under-rehearsed or perhaps the product of one or two takes. I have to blame the directors for many of the cringe-worthy performances or for settling for whatever the actors gave them, but it could have been questionable casting.

How many more experienced actors didn't audition or turned down parts because of the graphic sexuality (mainly in Season 1) -- deep kisses, gratuitous nude scenes, and mucho faux sex. In the original, Jennifer Beals (Bette) was never exposed past her underwear or she discreetly covered her breasts when she was shown naked in bed with a lover (true, too, of Marlee Matlin, Cybill Shepherd, Jane Lynch, and other A-listers). Clearly she had enough star power to draw her own lines, while newcomers had to accept what they were offered -- well, it's better than waiting tables forever.

I really don't have a problem with sex scenes, graphic or not, but they need to make sense in the context of the story. There was something about the graphic sexuality in the original L-Word that seemed more right, especially in the early Jenny Schecter story line when she's finding her voice as a writer and exploring her sexuality.

6. As the risk of beating this to death, much of the dialogue has real issues. When I can sit on the couch and practically mouth the next lines word-for-word before the characters speak them, then something's wrong. Many of the conflicts between the couples were so cliched and devoid of logic, that I had to fast forward to the next scene.

This also refers back to my criticism of the directors. A good director knows how to motivate their actors, even when a scene is poorly written, or knows when to send the script back for a rewrite. Granted there must have been time and budget constraints, but the script should be polished before shooting begins and the writers need to be on hand to make revisions when it's clear that something isn't working.

7. The music truly sucks. The background music, the soppy ballads, and the opening and closing credit tunes all suck. Where's BETTY when we need them?

Finally, what is it about Showtime, the HBO wannabe, that keeps their dramas from realizing their full potential. Unlike HBO ("The Sopranos," "The Wire"), AMC ("Breaking Bad," "Better Call Saul"), Amazon ("Mrs. Maisel," "Fleabag"), and FX ("Fargo"), among others, Showtime's series are always straining for the top shelf, but never quite reaching it. After watching episodes of "Dexter," "Shameless," and "Ray Donovan," I came a way with a feeling that they're drawing on a pool of B-list writers or that the showrunners (here, Marya-Lewis Ryan) keep underestimating the audience. GenQ feels like its been dumbed down for the lowest common denominator.

Is it a cultural thing at Showtime's executive level? Granted, HBO has had it's share of turkeys (Alan Ball's awful "Here and Now" and the unwatchable "Hello Ladies"), but when they're good, they're very, very good.

Compared to the disappointing Season 1, Season 2 was on such a downward spiral that it was barely watchable. I kept hoping for redemption, but it never came. If there's a Season 3, I won't be there.

Amazing Start!
beth-schaffter8 December 2019
The first episode was amazing. Everything I wanted in a reboot of one of my favorite shows. There are still questions left unanswered, but I have high hopes for it. So excited for this series. Seeing Shane, Alice, and Bette reconnecting as well as enjoying the new characters was fantastic.

The original show was a pioneer and truly affected many people's lifes. Having these characters back along with new fresh actors, telling new stories is dreamy. The lgbt community absolutely needed to be represented on tv after this huge hiatus. Thank you for coming back and let's hope for a season 2.

What the heck?
moov_e_c_er6 August 2021
I watched season 1 and it was odd compared to original. New characters and new direction. But I watched it a few times to see past my own expectations as I was excited before first watch, a little disappointed at first viewing, and then second time around was better but could have been better at times. Now started season 2 and it's so boring I keep shutting my eyes and trying not to roll my eyeballs back in boredom. Is this show bad because it's produced by actors? They should know what works with all the work they've done and it's easy to see what succeeded and got positive following and what should never be done again. I'm watching the concept of the show but I could do a hell of a lot better and improve every single episode and concept. They need to hire a producer who brings in the flash, the bang, the story and character arch, the meat to the table. This entire show so far is side dish, not artsy and not interesting but it SHOULD be. NOTE TO CAST AND CREW: Wake the hell up and make this show interesting and stop feeding us slow crap.

Something's wrong
brookevale9 December 2019
I loved the original L Word so much so that I watched all seasons three times. Something felt off from the first scene of Generation Q. Bad writing? Bad directing? Bad set design or filming? I missed the homegrown feeling of the original L Word. I just didn't feel connected to any of the new characters or the former characters reprising roles. It didn't flow like the former series. I am not a critic. I can only share my experience. I couldn't wait for the former series' new episodes. It took me five tries to finish the first episode of Genetation Q. I don't know what it will take for me to get motivated to watch episode 2. Maybe they should've kept the show's main location at Bette's sister's coffee shop. I think younger viewers unfamiliar with the original L Word might receive this new series better than those of us who tuned in for season 1, episode 1 from the day it premiered.

You have to give it a chance
ngrebely16 January 2020
I'll admit when I watched the first episode i was disappointed at first. However because I loved the original so much I decided to keep watching and I actually started to really like it. The acting was a little cheesy at first with the new characters but they do grow on you. I'm really excited they picked up a second season. I'm actually sad now that there's not more episodes. I think this show has a good chance of being successful, you just have to give it a chance.

Deflated
Smartcandyforme24 December 2019
I'm feel deflated, disappointed and disillusioned. The cast is flat, emotionless. Drop in celebrity guest spots are used to prop up an otherwise weak story line. You cannot remake a show like the original L Word. Leisha Haley, Jennifer Beals, and Katherine Moennig seem to be the only reasons to stick around.

Loved the original
jamielireyn16 June 2020
This is mostly bad acting and unbelievable plot. 90% of the good acting is from the actors from the first series the rest are painfully awkward.

The plot doesn't make sense and isn't realistic. Meet your landlord the first episode, the next day you're hanging out all the time and they're best friends w your roommates too.

Everyone on the show is constantly having sex like they just met, but are in long term monogamous relationships instead of a focus on deep connection, perpetuating stereotypes. It just feels fake and Focused on being weird to be trendy than something different like the first series.
