It’s been nearly a year since Netflix stopped offering the Basic plan to new customers, but existing users could still access it.
The takeover of Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan is continuing. One report in April suggested that the streamer had 7 million customers on the tier in the United States and Canada alone, and Netflix has made plenty of moves to try and enhance the plan’s attractiveness in the eyes of customers since its November 2022 launch. The streamer has already sunset its cheapest ad-free plan for new subscribers, but existing customers of the Basic plan have been allowed to keep it until now. A new report from Streaming Better indicates that Netflix has been warning some subscribers that they are about to lose access to their Basic plan, as the streamer tries to get as many viewers to opt for the ad-supported option as possible.

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

Adam Driver is an actor who has appeared in numerous roles in many movies, which include Lincoln (2012), Frances Ha (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Marriage Story (2019), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), and Ferrari (2023), but one role stands out among mainstream fans, which is what of Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, from the Star Wars franchise. And while the sequel trilogy was more clumsy than perfect, even ridiculous at times, Driver’s performance has been praised and Kylo Ren is still considered as one of the trilogy’s most important characters.
And while Kylo Ren died in the films, we have seen that Star Wars characters can – more or less miraculously – reappear in the series, as was the case with Darth Maul and Palpatine, so why not Kylo Ren? The actor was recently asked about the possibility of returning to the role of Kylo Ren, and we will reveal what he said.

Rightly or wrongly, streaming stocks have been judged by subscriber numbers. It’s not a complete picture of a company’s business, but it’s a key metric for judging the health of a platform. That’s why Netflix surprised investors by announcing it will no longer provide subscriber numbers starting next year.
In its letter to investors, Netflix said, “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential. But now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (Fcf). We are also developing new revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different business impact.

Universal and Amblin aren’t wasting any time revamping the dinosaur-centric “Jurassic World,” “Jurassic Park” franchise, as the two studios are looking to begin shooting the seventh film in the series. To be directed by Gareth Edwards (“Rogue One,” “The Creator”) and already starring Scarlett Johansson (“Black Widow,” “Marriage Story“), Deadline reports that Jonathan Bailey (“Bridgerton,” “Fellow Travelers”) is in early talks to join “Jurassic World 4,” which has been described as a soft reboot without any characters or actors from the other films expected to appear (although that could change).

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. At the heart of it all is Stone, who delivers yet another tour de force, as noted by critics.

Scarlett Johansson has found her next big franchise, and she's going to tangle with dinosaurs this time around. The "Black Widow" actor has officially entered talks to star in the new "Jurassic World" movie currently in the works at Universal Pictures. The project has been coming together very quickly behind the scenes in recent weeks. Should Johanson sign on the dotted line, it would provide some major A-list power to the proceedings.

There are currently no details on the character Johansson would be playing in the "Jurassic" universe. The indication is that this is going to be a fresh start for the franchise that could pave the way for a new trilogy. A whopping 26 (or 70.3%) of the last decade’s worth of acting Oscar recipients – including 2024’s Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) – were born in the United States. Also counted here is Joaquin Phoenix, who originates from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. 2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.

There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. When the news of this broke it was a welcome change to many viewers across the UK, as for years the exclusivity of Sky has left the award show inaccessible for many film fans. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations.
Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn’t in attendance to receive the award).

Heading into Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” — which was shut out. Apple had picked up 13 nods, including 10 for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also drew a goose egg.
Since 2017, Netflix has now won 23 Oscars in all.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Our odds currently indicate that Randolph (3/1) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Blunt (4/1), Brooks (4/1), Ferrera (9/2), and Foster (9/2).
The only one of these five actresses with any previous Oscar bids to her name is Foster, who is also this year’s oldest nominee by two full decades. Before she bagged two lead trophies for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she broke through at age 14 with a supporting mention for “Taxi Driver” (1977), becoming the seventh youngest Oscar-nominated performer at the time. A fun ensemble join Adam Sandler and George Clooney for Noah Baumbach’s latest film for Netflix, Jay Kelly.
——
At the back end of last year, we covered the story that hot off the success of co-writing 2023’s highest-grossing film, Barbie. Noah Baumbach was returning to Netflix to make another movie.
The director of Frances Ha and The Squid And The Whale has made Netflix his home over the past few years, releasing his last four films exclusively on the streaming platform.
When the film was initially announced, we learned that Adam Sandler would be once again working with Baumbach following their collaboration on 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories. That film marked the beginning of Baumbach’s relationship with Netflix and the director has since gone on to release Marriage Story and White Noise on the platform.
George Clooney is also starring in the upcoming project, entitled Jay Kelly. Clooney replaced...

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our odds currently indicate that “American Fiction” (7/2) will win the award, followed in order of likelihood by “Oppenheimer” (18/5), “Barbie” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Zone of Interest” (9/2).
This marks only the 14th instance in 96 years of all five Best Adapted Screenplay-nominated films also being in the running for Best Picture. Prior to the last time in 2017 – the year “Moonlight” achieved dual victories – this had happened only twice during the 21st century (2011; 2013) and once during the latter half of the 20th (1965). The bulk of cases occurred almost annually from 1934 to 1943, with the only inapplicable year being 1937.
Respective “The Zone of Interest” and “Oppenheimer” writers Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan are simultaneously nominated for Best Director, while Nolan is also set to face off against “American Fiction” scripter Cord Jefferson in the Best Picture race.

Scarlett Johansson Once Expressed Her Discomfort With Being A “Recognizable Face”(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Many often desire fame and popularity, but people do not know the perils of being a public figure. With the advent of camera phones, even ordinary people can breach celebrities’ personal space. The actors and actresses often speak about it in their interviews and say how annoying that is sometimes. Marvel star Scarlett Johansson once opened up about the dark side of fame and called it weird.
ScarJo has been in the entertainment industry for a long time and has done some notable works. But her fame reached new heights after appearing as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka MCU. She played the part from 2010 to 2021. Besides her work in the MCU, she has been praised for her performances in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, which earned her two Academy Awards nods.

In 2022, Dan Lin, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” was in negotiations to become head of DC Studios. It was a singular opportunity to reimagine the company behind Superman, Batman and other costumed heroes. But talks broke down. Among the reported reasons was that David Zaslav, the head of DC’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, and Lin could not agree on a way to properly compensate him for leaving his production company Rideback for the new gig.
So why, less than two years later, has Lin decided to take a different corporate job, overseeing Netflix’s film division? And what kinds of obstacles will he need to overcome if Netflix is going to raise the quality of the movies it makes?
For Lin, Netflix offers a vast consumer base, one that overshadows those of rivals like Max or Disney+. It’s also more stable than other media companies.

Producer, studio veteran and Rideback founder Dan Lin has been named chairman of Netflix Film to replace the outgoing Scott Stuber, effective April 1.
Lin will report to Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria and worked with the streamer on The Two Popes, and the new live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The appointment came sooner than many in Hollywood expected after it was announced in January that Stuber was to depart after seven years.
It is understood Lin’s name was considered early on in the process to replace Stuber, alongside former Universal chief Stacey Snider, and Disney’s Sean Bailey.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Barbie, a cultural phenomenon that became 2023’s highest-grossing film at $1.45 billion worldwide. It’s also got eight Oscar nominations, including for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s screenplay, which AMPAS put in the Adapted category despite other bodies — including the Writers Guild — clocking it as Original.
Either way, Barbie’s a doll, and the script boasts one of the most talked-about monologues in recent memory, delivered by America Ferrara’s Gloria in the film.
The story centers on Margot Robbie’s “stereotypical” Barbie, whose every day is the best day ever, until a glitch occurs which sends her to the real world (accompanied by Ryan Gosling’s Ken). There, they discover truths they’d never imagined — some hard, some misguided and some very poignant — before heading back to Barbie Land to set things straight.

With film distributors becoming stingier about physical media and defaulting to streaming, The Criterion Collection has been picking up slack. For instance, Criterion has released physical copies of acclaimed Netflix originals like "The Irishman," "Roma," and "Marriage Story."

Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Cord Jefferson will write and executive produce the upcoming Scarlett Johansson limited series, which serves as her first major television role.
The “American Fiction” filmmaker has boarded the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of John Katzenbach’s novel “Just Cause.” Additionally, acclaimed writer John Wells has joined the project, co-writing the series with Jefferson, and will also serve as an executive producer.
“Just Cause,” first published in 1992, tells the story of Matt Cowart, a Miami reporter. In this adaptation, Johansson will portray a female iteration of Cowart, named Madison “Madi” Cowart. The narrative follows Cowart after receiving a letter from a death row inmate claiming innocence. The ensuing investigation not only casts doubt on the inmate’s guilt but also uncovers other hidden horrors.
This project marks the second adaptation of “Just Cause,” the first being a 1995 film featuring Sean Connery, Blair Underwood, Laurence Fishburne, Ed Harris,...

Scarlett Johansson is starring in a new Super Bowl commercial!
The 39-year-old actress stars in M&m’s commercial that aired during the 2024 Super Bowl on Sunday (February 11) alongside NFL legends Dan Marino, Terrell Owens and Bruce Smith.
The commercial pokes fun at the fact even though Dan, Terrell, and Bruce are considered NFL greats, they never won a Super Bowl similar to how Scarlett has never won an Oscar.
Keep reading to find out more…“Only Super Bowl winners get a ring, right? Wrong! M&m’s presents the Almost Champions: Ring of Comfort,” Dan says. “It’s actual science.”
Dan then goes on to explain what the rings are made of, saying, “First we took comforting, M&m’s peanut butter and compressed it into real diamonds.”
“Then we polish them with the sighs of those who almost won a Super Bowl,” Dan continues as Terrell and Bruce are seen breathing over the diamonds.

In 2020, Laura Dern celebrated with her very first Oscar win for “Marriage Story”! It was a fitting gift to the veteran actress, who has starred in dozens of quality films throughout her lengthy career. Let’s take a look back at her career by ranking her 16 greatest film performances.
Dern began her career as a teenager close to four decades ago. She seemed to initially aspire to a more normal life but her attempts to finish her college degree at the University of Southern California were continually interrupted by obtaining plum film roles. That she’d eventually settle into an acting career isn’t surprising since her father Bruce Dern is a two time Oscar nominee and her mother Diane Ladd a three time contender
Dern would go on to earn two Oscar nominations of her own for “Rambling Rose” (1991) and “Wild” (2014), plus work steadily in both film and television...

For a while, it seemed as though Netflix’s sole focus was to become the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. With the releases of “Maestro,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Roma,” “Mudbound,” “Beasts of No Nation,” and others, many in entertainment felt that the streaming service that disrupted the entire industry was trying to backdoor its way into the good graces of Hollywood by releasing prestige pictures in theaters. Then, as the entire movie theater business was still trying to get back on its feet following the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns, Netflix put “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” into theaters — for an admittedly limited amount of time. However, it appears that the days of the world’s largest streamer making massive efforts to release its films in cinemas might be over.
