It Doesn't Look Good...
lassegalsgaard13 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Even though this episode wasn't as good as last week's, I am surprised how consistent "Supergirl" is keeping itself this season. I will say that the writing in this episode was really good, and that I thought the dialogue is quick and snappy. I also liked the jokes that were sprinkled in, for example when Alex told Purity to shorten down her monologue about who she is. I sat when that monologue was being delivered and thought "This is weird," and I was very happy when Alex commented on the fact that it was weird. I also like a lot of the conversations and character interactions, more than I have in the past. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the new showrunners, but I do know that I appreciate their writing a lot more than the previous ones. I have enjoyed the writing a lot this season and I hope that it will continue throughout the rest of it.

However, there was some writing that bothered me this week. I think Alex was a completely different character this episode than she has ever been before, and maybe that's because of Purity and what she does to the people around her. We find out that Alex is still having feelings for Maggie, and while I think that it is something she definitely has to deal with, I think that changing her character emotionally is the completely wrong way for that. It also goes against a lot of the development Alex has had this season, so I hope they go back on that.

I continue to enjoy Samantha's story and to see what effect this connection with Reign has on her daughter. She is beginning to notice that something is definitely wrong, and I like how this sets up some new problems for her to get over. Obviously, that leads in to the exploration of the Worldkillers, which I thought was done great in this episode. I like that they all have different powers and that they will probably create some big and dangerous when they are combined. At this moment, we will have to do with what Reign and Purity brings.

And while I liked the character of Purity, I didn't understand why the actress had to turn into a "James Bond" villain. A lot of her delivery sounded like something that would come out of Blofeld, which can be cool if it fits, which it totally didn't in this episode. I also got the idea that these Worldkillers were kind of the same character in a way, but if her performance was an indication, I guess that's not the case.

I also liked the subplot of having Mon-El work on their ship so they could go home. It wasn't something that filled a big part of the episode, but it did have a good part in there. It also gave room for Mon-El and J'onn to have some scenes together and they really do have amazing chemistry with each other. I believed every second of their conversation, and I want to see these characters interact more with each other. This also leads into the final moments of the episode, which I think sets up a whole lot to come and a whole new side to the Legion of Superheroes.

I just hope they aren't going to make Mon-El a boring love interest again. He reveals that he still have feelings for Kara, which I think is a wrong direction to go. He has finally found his place as a member of the Legion of Superheroes, so don't take that away from him. Especially, when that is the only thing that is actually keeping the character remotely interesting.

Supergirl - S03E13 Both Sides Now
j_forbesy6 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode of Supergirl was the last episode before it's two month hiatus. With that, I needed this episode to act a bit like a mid-season finale. I needed it to give us a bit of a tease and keep me interested enough that I'm looking forward to the show returning.

I think this episode did that. This episode is no where near my favourite episode of this entire series, but it is one of my favourites from recent weeks. This episode did what I needed it to and for the first time in this season, I'm pretty much onboard with most plot lines of this season.

One aspect of this season that became really apparent this episode was how strong the three World Killers will be once they are together. We have seen Team Supergirl struggle with two of the individually, so to think what will happen when there is three is a scary thought. This is an aspect I am mixed on. While I want Supergirl and everyone else to go out against a force that involves more then a simple one/two punch combo, I worry that they will simply be too strong, and the way they will overcome them will be anticlimactic.

Focusing more on this episode, I thought the stand out was by far Krys Marshell as Purity and the second World Killer. I thought her performance was excellent because she brought a presence to the screen that not many villains do. I think much of this is because of the character she plays. As the audience, we have a connection to Reign, but with Purity, there is that aspect of unpredictability.

I needed some form of cliffhanger this episode to keep me counting down the days for Supergirl to return and they gave one to us this episode. The reveal that the Legion has another reason for time travelling really interests me. I have really enjoyed what they have done with the Legion this season so for the cliffhanger to be based around their team really spikes me interest for the remained for the season.

While still on the topic of cliffhangers, I like that they teased that Lena might know what is wrong with Sam. While it is borderline ridiculous that she could possibly work out that Sam is Reign based off one spike in aggression but can't pick Kara as Supergirl, I am happy that they have given Lena a purpose for the remaining episode. Lena is a character I feel they need to keep busy in a plot point throughout the season otherwise there isn't much use of her being there.

Moving into a few negatives, I want to start with something small, but it is something I find happens way too much. Just give Martian Manhunter something to do. Whether it is J'onn J'onzz human form or alien form, this show is wasting the talent they have with David Harewood. Granted they did use him for a quick manovour in the opening of the episode, but having him act as moral support or physical roof support by holding up a pillar is something this show needs to cut down on.

To touch on another negative that really stood out this episode, I feel as though the writers are lost with what to do with Alex. Alex is one of my favourite character in this show and I think they really utilised her well in the first two season, however all she has really done this season is act as relationship drama with Maggie, or have aggressive outbursts because she can't control herself because of the relationship drama with Maggie. Alex has always been a strong character but recently I feel as though they have really hit her with the drama stick and most things she does can be linked back to relationship drama. The only positive from Alex this season was the episode she had with Ruby because it has been the only episode that has appropriately handled her emotions and using them to have a positive impact rather than mop around causing drama and then blaming drama.

Overall, I thought this was quite a solid episode. I did enough for me to make me excited to see where this season is going to go. Looking at the season overall, I don't think the first half has started anywhere near as good as season two did, however by what they have done so far since returning, if they close this season out right, this could be the best season of Supergirl we have had.

Another "Take your PMS to work" day for Alex?! C'mon writers, she deserves better!
Icelander6723 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It always infuriates me how extremely _unprofessional_ everyone at that Government Intelligence Agency (!!) is on this show, taking their personal life to work on daily basis like they do. Can you imagine if anyone actually behaved like these people at the _real_ CIA/FBI or the likes? They'd be sent on sick leave in a heartbeat, if not fired o the spot! Ok, so this time it was Alex's turn to go full-on PMS in front of a suspect, seemingly out of nowhere, and seriously overacted to boot, which certainly didn't help. Watching my favourite supporting character get this sloppy treatment from the writers (you could see the "I got it all wrong" coming eons before it did) was an agony to watch. Fortunately, the other side of that confrontation was the saving grace to that entire scene, for the manipulative aspect of our newest baddie made a very interesting impact to this latest addition. But unfortunately, as was way over-advertised much too early, this latest addition is sadly going to be dealt with far too simplistically for what the potential is worth ("We need to save them"), so that's an investment we know already will not pay off. More bad writing, showing the cards too soon - and much too clearly, just to be sure even the dumb viewers get it. Same goes for that convenient 'marriage-going-sour' subplot, another out of nowhere scenario that this far had been absolutely no signs for. It's obvious that someone has been conducting a testgroup poll and hastily calculating the demand for a very predictable rekindle between Kara and Mon-El (*puke*) in order to keep the viewers happy. Speaking of subplot - and now for the better parts of this episode - The teaser for the Legion's ulterior motives, now there's (hopefully!) something worth the wait till the show picks up again. Another thing still to look forward to is the third baddie in this season's main set, we have yet to see any of the potential there and that at least has me still a bit curious. But these two elements, along with the stellar performance of main baddie #2 and a surprisingly adequate FX and action (though Martian Manhunter remains a missed potential as always), is pretty much the only positive things I could say about this one. Here's hoping the final 3rd act will make up for this very uneven season.

Unleash the Worldkillers
ThomasDrufke7 February 2018
Before going on a long 2 month break (to make way for Legends to return and Black Lightning to keep its spot), I expected this episode to end with a huge Reign reveal, and it seemed like it was going that route for a long time. Unfortunately, it was a little bit more anticlimactic. However, luckily the episode kept this season's steady footing and delivered another solid outing.

Samantha continued to have issues regarding her blackouts and it looks like it's finally bleeding into her work life as she had one right in front of Lena. I don't know how they will go about revealing Samantha as Reign, but it sure seems like they are keen on having her return for future seasons. Kara's line about not defeating but saving the world killers makes it clear that Samantha will likely either be redeemed or just simply saved out of her alter ego. And let's be honest, knowing how badly this show needs a good villain, keeping her on for more than one season is not a bad thing.

The new worldkiller, Purity, brought the worst out of Alex, who all of a sudden went on an emotional rage after not believing in redeeming Purity/Julia. As it turns out, Alex has had some deeper regrets/feelings over Maggie and essentially feels lost without her. Sure seems like a retread of plenty of her episode arcs this season, and this one certainly didn't prove to be anything we haven't heard or seen. Perhaps we will finally get some closure towards the back half of this season.

In all, the episode kept the pacing of this season steady, while also making some progress (albeit not as much as I thought) in the Samantha/Reign arc.

Catching up with Supergirl
heniekb16 April 2018
I watched Season 2 & Season 3 over the weekend and overall have mixed reviews but i really enjoyed this episode. 'Purity' was a good introduction and a few other new topics seem to float to the surface. I wish they could make stop Alex moaning about the past relationship or get Maggie back. As a big fan of Mon-El happy to see him getting more screentime and cheering up a little bit as well. It is difficult to find a balance with so many characters but this time they got it right.

Oh look, Supergirl got knocked out again.
bsimpson18920 March 2019
Supergirl is really over dramatized. It is more of a soap opera than a super hero action series.

The good and the bad ...
rvargast17-585-52919625 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Good writing and bad writing ... again. Not bad episode but has big errors. At the start taking a SWAT team with normal weapons against a cryptonian - just nobody in reality would do that, just for redshirts basicly. Its look an agency that handles alien threats just lacks the means to do that - continously. Then when Purity was taken from the train and they fall down from the tracks to the station hall, which is ABOVE them in every universe and then the heroes beaten by a newborn villain (plus J'onn holding the column during the fight to prevend collapse and when the fight ends he just leave is as it is ....) - thats bad. Drama - A, action - E. These bad writings just spoils the show.
