Even though this episode wasn't as good as last week's, I am surprised how consistent "Supergirl" is keeping itself this season. I will say that the writing in this episode was really good, and that I thought the dialogue is quick and snappy. I also liked the jokes that were sprinkled in, for example when Alex told Purity to shorten down her monologue about who she is. I sat when that monologue was being delivered and thought "This is weird," and I was very happy when Alex commented on the fact that it was weird. I also like a lot of the conversations and character interactions, more than I have in the past. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the new showrunners, but I do know that I appreciate their writing a lot more than the previous ones. I have enjoyed the writing a lot this season and I hope that it will continue throughout the rest of it.
However, there was some writing that bothered me this week. I think Alex was a completely different character this episode than she has ever been before, and maybe that's because of Purity and what she does to the people around her. We find out that Alex is still having feelings for Maggie, and while I think that it is something she definitely has to deal with, I think that changing her character emotionally is the completely wrong way for that. It also goes against a lot of the development Alex has had this season, so I hope they go back on that.
I continue to enjoy Samantha's story and to see what effect this connection with Reign has on her daughter. She is beginning to notice that something is definitely wrong, and I like how this sets up some new problems for her to get over. Obviously, that leads in to the exploration of the Worldkillers, which I thought was done great in this episode. I like that they all have different powers and that they will probably create some big and dangerous when they are combined. At this moment, we will have to do with what Reign and Purity brings.
And while I liked the character of Purity, I didn't understand why the actress had to turn into a "James Bond" villain. A lot of her delivery sounded like something that would come out of Blofeld, which can be cool if it fits, which it totally didn't in this episode. I also got the idea that these Worldkillers were kind of the same character in a way, but if her performance was an indication, I guess that's not the case.
I also liked the subplot of having Mon-El work on their ship so they could go home. It wasn't something that filled a big part of the episode, but it did have a good part in there. It also gave room for Mon-El and J'onn to have some scenes together and they really do have amazing chemistry with each other. I believed every second of their conversation, and I want to see these characters interact more with each other. This also leads into the final moments of the episode, which I think sets up a whole lot to come and a whole new side to the Legion of Superheroes.
I just hope they aren't going to make Mon-El a boring love interest again. He reveals that he still have feelings for Kara, which I think is a wrong direction to go. He has finally found his place as a member of the Legion of Superheroes, so don't take that away from him. Especially, when that is the only thing that is actually keeping the character remotely interesting.
