A nice little film
jraychretien19 January 2020
This film should be a lesson for little girls and boys. A family with a history of tragedy are reunited with the father. At a time when womyn were expected to be quiet, pregnant and in the kitchen, some womyn started to say no. This young lady is finding out who she truly is in beautiful rural Ireland. It is nice to see the strength of some womyn being portrayed in this way. The world I live in, most womyn are willing to knock a man who is out of line on his arse so any talk of being unrealistic is laughable. Only a very little man would have his insecurities rattled by this film.

Worth watching, especially as an Irishwoman
niamhnab7 August 2022
I'm Irish. I am a woman. I grew up in Ireland and still live here. My Irishness goes back to Celtic roots. But I'm not part of the Travelling Community. So I have no idea what they would think of this film. And I would really like to know. I saw a lot of truth in the film but only as a person who sees that lifestyle from a distance. I'm curious about what Travellers think of it. I would value that perspective far more than random foreign takes from people who just don't get it.

For me, I loved this film in some respects. I've always had a draw towards nomadic, gypsy living. But I wonder if this film romanticises the Travelling lifestyle as opposed to giving a more honest, starker picture.

I thought most of the actors were very good and recognised quite a few. I love the main character and how gutsy she was. She was very well portrayed.

Some parts of the story were dealt with very well while other aspects felt a little flatter. Aesthetically a nice film. For me, the rambling style of storytelling in the screenplay is reminiscent of life on the road.

As for comments expressing LMAO about a girl wanting to be a boxer in Ireland and idolising Ali, they reflect a blinding ignorance on the part of the viewer. These people clearly never heard about Katie Taylor for one thing.

This film is going to be largely lost on misogynists and people that don't get Irish culture, the tensions that exist between what some call the 'Settled' and the Travelling Communities, and the fighting Female spirit throughout Irish history way back to mythology and pre-Christian and pre-Anglo-Saxon culture here.

For anyone who enjoys a story about a free spirit struggling to break through in an oppressive world, this is definitely worth watching.

Long winded story about life of a young traveller girl. Well acted.
rochfordsimon15 September 2020
I enjoyed this movie. It's over the top at times and too many stretched gaps in the story.

But ultimately tells a great underdog story. Hazel Doupe (Francis) is a superb actress and holds this movie together.

A little bit too much
rbnmelissa14 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was, in my opinion, kind of boring I would say. First of all boxing isn't really my thing, nor is sport so from the start the themme of the movie did not captivate my attention. Seconf of all, I honestly think that the sudden change of the father was weird, it felt like the scene was "too much" and showed non-necessary hatred toward Frances. And also the fact that outof nowhere the father decided that it has to be his son, the fighter was unexpected and unusual. The movie also had huge gaps in the story that kind of made itunrealistic, like when Frances ran right in time to save her brother. To keep it short I didn't like the movie not because of how it was played but mostly because of how it was writtenn, I think that the writer did not thought that way.

Now let's talk about the good point and qualities of this movie . I liked how we saw Frances growing up up not only physically but mostly mentally, it was nice to see the development of this character. I also liked how Frances did not let anyone mess with her family nor herself, she'd always protect them. I really liked the grand-father, who still believed in Frances dreams even in the biggest hardships. He is maybe one of my favorite characters because even with his son causing trouble and not caring about his daughter's dream, the grandfather was always supporting Frances from the beginning till the end. And of course how Frances still believed in herself in herself and did not seem to be bothered by how so many people wanted to drag her down, was really a good lesson for the younger generation.

A Great Actress !
clemencesimitian11 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This story is about Frances, a girl raised in nomadic camps in a rural region of Ireland. She wants to defend her family and her community, but her father, who teaches her to fight doesn't want her to become a boxer because of his sadness.

I find this movie very interesting, thanks to the actors. Hazel Doupe, the girl who plays Frances is very good at her job and knows how to make people who watch her feel emotion. Dara Devaney, France's father, is pretty good too because I was mad at him even if it is a movie.

Even if I think the actors are good, I think this movie was a little bit too long, sometimes it was very boring and the movie was always played in the same places with the same characters. The fight between the sergeant and the gypsy camps was so childish.

Several times in this movie big gaps happen so that's very unrealistic, but that's a movie.

Nevertheless, I really liked the message behind the film, everything boys can do, girls can do it too and girls, even if they live in a traveller group can choose their own future, they don't have to be married and be pregnant when boys want to, it's the woman's choice, not the man's choice. They can do boy's activities too.

Good film
sahuguetl13 April 2022
The film is about a youg Irish traveller girl called Frances who is passionate about boxing . She idolizes Muhammad Ali and wants to become a boxer like him. But her father doesn't want her do boxing because he thinks a woman can't do boxing. He has other projects for his daugther. The relationship between the father and his daugther is the most important thing in the story . I found the story of the film very interesting but it was sometimes boring. I really like Frances, she is a very good actress. The film is around the relationship between the father anddd his daugther , I found their relationship very interesting .

I also really like the casting and I found the father excellent in his role. The ending of the film is for me a very good end because the father accepetd that his daugther ddid boxing. The end is the best scene off the film. And also, it would have been very cool if Frances had seen Muhammad Ali.

Beautiful Hearfelt
mariuchka9 February 2020
A beautiful portrayal of the life and hardships of the Irish Traveler/Tinkers and the life and kinship of the clan. The love is real. This touched my soul and heart. If you have no Irish in you, you will probably not feel it. Great and beautiful film. The photography and beautiful Ireland I was never able to get to in my lifetime

The film
chiaravilalta13 April 2022
It was a touching movie because the characters have difficult relations between each other. Especially between the father and the daugther , Frances. I find that this represents the opinion and the way ok thinking of certain men. This film is a tragedy because the story begins with the life of Frances as a child and she witness the death of her mother and also because her relationship with her father throughout her adolescence becomes very complicated. It is rather boring because I can't see the point at the end of the film. The acting is powerful . The father thinks hi's daugther can't fight and says it's a man is thing, all through the movie he treats her like an inferior person, and at the end he realizes that she can and that boxing is not just for men and that it was her passion and Mohamed Ali , his idol.

Interesting movie !
lucasbidanl13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film is entituled "Float like a butterfly". It was directed and written by Carmel Winters. Hazel Doupe is the main actress. She is a superb actress. This fascinating film ais about a gyspy family with a story full of tragedy. At the end, the family is reunited with the father. The plot is absolutely touching with the relationship between the father and his children. The cast is good, to my taste. It has a surprising and dramatic anding though. Personally, I find the acting isn't natural and true to life and the sound effects are dull, I think that's why I'm confused about this movie. But the film has a beautiful and inspiring story, especially for all women. To conclude, It's a great piece of film making. I thoroughly recommend it. So on a scale of 0 to 10 I give this film a five.

Warning: Spoilers
A family with a trafic story that will reunite children with their father. I enjoyed this movie. This touched my soul and heart because Frances ( the girl actress) lives a difficult life. This film is very realistic because sometimes Travellers live this story. Frances is a young woman who has a very difficult role in her life because she protects her brother like a father, she fights for her liberty. And she shows admiration for Muhammed Ali. I really liked this film for the relationship she has with her father. This film is a very good lesson for young girls or boys, I think it's good to see how women live in this world. We're not just here to get married and have children. It's just my opinion but boxing is a good activity to let off steam and keep in good shape. That girl is inspired by Muhammed for his actions and his way of fighting and not for rhe numbers of KOs he achieved.

The beautiful film
loaneperez13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film is very beautiful, I like Hazel Doupe's talent the battle between Frances and the boy. I like the horses in the film. Frances loves Mohammed Ali an example. The film is well made, the coutryside is very beautiful. The beautiful world of Carmel Winters. We can see the friendliness of the people who welcome them in their house and the little girl who gives her clothes to Frances. I don't like violence in the film, because two people fight strong by the idea is to show how strong you are. It is a lesson for girls and boys. I find the mother's death horrible, atrocious, all the more so in front of her daughter the son who tells her: « Mom, mom » and his mother tells him « Do not worry ». I find it terrible for a daughter to lose her mother. Otherwise the film was nice apart from violence.

Warning: Spoilers
This film has a beautiful story but the way it is filmed isn't realistic. There is a lot of times where the timeline isn't respected and everything isn't accurate. The end of the film could be also better than just a fight maybe the dream of Frances to be realized.

Fantastic !
violocosti15 May 2022
This Film directed by Camel Winters is a very beautiful Irish film. First I think if you are interested in Irish society, it is a perfect film for you. The fact that the film is Irish makes it original because there are not many famous films from this country, but this one won the FIPRESCI Discovery Prize and when we see the film we understand why. The film Stars Hazel Doupe, she is a great, young and pretty girl, she has talent and that has to be reconised. The film is about an original and historical subject. Frances is a girl from a traveller group in Ireland. She wants to protect and fight for her peaple, like her idol, Muhamed Ali. But her father is like a barrier in her goals because he wants to break her dreams. Frances is not the girl her father thinks she should be, but she is a heroine, and fights for her rights and her freedom. In this film we follow a strong girl, who has something to claim and to say. That is maybe the simple reason why I like it. Or maybe it is more than that.... ok this film is not the best one, but what is a very good film ? Here Frances makes sense to me because I can identify to her and that is the power of films, when fiction becomes reality.

A magical and incredible film of hope !!

Do not miss it !

Great Movie
salolodiva14 April 2022
The story is set in Ireland. It has been directed by Carmel Winters. This film is about a 15-year-old gypsy girl, named Frances, who is a fan of Mohammed Ali and who wants to become a great boxer like him. I enjoyed this film because the plot was touching for Frances is an endearingand determined girl with a difficult background. But the middle of the movie was quite long and boring ; however the ending was very interesting and touching because of the atmosphere which is on the tragic side of the situation. The acting is true to life and natural, I find it was very good acting. I liked the sound effects and music. I recommend this movie to people who like movies with action and sentimental story. Overall it's a very good movie to watch. You should have great time if you watch it for sure.

2017
twelve-house-books10 November 2020
In 2017, after 500-plus years, the Travellers of Ireland were finally recognized by the Republic as their own ethnic group. The films Snatch and Into the West are also about Travellers, but this masterpiece is the most realistic regarding how they lived in the 1960s. It's a bit different today, but not much (see above mentioned films, or take my word for it because I lived among Travellers in Ireland for a year). All that aside, if you've not yet been honored to see Hazel Doupe act, then this is your chance. Not only is she an exemplary artist, her natural beauty which deviates from the common female aesthetics of our own day like a persimmon differentiates itself from the common apple or orange is well worth viewing--and she is in nearly every scene. I only give a full 10 stars to superlative work, and this film is nothing less than perfect.

A great and interesting film
helguillon12 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story is about an Irish Traveller girl, Frances, who loves boxing and Muhammad Ali. She fights against society and she wants to protect her people.

I really liked the fact that it is about Irish Travellers. Before the film, I didn't know that in Ireland, there were Travellers. It was really interesting to know that.

I have also liked the story. A young woman, who fights for her rights, her liberty, against the society. The contrast between Frances and her brother was interesting. Both can't be themselves because of society because they are "boy" or "girl".

However, there is something I didn't really like. At the beginning, Frances's mother died. For me, the mother's death is unrealistic. A policeman pushed her and she died, okay there was blood but... you can't die in 3min when you are pushed down.

Also, at the end, Frances arrived like by magic on the beach and, obviously, at tthe right moment.

Frances' film actress, Hazel Doupe, has a very good acting, she is a really good actress.

Finally, it is a great and interesting film, with a good story but with some unrealistic scenes or it seems like unrealistic.

However, Irecommend it !

A touching story
chihaya-7456714 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Float like a butterfly is an Irish drama film. It speak about the traveller's community, relationships and girl power.

It's the great adventure of a teenager girl facing the world in her dream, which will take her to unknown destinations.

The Hazel Doupe's acting is natural and fortunately she's in the film because without her the drama would be boring.

The organisation of construction was sometimes not logical (SPOIL) : at the end when she comes back and fights the boy... However, there are many positive points : the music is excellent and helps acting.

The public lived the film and reacted to it. But I think the most interesting this is the inspiration of the film : the title refers to a quote from Mohammed Ali.

The film was inspired by a footballer and boxer named Katie Taylor and by a nomadic community.

So in this drama there is aesthetic, beautiful rural Ireland a realistic and touching story, a good cast, a girl who fights and wins in the hardest moments, society stereotypes and an evolution in the relationship between the father and Frances.

So don't miss it !

GREAT FILM !!!
alisonreynaud25 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film is about a young Irish girl. She is a gypsy. She loves Mohammad Ali because she loves boxing. She wants to meet Mohammad Ali but she can not because her family is poor. Her father was imprisoned for many years and her mother is dead.

My opinion about this film: the cast is good. Actors give us emotion. I put six stars because the film is beautiful but the story is long for verry little acting. I expected the girl to meet Mohammad Ali for her to fulfill her childhood dream. All in all, the film hs a beautiful history, that changes from Hollywood movies. It lachs suspense though.

A nice little movie to watch !
tschuppfo16 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"Float like a Butterfly" is the second feature of playwright and director Carmel Winters . The main character, Frances, was raised in Irish rural camps. Frances idolizes Muhammad Ali and aspires to become a boxer.

What I like in this film is the determination of Frances, who wants to defend her people both inside and outside the ring. Society wants to break her spirit but Frances believes in her dream and never leaves the fight. We can see that at the end when she fights against the policeman's son. She never gives up.

I also like the diversity of beautiful landscapes that we can see in the film. It is a way to discover rural Ireland in the 1990s.

Furthermore I loved the relationship between Frances and her father. At the beginning, he is her greatest ally but after prison, when he comes back, he is too downcast to believe in his daughter. Throughout the film, he has a bad behaviour with Frances, he is even a macho. He thinks that girls must not do boxing but just cooking for example, and that is terrible. But at the end, which is for me the best moment of the film, he believes in his daughter and lets her fight the policeman's son. This scene is really touching.

However, I don't like every element of the film, for example, I found that the progress of action is very slow. At the beginning the film just describes the gypsy community's life.

From my point of view there is a lack of action and special effects are absent during the fight.

Moreover, I think that the actress representing Frances could more convincingly play her part during the boxing scene.

Finally what I like most is the moral. In fact we understand how the gypsy community is treated.

In conclusion I recommend watching this film even if it cannot be considered as "the film of the year". It describes well the Irish society in the 1990s. But this film is not recommended for action lovers.

A good movie but not great
dems_dems11 April 2022
« Float Like A Butterfly » is a simple film, it does not bring anything new to the cinema world however, it is fun to watch it.

The film was directed by Carmel Winters, shot in Ireland with a dramatic story. The plot focuses on Frances, played by Hazel Doupe, who I really appreciated in this role even if I did not know her. The other part of the cast is also of high quality, we feel the different emotions well, in addition to the highlight of the film for me, the music, it is rich and well done.

We feel that the director enjoyed making the film with the actors in these really magnificent Irish settings but on a scale of zero to ten I give this film a six. Yes, just a six out of ten because even if I liked the casting, the cinematography and the soundtrack, having seen a lot of films, I am disappointed with the plot as well as by the end which are banal, predictable and far-fetched. However, even if everything is not perfect, the movie is still worth watching !

The story of a young gipsy girl in the 1960s ... A great pièce of film making !!
marilise_sll13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story is about a young gipsy girl, fanatic of Muhammed Ali and passionate about boxing . But she is a girl and her family don't agree with the fact that she can do boxing, for them it's a sport for boys... I liked this drama movie because it shows the difficulties to be a woman in 1960 , and the fact that the main character, Frances, lives in a family of Irish Travellers gives examples of the difficulties that a woman may encounter when she comes from a minority.

I also liked the fact that she is passionate about a sport and determined to do this sport despite her family's disagreement . What I liked the least was violence, for example when the father punches his daughter and when she gives him back the punch ; I found the plot absolutely surprising because it's a repetition of violence and I didn't like that . It's the same thing for the "beach battle " , I think that this moment is overated but it is essential to the movie because it reveals Frances's strength when it's to defend her community and prove that she is powerful . I like the acting game, it was very realistic and natural. But there is another negative point : the music and the sound effects for that type of movie.

On a scale of 0 to 10 I give this film an eight because it's a great piece of film making !
