During a podcast interview in 2018, actor and foodie B.J. Novak teased an idea he had for a chain-themed restaurant that would, contrary to the fundamental business model of chain restaurants, consist of a single brick-and-mortar location. It would be a nostalgia play, drawing on a collective wistfulness for the menu items and now-kitschy aesthetic elements that define iconic, ubiquitous American food chains like Taco Bell, Tgi Fridays, Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s and the like.
Two years of ideating later, by 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic (and the subsequent wave of outdoor dining) forced Novak and his team to pivot from their initial idea to start a sit-down restaurant in Los Angeles and instead launch temporary pop-ups in parking lots around the city in March 2021, with chef and Chain co-founder Tim Hollingsworth in charge of the rotating menu and kitchen. Since then, Chain has undergone a series of further evolutions. In its current iteration,...

The streamers, led by Netflix, moved into the non-scripted entertainment space in a serious way about five years ago.
This coupled with the fact that the broadcast networks were still having disproportionate success with unscripted shows, opened plenty of opportunities for producers to create new entertainment formats.
Enter former MasterChef showrunner Robin Ashbrook and Yasmin Shackleton, also an exec producer on the Fox cooking show, who launched The Old School, an independent production company in 2018 with Netflix’s The Final Table, the streamer’s first significant move into the food space.
Since then, the pair have worked with the likes of Helen Mirren, Tan France, Alexa Chung and Gigi Hadid on a number of shiny floor entertainment shows.
They are now gearing up for the premiere of the second season of Netflix’s Next In Fashion, a design competition series with Hadid taking over from Chung and joined by the likes of Hailey Bieber,...

I’m going to start this review with a question. Imagine is a summers evening (let’s say a Friday evening) and you fancying some food but also want to spend some social time with friends … what is the first thing that comes to your mind? I’ll tell you what, it’s a barbecue! There is nothing better than sitting outside and enjoy some burgers, sausages and chicken straight from the grill. I am honestly the biggest fan of BBQ cooking around and so a show that explores renowned chefs who are forerunners in the BBQ community is absolutely a show I would love.
Even though I am a fan of BBQ cooking, my exposure to the art has been solely based on outside grills or cheap disposable BBQ in a field but Chef’s Table: BBQ has really pushed my knowledge of the cooking technique and now I’m an even bigger fan!

Exclusive: Netflix has planted the seeds for The Big Flower Fight (w/t) – a major new competition format rooted in the UK.
The eight-part series has sprouted from ITV Studios-owned Multistory Media. It comes as Netflix continues to grow out its non-scripted library and builds on hit competition originals including Nailed It! and The Final Table.
The series will see ten duos, including florists, sculptors and garden designers, put to the test as they compete in a series of themed challenges to create large-scale flower installations.
Each episode will test a different set of creative and practical skills, from floristry to carpentry and landscaping. The materials each pair can use to create their installation will vary week-by-week, and participants will be encouraged to think about plants which give back to the environment – such as pollinating, insect-friendly species. One team will be eliminated each week as the competition intensifies, leaving...

The 2019 Emmy rule book revealed that the “Outstanding Reality-Competition Program” category is now called “Outstanding Competition Program,” marking the highest-level renaming since “Miniseries” reverted to “Limited Series” in 2015. Three “Reality-Competition” Creative Arts races are being simplified accordingly.
PREDICTthe Emmy Award nominees for 2019 in 16 categories.
The TV academy differentiated competition programs from nonfiction programming in 2003 with the introduction of the “Outstanding Reality/Competition Program” category, which split into the standalone “Outstanding Reality Program” and “Outstanding Reality-Competition Program” categories the following year. “The Amazing Race” won both inaugural awards — and eight since then. This will be the first year after 16 consecutive nominations that “The Amazing Race” will not be nominated, as it is taking an extended hiatus and will not qualify for 2019 Emmy eligibility.
“The Amazing Race” typically airs two seasons per year, in the spring and fall, but the 30th cycle became the first cycle to air in January or February,...

Emmy hopefuls, beware: there’s a comedy hitman hiding in your midst.
Bill Hader accepted the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series on Saturday night for HBO’s “Barry” and his direction of the series’ pilot episode “Chapter One: Make Your Mark.” Hader’s win comes as something of a surprise after Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” made mincemeat of much of its competition at recent awards outings, including Amy Sherman-Palladino’s triumph over Hader in the comedy director category at the Emmy Awards.
HBO had significant wins throughout the ceremony, striking a blow to its non-traditional counterparts, with Netflix taking home the only prize for a streaming service, for Reality Programs direction on “The Final Table.”

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. There’s significant overlap between the two voting groups, and the DGA winner tends to be similarly awarded by the Academy — their selections have diverged only seven times since 1949. Cuarón previously won the award for “Gravity,” for which he also won the Oscar.
Here’s the full list of winners:
Feature Film
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”

Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
Adam McKay, “Vice”

Alfonso Cuarón has been named the best director of 2018 for “Roma” at the 71st Annual Directors Guild Awards, which were handed out on Saturday night in Hollywood.
The win reinforces Cuarón’s position as a strong favorite to win the Academy Award for Best Director, and marks the fifth time in the last six years that one of a close-knit group of three Mexican-born directors has won the DGA Award. Cuarón also won for “Gravity,” while his close friends Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro have also won in that stretch, Iñárritu for “Birdman” and “The Revenant” and del Toro for “The Shape of Water.”
The win for Cuarón and “Roma” is the most significant guild award ever won by Netflix, which backed the director’s black-and-white, Spanish language memory piece. It is the second foreign-language film to win the DGA feature-film award, after Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger,...

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
On the telefilm/limited series side, Barry Levinson made it a lucky 13 DGA nominations with his bid for “Paterno.” He faces off against Cary Joji Fukunaga...

The Director’s Guild of America gave its stamp of approval to a number of actors-turned-directors Monday afternoon, nominating a slew of famous faces for its 2019 DGA Awards.
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”), and Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”) all landed their first DGA nominations, while Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) scored his second nomination for the series.
“Atlanta” was one of a few projects scoring multiple nominations, as Hiro Murai was also selected for his work on “Teddy Perkins” (IndieWire’s pick for the best TV episode of 2019). Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino were both nominated for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and three directors were honored from “A Series of Unfortunate Events”: Barry Sonnenfeld, Bo Welch, and Allan Arkush were all chosen in the Children’s Programs category.

It’s an established M.O. for Netflix: Identify genres and formats that “belong” to other networks, and begin slow and steady encroachment. “The Final Table” is a clear answer to Bravo’s “Top Chef,” while docu-series “Dogs” would have gone to Animal Planet in a different life.

Four Christmas-themed, Netflix Original love stories will be released between Halloween and New Year’s, and the crown jewel may be “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding” — a sequel borne of the breakout popularity of last year’s “A Christmas Prince.” While it’s possible that this informal infringement may have Hallmark execs shaken like a snow globe, they also may be content knowing that the Christmas Movie Industrial Complex is harder than it looks.

In this time of division, one thing that most people can agree on is the value of a good pet story. Drawing from tales of furry companions all over the globe, Netflix’s new doc series “Dogs” is looking to warm audiences’ hearts just in time for the end of fall.
Each episode of the series chronicles a separate true story about the relationship between humans and the dogs in their life. As the newest trailer shows, these chapters span four different continents, spanning from Syria to Japan. Some focus on dogs who have effectively become children for families in need, some focus on getting beloved companions out of war zones, and others center on the way that dogs can help make life easier for people with disabilities.
