- A military veteran hunts the men who kidnapped her son.
- An ex-military specialist Clair Hamilton (Gina Carano) receives a big inheritance from her late father upon his death. Clair had only returned home upon her father's funeral. Clair was away on military missions and hence never connected very closely with her son Charlie, who was closer to his deceased grandfather. One day, Clair returned home to find Charlie kidnapped.
She sets up a meeting with the kidnappers to hand over the ransom money. She brings a bag of money as ransom for Charlie. At the exchange Clair wanted to see her son Charlie, but the kidnappers wanted to see the money first. Clair is double-crossed by the kidnappers as when she hands over the money, they prepare to shoot her down. Clair had hidden her own gun at the exchange venue, leading to a shootout. Virgil (Brock Morgan), one of the kidnappers is shot by Clair at the money exchange site, as 2 others Nolan (Chad Riley) and Larsen (Brendan Fehr) manage to escape in their car.
Clair follows Nolan and Larsen in her car and rear ends them. She also shoots at their car, eventually managing to kill Nolan with a head-shot. In the process, Clair loses control of her car, and it overturns on slippery ice. Larsen manages to run away with the money, but Clair emerges from her car and shoots Larsen in the leg. Clair's car explodes when the leaking fuel catches fire, which allows Larsen to run away even with his injured leg.
Rather than pay for her son's return, Clair decides to abduct the surviving kidnapper and force him to lead her to her son Charlie (Anton Gillis-Adelman). Clair pursues Larsen through the frozen countryside, following his blood trail in the snow. Clair catches up with Larsen on top of a frozen lake.
Clair falls through the ice into the lake water while beating up Larsen, but Larsen saves Clair from drowning. Larsen pulls her out because he was not planning to kill anyone and did not know about the plans to double-cross her.
Clair has a peaceful encounter with a black wolf while recovering, then catches up with Larsen and forces him at gunpoint to take her to the leader of the kidnappers, Father (Richard Dreyfuss), a man who is angry at Clair's deceased father for closing a mill and leaving money owed to him. Father has kept Charlie in a camp high up in the mountains which makes it nearly impossible to escape. But it's also far enough that the kidnapper trio would have taken days to reach there, giving Clair a window of opportunity to attack them with an element of surprise.
Charlie was kept in a camp, from which he tries to escape when the guards are asleep. Unfortunately, Charlie is cornered by a wolf, and Father intervenes to shoot the wolf, before it attacked Charlie. As they near the hideout in the snowy forest Clair and Larsen are fired upon by Phillip (Joshua Murdoch), whom she outwits when wolves attack and kill him. Larsen says that the men working for Father are just doing what they were told to do, as they didn't know any better. Larsen takes Clair to the camp, only to find that Father had moved camps with Charlie.
Clair finds that the kidnappers have moved on to a lodge on the other side of the mountain to await a hand-off to sell off the boy to a buyer. Larsen agrees to take Clair to a lodge which is a 10-hour hike away if she allows him to cremate Phillip.
On the way Larsen tells the story of how Father is a hated figure. He lends money at ruinous rates and then collects brutally. In his case, he collected Larsen and his mom as payment and kept Larsen's mom as his sex slave. She escaped a few years later, leaving Larsen alone to grow up with Father.
Clair tells Larsen that with Charlie, Father is not looking for money, but for revenge on his grandfather who died owing him money. Father & Seth (Stew McLean) reach the lodge with Charlie and hook up with Hobbs (Sydelle Noel). Father knows that something has gone wrong and that they are not getting the money. Hobbs is not ready to abandon Larsen and the others just yet.
At the lodge Clair attempts to exchange the money and Larsen for Charlie. Father pulls out a concealed gun and shoots at Charlie, but Larsen jumps in front of the bullet and is shot in the back. Clair shoots Father and the other kidnappers, then flees on a snowmobile pursued by the uninjured kidnapper Hobbs whose metal knife stopped the bullet Clair shot at her. Clair crashes her snowmobile and gets into a knife fight with Hobbs but is pushed over the edge of a waterfall and Charlie is captured again.
Clair climbs out of the river and is guided into the forest by three wolves. She returns to the lodge, kills the injured kidnapper with a hatchet, and confronts Father, who is inside torturing Larsen with a red-hot fireplace poker while confessing that he killed Larsen's mother after she left him.
Charlie returns with Hobbs and Clair throws a knife into her throat. Larsen attacks Father but Father shoots him then turns the gun on Charlie as Clair leaps at Father and pushes him out a window. Clair thanks Larsen before he dies, then she climbs on a snowmobile and exchanges glances with the black wolf as it approaches before she escapes with Charlie. Father rises out of the snow as a pack of wolves descends on him and tears him apart.
Three months later, in the spring, Clair and Charlie are hiking a path on the mountain when she sees the black wolf again and smiles.
