We lost an entire era of Pixar to streaming and apathy
Image
Soul, Luca and Turning Red have all largely been buried on Disney+, but why? As always, we’ve had some thoughts.

Pixar has long been at the forefront of American mainstream animation. The studio ushered in the era of CG animation with its debut feature Toy Story, intelligently explored darker themes of loss in Up, and helped all of us make sense of the messy emotions in our heads with Inside Out. Not to mention, its trophy cabinet must be buckling under the weight of all of its awards.

Of course, not all of its films have been hits. Lightyear, a Toy Story spin-off, missed the mark, and the Cars franchise remains, well, ordinary. Still, Pixar has always been at its best when focusing on original films, and at a point where blockbusters were dominated by sequels and franchises, Pixar was putting often breathtakingly original movies through the Hollywood system.

The Worst Netflix Original Horror Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
For the horror heads among us, perusing a streamer's genre page can be a goldmine of camp opportunities or disturbing folk horror to keep us up at night, but it can also be home to some of the most tedious stories put to film. Whether it's an ill-advised continuation of a franchise or an adaptation in the wrong hands, even the mighty Netflix isn't immune to acquiring, producing, and/or distributing some stinkers. In fact, they tend to excel at it.

While Rotten Tomatoes isn't the be-all and end-all of movie criticism (and it almost seems to be trying to discredit it more and more), it can provide a quick temperature check to a movie's well being -- a helpful measure for all of us when considering how we want to spend our time rotting away on the couch. Mileage can vary on how much to trust the aggregated rating of a bunch of critics,...

25 Worst Netflix Original Horror Movies
Image
Here are some of the worst horror movies on Netflix, based on their Rotten Tomatoes scores: The Open House (2018) - 7% (critics) and 8% (audience) Secret Obsession (2019) - 28% (critics) and 16% (audience)

Horror movies tend to get a bad rap and don't often reach critical acclaim and that's the case for the worst horror movies on Netflix. Fans of the genre typically know better than to judge a film based on its critical reception like when critics initially balked at horror movies that became classics like John Carpenter's The Thing. Yet, critics and viewers mostly agree that much of it falls short when it comes to Netflix's original horror content.

It's always fun seeing what new original horror movies Netflix is releasing, but some of the worst have plots that feel clichd and characters that don't feel compelling. Some of these films venture into so-bad-it's-good territory, as purposely watching critically panned horror...

Dylan Minnette, Star of ’13 Reasons Why,’ Explains Why He Stopped Acting
Image
You might not recognize the name immediately, but Dylan Minnette is someone whose face you will definitely remember. Aside from starring in 13 Reasons Why as Clay Jensen, Minnette has appeared in numerous television series in guest roles, such as Lost, Awake, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, Prison Break, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Aside from that, he also appeared in the horror movie Let Me In (2010), the thriller film Prisoners (2013), the family comedy film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014), the family fantasy film Goosebumps (2015), and the horror films Don’t Breathe (2016), The Open House (2018) and Scream (2022).

But, if you’ve been attentive, you might have noticed that Minnette has not been on the screen for some time now, and it is true – the young actor quit acting in 2022 and has been focusing on his musical career with his rock band Wallows since then.

Minnette recently appeared on the Zach Sang Show,...

Lulu Wilson in The Wrath of Becky (2023)
‘The Wrath of Becky’ Heads Home to Digital This Friday
Lulu Wilson in The Wrath of Becky (2023)
After receiving a limited theatrical release just last month, Bloody Disgusting has learned today that sequel The Wrath of Becky will be heading home later this week.

The Wrath of Becky hits Digital outlets – rental & purchase – on Friday, June 16!

Meagan wrote in her review of The Wrath of Becky for Bd, “Armed with John Wick-like motivation, Becky plunges into a vengeful quest that provokes more violence, bloodletting, and a higher body count. This time a more well-rounded sense of humor offsets her wrath.”

In the film, “Two years after she escaped a violent attack on her family, Becky attempts to rebuild her life in the care of an older woman – a kindred spirit named Elena. But when a group known as the “Noble Men” break into their home, attack them, and take her beloved dog, Diego, Becky must return to her old ways to protect herself and her loved ones.

‘The Wrath of Becky’ Review: Teenage Rage Finds a Far-Right Target in a Serviceable Sequel
Image
Released to theaters in the theatrical dog days of mid-2020, Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s “Becky” became a home-formats hit, its gleefully tasteless home-invasion thrills a guilty-pleasure tonic for Covid captives going a bit stir-crazy. Now Lulu Wilson is back as that title character, more or less the sole survivor of her prior screen outing. You can be sure in “The Wrath of Becky” that age hasn’t dulled her pissed-off homicidal verve, and that fate will surely provide another crop of ne’er-do-wells to tempt its exercise.

However, a different writing-directing duo is in charge this time, Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote. Their efforts generate rewards that are somewhat diminished, if still diverting. Quiver is releases this SXSW-premiered sequel to U.S. theaters, with home-formats dates as yet unannounced.

Three years ago, Becky was a 13-year-old hopping mad over not just her mother’s recent cancer demise, but...

The Wrath of Becky Star Lulu Wilson Reveals That a Trilogy is Being Planned
Image
Becky lead Lulu Wilson has hinted a third outing in the action thriller franchise following the release of the upcoming sequel, The Wrath of Becky. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Wilson teased a trilogy for her wonderfully warped young hero, playing it coy when asked if there were any plans for further adventures.

"I don't know how much I can say about this but, like, keep your hopes up. There could be something on the way."

While Wilson carefully hints at a Becky threequel, a further conversation with her co-star Kate Siegel pretty much confirms that Becky 3 is now happening.

"I'm not great at keeping in touch with anyone, but we had dinner the other night and it was amazing. Like Kate is, we're very similar people and she's such a talented actress. It was really exciting to work with her. Hoping that she'll make an appearance in the third. But she's fantastic.

ABC Renews ‘Abbott Elementary’ for Season 2
Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, William Stanford Davis, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, Quinta Brunson, and Janelle James in Abbott Elementary (2021)
“Abbott Elementary” is returning for another term (aka season). ABC has renewed the show for a second season.

Principal Ava Coleman, the character played by Janelle James, announced the news in a note to students on Monday, which was addressed to “Faculty and Students (aka My Fans).”

“The camera crew I hired to showcase all that I’ve made happen at our beautiful school thinks I’m a star. I mean, are we surprised? No, we’re not. With that said, it is with great pleasure that I share they’ll be returning for the 2022-2023 school year! That’s right — Abbott Elementary Season 2 is coming to a screen near you,” the note read.

Freshman Comedy Sensation ‘Abbott Elementary’ Renewed for Season 2 by ABC
Image
ABC’s breakout comedy hit “Abbott Elementary” will be back for another school year. The Alphabet net confirmed on Monday that the critically acclaimed workplace laffer, from Warner Bros. TV and 20th Television, has been renewed for the second grade, a.k.a. Season 2.

Quinta Brunson created and stars in “Abbott Elementary,” which takes place in a Philadelphia public school and focuses on a group of educators — with different levels of experience and optimism, but all with the determination to help their students.

The renewal was revealed in tongue-in-cheek fashion via a “memo” from “Abbott Elementary” principal Ava Coleman (played by Janelle James), the self-centered and often inappropriate (and slightly tone-deaf) school leader who oversees the show’s dedicated — and overworked — teachers. See below:

Brunson plays Janine Teagues; the cast also includes Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter...

‘Abbott Elementary’ Renewed For Season 2 By ABC
Image
Class will remain in session at Abbott Elementary. ABC has given an early Season 2 renewal to Quinta Brunson’s breakout comedy series.

In a move echoing the special edition of Lady Whistledown’s Society Paper that announced the Season 2 pickup of Bridgerton, Principal Ava Coleman (played on the show by Janelle James) unveiled the renewal news in a note to “Faculty and Students (aka My Fans”). You can read it below.

Abbott Elementary’s renewal comes as little surprise as the workplace comedy has quickly established itself as a ratings and social media standout for ABC. The half-hour, created, written and starring Brunson, is ABC’s No. 1 new comedy in two years in adults 18-49, and the season’s No. 1 comedy in adults 18-49, in a tie with CBS’ Ghosts, which also has received an early Season 2 renewal.

Dewil and Baur, who will produce the movie, already worked together on the action thriller “Vehicle 19,” starring the late Paul Walker, and the psychological thriller “The Immaculate Room,” starring Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth and Ashley Greene Khoury, which won best picture and best male actor at the Mammoth Film Festival recently.

Dewil’s most recent movie project is thriller “Collide,” starring Ryan Phillippe, Kat Graham and Jim Gaffigan, which recently wrapped production. Baur is an exec producer on the movie.

“Open House” centers on a couple out house hunting, who get stuck inside a show house with a strange realtor.

The production is in the process of casting, and is looking to announce the cast within the coming weeks.

How Kate Herron Went From Short Films to ‘Loki’ Director
Image
Though Marvel has a solid track record of spotting early talent, Kate Herron admits that her selection to direct and EP the first season of “Loki” surprised even her. “I knew I was a wild card,” says Herron. “I knew I wasn’t going to be the most experienced person in the room, but I could be the most passionate. I got my agents to call them every day until Marvel was finally like, ‘Fine, bring her in.’ I just tried to give them a big download of my brain and hoped they would be into it. And they were, and I’m forever grateful to them, because it has changed my life.”

In addition to her passion, what Herron had going for her was an impressive group of short films that showed her unique style and voice. The films, which did well on the festival circuit, helped her secure her first TV directing gigs,...

Matt Angel
Netflix’s “Netflix and Chills” Halloween lineup winds down with a new thriller by directors Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote (The Open House). Despite its name and suggestion, Hypnotic eschews any mind games and instead opts for a lean, straightforward thriller. It moves at a snappy pace, which is good considering this lean thriller is also slight on suspense or […]...

Peacock Streaming Lineup: What’s Coming to Comcast Now, and What’s Coming Later
Mariska Hargitay in New York - Unité spéciale (1999)
Comcast and NBCUniversal are pushing Peacock out of the nest starting Wednesday, April 15, promising to unfurl a rich plume of 15,000-plus hours of streaming content, first for the cable giant’s own TV and internet customers.

Peacock is then slated to be available across the U.S. on July 15 — while NBCU is mulling the possibility of moving that up sooner — in various three tiers across mobile, web and connected-tv devices: paid with ads ($4.99 monthly); paid with no ads ($9.99 monthly); and completely free with ads with a truncated content lineup. With the national launch, Comcast (and Cox) subscribers also will have the option to get an ad-free version of the service for an additional $5 per month.

So what’s on the menu? Peacock will include live and on-demand content across current and past TV shows, movies, news, and late night programming, with some live sports once they resume post-pandemic. Most of...

Michael C. Hall
Michael C. Hall to Star in ‘Thom Pain (based on nothing)’
Michael C. Hall
Michael C. Hall will return to the stage playing the title role in “Thom Pain (based on nothing).” The one-man show marks the “Dexter” star’s first appearance since headlining “Lazarus,” the trippy Ivo van Hove adaptation of “The Man Who Fell to Earth” that ran in New York and London in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

“Thom Pain (based on nothing)” is written by Drama Desk Award-winning playwright Will Eno ( and directed by Obie Award-winner Oliver Butler (“The Open House”). First performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2004 and nominated for a 2005 Pulitzer Prize after an Off-Broadway run, the play is a discursive monologue that tackles love, loss, magic, and bee stings. It runs Oct. 23 – Nov. 25, 2018 at the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center in New York City.

It’s a reunion of sorts between actor and playwright. Hall previously starred in Eno’s Broadway production of “The Realistic Joneses” opposite Toni Collette,...

Netflix’s The Ritual Trailer Turns A Nature Hike Into A Nightmare
Netflix offers up a trailer and release date for the feature film adaptation of Adam Nevill’s The Ritual, and the results are as good a reminder as any for hapless hikers to steer clear of the woods when they look this creepy. Netflix is certainly no stranger to the horror game (especially when it comes to raising subscription prices), as the streaming giant has recently brought Gerald’s Game, 1922, Death Note, and The Open House to its line-up, and the newest addition looks like it’s going to bring quite the gory nightmare to that list.

17 Netflix Original Movies Coming in 2018
Netflix announced late last year that they have no less than 80 new projects in the pipeline for release this year, and a huge amount of those will be original movies. It's hard enough keeping up with everything at the multiplex, but now it's getting even harder to discover which, of the many movies, we need to watch on Netflix streaming. Don't worry. We have you covered.

Love Netflix? Hate Netflix? You can't argue that they are an entertainment juggernaut. It would be enough if they were simply the company who made streaming viable. However, what they have become as a production/distribution powerhouse just about thwarts all of that. Making this even more impressive is the litany of content that Netflix continues to produce. Whether it is the animal conscious Okja, or the Training Day meets Alienation mash-up Bright, or the litany of documentary or TV shows (Orange Is the New Black,...
