Not the usual.
akhil0271 January 2020
Iblis is totally different from almost every other malayalam movies we've seen. It takes you to this whole other world where people don't get sad when someone dies because deaths happen very often there that it has become a routine thing in their life. They could've made it better. The movie drags at some places. But I laughed a lot. If you love different kinds of movies, this one is for you. Otherwise stay away.

Molecule Review: Iblis (4 Stars)
nairtejas10 August 2019
Iblis (Devil) is a clever fantasy romance with a colorful production setup and technical brilliance. It attempts to bridge the gap between life and death while providing a critique of the way humans live while trying to avoid death. Why it turns into a snoozefest can be attributed to the loose screenplay and a lackluster style of storytelling with not much weightage given to visuals despite their high magnitude in almost all the frames of this experimental cinema. If you enjoy romance and surrealist experiences, give the film some time and patience to construct itself and it will be rewarding. TN.

Iblis - A movie with a floating feeling...
harelives23 March 2020
I started watching this without knowing anything about it. For the first quarter hours, I was hoping for it to go for a steady direction but I didn't find it. There was this distance avoiding me from connecting with the characters. But then slowly it pulled me in and fixed me with the magical storytelling which I know Malayalis are rarely failed at.

The camera direction is excellent and that's one of the key features you are gonna love. The music of clarinet and accordion makes your mood soothing with the flow of the movie.

This has a lot of magic or magical realism as they call it and the director has carefully kept the tone and the phase of the movie consistent without losing and ends.

The melancholic feeling of the movie along with the camera shots and colours take you to another level and fix you there floating till the end.

Asif, Lal, Madonna and other supporting actors are doing a really great job. There were moments I couldn't believe how Asif has transformed himself in to the character. Madona is amazing as always though her character is not much explored.

This also reminded the Pixar movie Coco (2017) because it has the same theory about the dead people. Yes, Iblis is about death and it successfully maintains the theory consistent. That's why it is perfect in itself .

I must say this is not everyone's cup of tea. But for those who love this type of tea should never let this wonderful movie slip away. I've watched another Malayalam movie with the same tone. It's Charlie (2015) and I strongly recommend it for anyone if you have loved Iblis.

Waste of time and effort. When I saw Asif Ali and Lal I smelled a disaster but to such an extent. Poor script and poor direction.

A really good fantasy movie
Dantheman1313 June 2020
This movie is so under rated. The characters, setting, plot, music and everything else is very unique and it's such a rare piece in our industry. This is one of the best malayalam fantasy films. If you watch it without any expectations like I did, this will be a treat for you.

One of the best Malayalam movie with Magical Realism at its best.
shinu-shajahan7912 August 2019
Just see it. Feel it. Director Rohith VS deserves much more appreciation. He is the best in this genre. Though "Amen" also deals with same genre but everything related to it was reserved for the climax or last 3 mins. But with "Iblis", from start to finish, the director takes us to a well knit world of wonders. Costumes & Cinematography also deserve claps.

MUST WATCH.

AN UNAPPRECIATED PIECE OF GEM
azemillancy9 May 2023
A refreshing experience the film puts forward to the viewer. A wonderful experiment arose in the mind of Rohith, the director. These types of films are what could push the level of art that will be churned out every year in the cinema industry. It doesn't matter if the film is a flop or a success, if the film has in it something fresh and delightful to offer to the viewer, then that's more than enough. But at most times, the audience who are accustomed only to a certain type of cliche that gets them the entertainment they want, they won't find out-of-the-box experiments interesting.

But there are other types of film watchers. Those who keep an interest in cinema that transcends mere entertainment, or the kind of entertainment commercial cinema usually offers, it's them who will find this film a piece of gem.

The film is based on the story of Vyshakhan and Fidaa, who lives on a fictional island that's right opposite to an actual society in many aspects. A very strange place. The most significant of all the strangeness is the lack of sorrow people usually have when someone dies. And a subtly shown aspect, which at many times becomes thoroughly direct and explicit, is the absence of conventional norms practised by society and religion. Throughout the film, life and death are projected, as a discourse that's expressed in subtle language. The philosophy the makers try to convey is simple and is explicitly revealed in the end.

The viewer can smoothly traverse through every scene and frame. Vyshakhan's love for Fidaa and his adventures for attaining her love is brilliantly picturized through fantastical imagery that brings much delight to the viewer's eyes. A very important aspect of the film is its emphasis on sweets. Fidaa is from a home that's engaged in the sweets business. The expression of Vyshakhan's love is partly done through "sweets". The flavour and taste of sweets are absorbed by the camera and music. A poetic blend that implicitly displays the symbolic connection between sweets, love, and from a broader perspective, life. The film's language is heavily composed of childishness, which shapes the fantasy. It is shown in a wide scale of elements, such as icons, imagery, music, the basic plot etc. And that itself is the aesthetic of the film which is unknown to Malayalam cinema.

The writing acts as the foundation for the visual fantasy that's displayed in the film. Sameer Abdul's development of the plot and some of the dialogues that aid the storytelling captures the freshness and eccentricity of Rohith's story.

The viewer can travel into another world once the film starts. Enjoy every frame with much delight, and feel the sweetness of Fidaa and Vyshakhan's love, it's adventure and philosophy.

Magic for your soul!!

I regret not watching it for this long, what a film!

Rohith VS is some serious talent, his first film Adventures of Omanakuttan was one of a kind, then this and now he just released his third film Kala which is also something else. I lost myself watching this film felt like waking up from a dream after 2 hours. Although i must warn you, its not for everyone.

Such a creatively worked out storyline. The movie has its out of the box elements and the color to each frames are just fabulous. The director has delivered yet another genius work like his other movies. This film deserves more appreciation i guess .

Such a creatively worked out story line. Should have deserved better appreciation. We should start accepting such movies. Some scenes are brilliantly worked out especially the 2nd half. Think out of the box kind of movie..
