Could've been better
a_filmcritter29 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
99 Songs was such a let down... the storyline had sooo much potential but I'm not sure what happened to it (especially in the second half when he goes to get inspiration for his songs). It kind of felt all over the place.

The only things I really enjoyed were the cinematography, most of the songs, and the film score - they were very beautifully composed by AR Rahman.

A Cinematic Experience
arundathi22 May 2021
I truly wish I could have seen this movie in theaters.

The music was amazing, especially "Jwalamukhi" and "O Aashiqa".

The story was simple but the music and characters were crafted in a way to bring flow to the story.

Overall, a sensual experience of mixed emotions.

Movie Wasn't On Song Throughout.
harishmadireddi2 May 2021
I was actually shocked by the imdb rating and thank god I haven't watched this by the assurance of that rating, In that way I am less upset for watching this. There is nothing to larger part of the extent to be engaged with point. The approach of the film from the sounding of ARR(good) to cinematography(very imrpessive) to art direction(fresh and artistic) were so unique but the screenplay was routine and the flashback of heros childhood was obvious. The point was interesting until the conflict between hero and heroines father but there after its like an same old concept like Challenge (a telugu movie of chiranjeevi) and there wasnt any backing up by gripping screenplay as well. However, the last 15minutes, the way the main concept of the film has been linked to politics etc was very good. Its like you can watch first 20minutes and last 20minutes and you will be left with some satisfaction, watching it completely gives you that middle part of 1hr with routine stuff and emotions. Its an ok movie and definitely not worth of almost 9 IMDB Rating.

AR Rahman's soulful music and honest performance made it a decent watch
cseabhi23 May 2021
I was having a lot of expectations from the movie, as this was AR Rahman's movie. It might have not met all my expectations but though it was a decent watch.

The movie plot revolves around Jai(Ehan Bhat) who has only two priority, Music and his love Sophie. His girlfriend's rich father Sanjay Singhania(Ranjit Barot) challenges him to compose 100 songs and only after then he is allowed to marry Sophie. Jai with hi friend sets out on a journey to Shillong to write songs but he gets attracted to a Jazz singer Sheela(Lisa Ray) and then a betryal and an accident changes Jai life.

The movie primary focus should be on music and here AR Rahman has done a really good job by providing good music in abundance, be it a Jazz song or a classical note. But somehow I personally feel the music does not connected with the story that well.

Maybe the story was a little complex. There were so many things going on with story, the visual treatments, the dark side of the story, but it was all not very convincing. The writing could have been much better. Director Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy tried to tell the story in a sensitive way but not succeeded.

Expectations were there from a musical genius like Rahman, he impressed also but only in couple of songs. Overall music was good but not what one would expect from Rahman.

Ehan Bhat looks good and tries his best to give an honest performance. For the most part of the movie he really delivers a good performance. Edilsy Vargas looked decent and delivered a nice performance.

Overall, Rahman could have added some more quality songs. Though couple of songs in the movie are actually nice but there isn't any song which will be with you for a long time.

Utterly disappointed
veenagyanchandani24 May 2021
Utterly disappointed with the movie. Acting wise the movie was bad but i was disappointed with the music also. The filmmaker may have thought that it was kind of philosophical and creative but actually it was more of a childish play.

An elegant musical!
toby_philips21 May 2021
A feel good musical, blended with mixed emotions, genres, and technology. And a tailor made script so as to befit the high and lower octaves plying the audience through a montages of musical genres depicting each emotion such as Humnawa (western classical) portrays a sofasticated blend of music with 5th generation tech world of AI, Nayi Nayi (rock) represents cheers of youthfulness, Sofia (soft rock) represents love, Sai (soul) takes us through the wings of devotion, o meri Chand (another soul) reminds us of a mother's lullaby, jwalamukhi (epic rock) underscores rage, stubbornness, and ones determination, o ashiqa (another epic rock) marks the void created by motherhood and Soja (jazz) portrays shades of desire, and enigma. This way the situations that takes us through out the movie are interposed in such a way to acquaint the audience through a coaster of musical genres nothing much on note as the story is just old wine Ina new bottle. However there are some take away such as individual performances from Ehan, Lisa, Ranjit Barot, Edilsy, Rahul Ram, Ashwat, and Tenzing. The storyline is just mediocre but the music is indeed refreshing, elegant, diverse, and riveting. On the whole it's worth a one time watch, but the music is resonant.

Logic less melodrama
arindamchoudhury25 May 2021
The story has no logic. Things happen randomly.

It could have been a great movie about an artist in search of inspiration. But what we get is a hotchpotch of the cliched plots.

Even the cinematography was confusing. Sometimes it felt like I am watching a horror movie.

Loses the flow. But a great attempt
sharbeen22 May 2021
I enjoyed this movie for 2 things. Lovely cinematography and music.

I hated the direction. It felt like he doesn't know how to get it done right. The editing was awful as well. Some things felt out of place.

Some of the actors were good but I wouldn't say brilliant. But the girls father (Ranjith) was the worst of all.

I'm not saying this is a bad movie. But these bits really irritated me that being a die hard fan of a r rahman it didn't turn out how I wish it should've turned out.

To be honest didn't like this movie...
vikramvi21 May 2021
Nothing in this movie, poor storyline, poor execution if it is not a AR Rahman product this one doesn't get anything. Overrated movie, fan's simply giving high rating which doesn't deserve one.

Loopy music with a loopy screenplay
mukundan-raman23 May 2021
A tune goes forward behind a scene which abruptly continues from a suspense. We dont know why that happened, 5-10 minutes later the reason for the event unfolds and people who keenly listen to the music can only understand that the same melody plays with a different orchestration. This trend is spread over all through the movie. The movie has many such occasions. Dont ask me where. Watch again if you didnt listen. It is a brilliant movie.

I would rate one mark lesser than 10 for having too many such loops.

In general, people who notice your own life can feel, life takes us back and forth, it is not always linear, such is this beautiful movie and the music that keeps flowing. Ebbs and bounds. Life is a musical, me being a pass-and-fail musician.

An interesting depiction of the journey of an artist with some soulful music, but unlike his music career A.R.Rahman is not off to a winning start here.
Perspicuity12 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film had me intrigued from the day it was announced simply because A. R. Rahman was not only the composer but also the story writer as well as the producer of the film. After making us wait for a painfully long period of more than seven years, when the movie finally came out, it failed to meet the expectations I had from it. Of course, it's completely normal for your first film to not be a masterpiece, but with A. R. Rahman we generally set the bar of expectations rather high.

Dialogues and lyrics of this film are not of the highest standard, and it almost feels like they were translated into Hindi. Interestingly the movie delivers beautifully through its silent moments, making you believe that there was definitely a good vision but it couldn't translate properly on screen. The movie takes a rather convoluted turn mid-way with a sub-plot about drugs just to send the lead character at a certain place, but that entire story felt like a completely different movie, because it came out of nowhere. It would have been better if that subplot was integrated in a much more organic way or some other subplot was used instead.

The story of the film is not new as such apart from the final thirty minutes but you don't feel bored initially because you are invested in the characters. The casting team did a good job in finalizing Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas, for the roles of Jai and Sophia. Both Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas have an amazing screen presence and have given a pretty good performance considering it was their debut film. I could not understand as to why Sophia played by Edilsy Vargas was turned mute in the movie, she could have added so much to her character if she had a voice. Although, Edilsy looked extremely gorgeous throughout the film, she wasn't just a pretty face strolling around in the movie; her facial expressions and body language gave a clear indication that she understands the art. Foreign actresses are selected in Indian movies purely on the basis of their looks and dancing skills, example being Katrina Kaif who has been in the industry for almost two decades but still has no expressions on her face, that should give an idea about how good the selection of Edilsy Vargas was, because not only does she look like a dream but can also act quite well. If offered the right guidance and opportunities, both Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas could really do well in future.

In the supporting cast, Tenzing Dalha needs to be mentioned first because he is such an amazing talent. This actor has been very impressive in every single movie of his, be it Axone (2019) or Guilty (2020), but somehow doesn't get talked about much. He was extremely natural and believable as Polo Longjam, and in my humble opinion the best actor of this film. Lisa Ray was extremely sharp and sensuous as Sheela, and it's such a shame that a jaw dropping beauty like her has no real interest in being an actress. Manisha Koirala, Rahul Ram and Ranjit Barot have small roles and they have done a decent job. The surprise package of the film however came in the final thirty minutes, with an incandescent Warina Hussain taking your breath away. Warina had been kept hidden from the promotions of the film and that strategy worked very well for the film. Warina has no dialogues in the film, but you will remember her after watching the film, that's how impactful her cameo is.

The music of the film is good, but it won't be counted among the best works of Rahman. I think one should never hype any particular song, because then it's almost guaranteed to disappoint you, and that's exactly what happens with 'O Aaashiqa'. It's a good song no doubt, but it's not a great song, and the movie hypes it to be a revolutionary song that will bring about a change in people's lives. The song moves you when it hits the high notes in the second stanza and you are spellbound, but the problem with so much buildup is that you keep expecting more from it, which it unfortunately does not deliver. 'Humnawaa' sung by Armaan Malik is a beautiful song and has an equally good picturization; this particular song has a lot of repeat value. 'Jwalamukhi' is hands down the best song of the film and singer Poorvi Koutish deserves as much credit as A. R. Rahman for that. Thankfully 'Jwalamukhi' wasn't wasted in the background and picturized quite thoughtfully. Edilsy Vargas is quite a sight during that song; her gorgeous looks and expressive eyes add a lot of depth to the song. 'Sai Shirdi' sung by Bela Shende is a lovely song, but when it plays out in the film, it leaves you absolutely awestruck.

The background music of the film was very reminiscent of the kind of music Rahman composed in the 90's and after a very long time I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The music used to showcase the magical bond between Jai and his mother was exceptional to say the least. The camerawork of the film was fine but I wish they hadn't opted for so much darkness. I just don't understand this artistic choice, why can't all frames be bright and visually appealing? The special effects were good in the scenes involving Jai and his mother but quite disappointing in the final song, 'Oracle'.

The final thirty minutes of the movie are it's best. As soon as the mysterious character of Rahul Ram meets Jai, the movie just becomes something else. The backstory of Jai's mother was beautifully told and it really uplifted the movie by quite a few notches. I think a powerful story might be able to bring about a change in a person but I just don't see a song being able to do that, regardless of how beautiful it may be. The ending with Ashwath Bhatt was a little difficult to digest and once again had some below par dialogues.

A. R. Rahman the musician is definitely way better than A. R. Rahman the storyteller, and unlike his debut as a composer he's not off to a winning start.

Awesome music by ARR. Great cinematography. But a very poor script.

Superb music and acting, but screenplay is not at all upto the mark,
drishaktawat1 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
*** spoiler alert

6 stars for the superb music, acting and direction Story concept is good which is basically based on Mugleazam concept (rich poor and complications),

However screenplay is weak .. if main motive of hero is to make 100 songs than the story should always stick to the main aim .. movie is a ' khichdi' of many stories .. father son story, main story, mother father story, hero and his friend story, story with singer, mental aylum story,

Movie is less inspiring but more depressive, hero struggling to get love of his life same time not receiving her calls and girl doesn't trust her true love gets demotivated by seeing a pic and not confronting her love,

If main goal is to make 100 songs so scenes should be in compliance with main goal .. people want to see new presentations of concepts not the old conspiracies, triangles and flashbacks,

Nevertheless movie is worth a watch, acting of all is definitely very good.. first movie and this level of acting is very impressive I doubt if any of them are star kids .. Music is extraordinary.

Movie is worth a watch but not something to be watched over and again ..could have been better.

NOTHING New In Terms of Story.
MandalBros-523 May 2021
99 SONGS is nothing new in terms of story.

Only visually good looking and some songs are good. Male lead is just okay, female lead had a very little to do. The character of the father of the female lead is too much irritating.

The 2nd half is quite better than 1st one. Music lovers may like this film.

HONESTLY SPEAKING I didn't like it.

Available on Netflix & JioCinema.

Boring story, mediocre music
jayaramanathan9 June 2021
It's an ARR film, expectations ran extremely high...if nothing else the music should blow our minds. Couldn't be further from the truth. The actors were amateurish, the direction left much to be desired, the story was ancient, done to death, track...Music, which one felt would score over all other aspects was A BIG LET DOWN. Barely a single hummable number.....even the ARR signature rhythm and gusto was missing as was the pathos and melody of earlier films like Roja, Bombay, Rangeela and of course the internationally Jai Ho. Just give it a miss and continue to believe in ARR.

Visuals, Poetry, Music - A deep dive into Rahman's world
abhinavrajput17 April 2021
Went to watch this film without any expectations and came back with heart full of visuals, poetry and music.

The film deep dives into Rahman's world. The realm, the places you have never been to. A no-nonsense film with best cinematography, perfect casting, unbelievable background score & songs (obviously).

What a debute @arrahman @vishweshk @ehanbhat.
