Beautifully acted, heart-wrenching yet heart-warming film
louisacareybrown10 September 2019
I felt compelled to write my first review, as this film doesn't have many and totally deserves a shout out.

The actors are fantastic, the story realistic and whilst, at times quite depressing, a heartfelt tale beautifully told. Definitely worth a watch.

Good intentions doesn't create a good movie
Source15-118 September 2020
I never write my own opinions here, but because this issue is close to my heart because me and my wife are about to go through IVF so I had to write my opinion. So I have a couple of issues with this movie:

1) It's seems to me like the man (and in this case a much younger one) is the main victim of the non furtiliry issue, but in this case he isn't. Any couple that have been through this and stayed together will testify that both sides are suffering and it doesn't matter how has the problem. You can never leave the person if you truly love them and it doesn't matter how hard it is, because once you leave once it's over you won't come back...

2) Why not adopt a child? They could've explored this important issue but they didn't.

So I felt disappointed by the final 25 minutes of the movie, because what you saw isn't a pure love it's pity in my humble opinion...

Baby blues

Modern tale of lust, love and labours. Only You is also full of humour and energy. O'Connor was extraordinary in God's Own Country, and he's on good form again. But Costa is even better.

This is a painful romance, and i may have opted for a more lacerating ending. But the mood of love wins you over.

The Greatest Love Story
robertsclan-0709114 September 2019
This is a beautiful love story. The on screen chemistry between Josh O'Connor (The Durrells, grew to love him in the series and very excited to watch him again) and Laia Costa is electric. Although a little slow in parts where the concentration is focused on Elena (Costa) just thinking and walking, she is so pretty to look at though. It really made me think about the many women who go through IVF treatment, it consumes your whole life! This movie is a must see!

Only if you like angst

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this film. I would recommend it if you like emotional films about relationships. Other reviews say that there are other better films about IVF but I haven't seen them and for me this film does a really outstanding job of covering the deeper issues that arise from infertility from both perspectives. She has all the identity questions and he shouts 'this happening to me too'. I found it believable and well acted. Seeing my brother go through this and his wife experiencing a lot of these issues I think I can say that. It's very tough but insightful.

Fantastic acting

Acting is great. Story is heavy but realistic. You can feel story, every single moment while watching. So, realistic story, great scenario with perfect acting...you can learn something.

Codependently Ever After

Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, the actors were good and I'd love to watch them in something else but this movie wasn't great. It did try to deal with important issues, but didn't actually do it very well.

The two characters seemed to have sexual chemistry but you didn't really see them connect on much else, and they seemed to just fall into wanting to be parents together. I get that it sometimes happens that way in real life, but still.

My biggest problem with the movie was that the characters issues never seemed to be dealt with. Elena has some self esteem issues around her age and womanhood that's not even touched on other than the how it relates to her fertility, and her fear of abandonment doesn't really get much room either.

Shane is a man-child who thinks relationships should be perfect which is seriously naive for a doctoral student and he seems to come from a place of privilege and expects everything to come easily. His attitude gets a bit of a ding when his dad tells him his parents fought sometimes and we're supposed to think that fixes everything.

In the end these two characters got back together, but to see them as anything more than two damaged people clinging to a messed up relationship is hard.

I wanted to like it...

Warning: Spoilers
What was the point of this? It starts off with two incredibly boring characters. I adore Josh O'Connor as an actor, but Jake is a complete personality sponge. The only trait he has is that he's studying a PhD (something they seem to only remember once every six months) and sometimes listens to music. Elena's personality is looking moody and lying about her age. Why anybody would trust somebody who lies about their age multiple times when they've just met is beyond me.

The two spend some time moaning at each other and occassionally having sex. There doesn't seem to be any spark, but they're both bored and then meet each other's friends. Jake sees Elena holding a baby and immediately decides to have a baby. They've been together a few months at this point, and never discuss it, except for Jake once making a vague remark. His next action is to force Elena to have unprotected sex, when she's firm in wanting to use a condom. Didn't think it needed stating, but forcing someone to do something they're not comfortable with in sex, particularly when it could result in something lifechanging is not okay!

They quickly discover they're not getting pregnant naturally, and go on a waiting list for IVF. This is all very understandable, and the fact that this causes additional stress and arguments is very believeable. This is a great middle of the film, although isn't exactly entertaining viewing. However, when it becomes apparent that Elena has an issue with her eggs and can't conceive that way, everyone in the film, including the entire medical community, seems to forget that surrogacy and adoption exist. There is a direct arrow repeatedly stated that Elena not being fertile means the couple can never have kids. The fact that they celebrate their one-year anniversary around this point draws attention to how absurd and unbelievable the timeline is.

It's completely convincing that fertility issues would cause arguments. But Elena repeatedly calls herself useless and worthless because she can't reproduce. She says she's pointless as a woman because of her ovaries. She tells her partner to leave her and find someone who can have his kids. Nobody seems to dispute what he's saying. If this film weren't written and directed by a woman, I'd assume some misogynistic meninst from Twitter had scrawled it down to make women feel bad about their bodies.

All the characters stating that they want perfection and that maybe their parents were or weren't perfect seems drawn from a book of clichés. Any screenwriter knows that it's important to show not tell, but this film seems to fail at telling the things which need to be told and all the things that could be subtle are bluntly hammered across.

Eventually the two characters are fighting and screaming and ask what they're doing together, finally getting to a point which has bothered me all the way along: what did they see in each other? It's never clear, even from the beginning. Is it just that they're both attractive and under 40?

Elena screams at Jake to leave and makes clear she doesn't like being with him, repeatedly forcing him to get out the flat. She rapidly becomes an immensely hateable figure for her irrational and selfish behaviour. Ten minutes later, however, she's sobbing at a café and demanding to know why Jake left. He insists he'll never come back. Then his dad tells him that he sometimes argued with her mum (I know he's meant to be a naïve 26-year-old, but surely everyone above the age of ten knows that sometimes parents fight?) and the two reconcile.

I really wanted to like this, but ultimately it just felt like a waste of everyone's time. Have no idea what all the critical praise and awards were about. It's not the first film to deal with this subject matter, nor is it the best.

A realist love story
valleyjohn21 February 2021
I have many films on my wishlist that I have no idea why i put it on there or who recommended it. Only You is not the sort of film that I would normally watch but it was on my watchlist for some reason and I'm kind of glad it was .

After a chance meeting on New Years Eve while waiting for a taxi home, Elena and Jake soon enter into a whirlwind relationship. Together, they explore what it takes to create an enduring relationship out of a fast love.

There is no getting away from it , this is a modern day love story but instead of it being like one of those hallmark sickly vomit inducing stories , this is about the ups and downs of a relationship. When people can't conceive it puts a massive strain on couples as this film shows and it's even more stressful when the woman's biological clock is ticking.

Josh O'Conner and Laia Costa are excellent in this . They are totally believable and you feel invested in their relationship and the process they are going through to get pregnant.

I found it quite hard to distinguish Josh O'Conner from his role as Prince Charles in The Crown but that's not anyone's fault as this was made before that role .

I was enjoying it for the first 30 minutes then it all turned baby drama, a bit too much. El had become a real cry baby 😂 and started annoying me.

In vitro veritas?

Better than I was expecting, largely because of the perfect performance by Laia Costa as Elena Aldana. I don't think it says anything really new about relationships or infertility, but it's an enjoyable film.

First world problems
paul2001sw-113 August 2022
When a couple meet in Harry Wootliff's romantic drama 'Only You', they don't think their age gap is going to be a problem; then they try to conceive and the trouble starts. There is potential in the material, but this is the sort of story where everyone is beautiful and well-off, in spite of the Glasgow setting we never hear a word of working-class Glaswegian, we also never see anyone actually do a day's work, and where characters born circa 1990 listen only to their parents' record collections. Thus we get the inexperienced young man and his temperemental older lover; but none of their experiences together grounded in the rest of the lives, so it's no wonder that their relationship itself becomes a source of stress. 'Only You' is in this sense a very apt title; but its inward-looking protagonists can't help but come across as spoilt.

Happy and Sad at the same time
natcalgary21 November 2019
Laia Costa seems to be type-cast into the same type of movie all the time. And every time she nails it. She is a great actress and doesn;t get the recognition she deserves. Over all this movie is sad but happy at the same time,

Traces of Before trilogy

Warning: Spoilers
Caught this by the off chance on the BBC and was very impressed by this film.

Very poeticly filmed and yet tragic the ending was a bit hoeky to make it a great film. Reminded me of the before trilogy especially Before Midnight.

The lead actors Laia Costa and Josh O'Connor have a great chemistry together yet Costa really dominates this film she is very captivating on her story arch.

Okay
Siftik30 August 2021
It's an okay movie. Felt very slow, a bit cringey, forced and questionable at times. Wouldn't really recommend. It was actually a bit dry and boring. The characters didn't have much depth to them other than wanting desperately to have a child together.

An emotional ride
umtjs26 January 2021
This film really does gulf up your emotions into a tidal wave. You don't know if you are happy for them one minute or close to tears the next. It was amazing to see Glasgow landmarks within this film. I really enjoyed the cinematography and sound to the film also.

IS LOVE ALL YOU NEED?
fionastaun12 June 2023
If you're feeling a bit down and drinking hot tea and staring at the couch cushions, you need this.

Mournful. That's the whole feeling. Downright low key sobbing love and mournfulness.

The thing is, sometimes you just have to have an hour or two of love performances that reach out over the screen to the couch and squeeze your heart.

The two main characters are not carved out in detail but just the three main event: meeting, pregnancy and deciding the future. I felt their portrayals were very French. Building their love through lingering looks, and passionate embrace. It makes for a great part of the film.

Bit slow. Bit bitty. But sit on the couch and have a lovely wallow.

This Story (Or Should I Say Stories) Has Been Told A Thousand Times Before
Willie-128 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There is nothing wrong with telling the same story multiple times as long as the story is told well. However, if you are going to tell a formulaic tale that is not original, then perhaps you shouldn't bite off more than you can chew. When that happens, a film begins to lose its idenity. That is exactly the issue with Only You. The problem isn't that O.Y. tells a familiar story. The problem is that it tells familiar stories. What is this movie about? Is it about love? Is it about loss? Is it about a May/December (maybe more like (June/October) love affair? Is it about problems that arise when a couple can't conceive a child? Maybe it's about a couple coming to a crossroads in their relationship. Or about two people who once loved each other, but circumstances rip them apart. Is it a film with some erotic tendancies? I could go on, but I won't. The point is, this movie is about all of those things. And therein lies the problem. When a film tries to cover this much territory in about two hours or so it suffers. And that is a shame. Because O.Y. has many worthy attributes. It is well acted. The two leads definitely have chemistry. And the screenplay, despite the overstuffed storyline is adequate. But it is almost impossible to appreciate the plight of the characters because...well...there's just too much plight. There are movies that have focused on multiple issues that were not hurt by trying to tell multiple stories and focus on multiple, deep subjects and issues. But most of those are longer films with experienced filmmakers. The writer/director of O.Y. had neither the time she (Harry Wootliff...yes her first name is Harry)needed, nor the experience necessary to try and adequately cover such an enormous amount of territory.
