2023 marks another year where the Academy Awards have shuttered horror from the competition, but genre fans know better than to expect anything less. Although there have always been exceptions in the past, such as "The Exorcist," "The Fly," and "Get Out," the Oscars' track record speaks for itself. But the truth is that horror folks don't really need the attention of the prestigious awards body when they have a better outlet to see their favorites receive some industry recognition.
If you're a horror nerd, then the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards is where you want to be paying attention. Although the famed magazine started this back in the '90s, it's only been in the past few years that they've started making it a yearly tradition. On top of that, the one-hour ceremony, which usually airs on Shudder, is curated for horror folks by horror folks. Where else are you going to...

Winnie Cheung’s “Residency,” which has its world premiere in the Bright Future section of Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, has debuted its trailer (below). Alief is selling the film, which is a “haunting metafictional tale about female artists pushed beyond their limits at a cursed artist residency.”
The film, set at New York artists’ studio The Locker Room, is described by Alief’s Miguel Angel Govea as “an adventurous take on the final girl horror trope.” It is a “hybrid feature dancing between fiction and non-fiction norms that plays like a punk rock cover of Gaspar Noé’s ‘Climax.'”
Cheung commented: “Rather than representing women as sexualized victims through the traditional lens of male fantasies, I’m exploring the real horror behind the anxiety of being a female artist, which is often mixed in with pleasure, delirium and joy.”

Plot: A young man struggling with a broken heart learns that his new place is full of restless spirits.
Review: Breakups are tough and have been the fodder for movie plots since the dawn of celluloid. Yet there’s something about Sorry About The Demon that feels very unique. Probably the way it takes the feeling of a breakup and twists the knife with humor. Because imagine going through a bad breakup and being so in the dumps that even the demon that inhabits the house you’re renting doesn’t want your soul. You can see where the laughs are aplenty.
Sorry About The Demon opens with a family being haunted by a demon. They’re told that the demon won’t leave unless they sacrifice someone. Their solution is to have a friendless loser move into the house. This immediately won me because it’s such a ridiculous...

Earlier this week we broke the news that Shelby Oaks has become the most-funded horror film project on Kickstarter.
The feature, written and to be directed by YouTube film critic/filmmaker Chris Stuckmann, is based on a recent internet mystery about a group of missing paranormal investigators.
On Monday, we reported that the project had reached $650,000 from 6,700 backers on the crowdfunding platform after launching its online campaign only three weeks prior.
Four days after that article, however, the movie has now raced past $1M and added 4,500 backers. That’s good-going for an indie horror movie based on an original concept and without star names attached. The project is also drawing attention from studios, according to Stuckmann.
“It’s so crazy, I don’t know what to say,” the critic and filmmaker said in a video message to contributors. “We can already make the movie in the way we want to.

Multiple found-footage videos surfaced online last year that prompted horror and Arg (alternate-reality game) fans to speculate about the veracity of the case and the whereabouts of the investigators. One video appeared to show the abduction of one of the group, known as Riley.
Aaron B. Koontz of Austin-based Paper Street Pictures is producing the film, which will be combination of documentary, found footage and traditional film footage styles.
The found-footage feature, written and to be directed by YouTube film critic/filmmaker Chris Stuckmann, is based on a recent Internet mystery about a group of missing paranormal investigators.
The project has raced to $650,000 from 6,700 backers on the crowdfunding platform after starting its online campaign three weeks ago.
The film will chart the story of the fictional mid-2000s U.S. investigative team called The Paranormal Paranoids. 2020, to say the least, has been a complete shitshow. The year has been weird, long, depressing, anger-inducing, and frustrating. But that dumpster fire has made the shiny parts shine bright in a way that made all the crap disappear for a few moments or hours at a time. And for that, I am grateful.
In a year that showed us that time actually has no meaning whatsoever, I know I’m not remembering half of the stuff that I watched and loved, but here are just some of the things that gave me joy, comfort, awe, or just some time away from what has become “the norm.”
Gretel & Hansel
The films of Osgood Perkins are so totally my jam. Gretel & Hansel is no exception. His fantastically creepy and twisted take on the story of two children getting lost in the woods is also a decidedly feminist piece that puts a...

Noah Segan has been popping up everywhere over the last year. He appeared in Knives Out in a scene-stealing role, he also recently directed a segment in the horror anthology Scare Package, and now he’s playing a cowboy who must take on a coven of witches for Aaron B. Koontz’s The Pale Door, which heads to theaters this weekend and will also be available to stream on VOD and Digital Platforms as well, courtesy of Rlje Films and Shudder.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Segan about his involvement with The Pale Door, and he discussed his experiences collaborating with both Koontz as well as his fellow co-stars, the fun of getting to transform himself into a cowboy and how he hopes to add the title of “feature film director” to his resume in 2021.

Just two months ago, the horror anthology Scare Package premiered on Shudder, which was spearheaded by Aaron B. Koontz (and it involved a handful of other talented filmmakers as well) and Cameron Burns. Now, the duo is back with yet another genre offering, The Pale Door, which pits a group of cowboys against a coven of witches.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Koontz about his latest film, and he discussed how Keith Lansdale got involved in the project, the immense challenges they faced during production on The Pale Door, and how Koontz was able to pull together a murderers’ row of talent in front of the screen for the horror Western.

One of my favorite horror anthologies to come out in some time is Scare Package, which was conceived by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns and features an array of filmmaking talent, including Emily Hagins, Chris McInroy, Noah Segan, Baron Vaughn, Anthony Cousins, and Courtney and Hillary Andujar. The film hits Shudder exclusively today, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead recently spoke with Koontz about the project, and how it was a labor of love created between him and a group of friends.
Koontz also discussed why it was important to him that Scare Package became a showcase for those who had been cutting their teeth in the world of short films, celebrating what fans love about the horror genre, and how Aew wrestler Dustin Rhodes got involved with Scare Package to pull off a very special role in the film.

For this review round-up, I’ll be digging into two films coming out this week, the delightfully meta horror anthology Scare Package and You Should Have Left, which features a reunion between writer/director David Koepp and star Kevin Bacon, who last teamed up on Stir of Echoes back in 1999.
Scare Package: Like most horror fans, I absolutely adore horror anthologies because when they’re done right, they can be the perfect showcase for innovative storytelling that celebrates everything we love about the genre. And in the case of Scare Package, that’s exactly what makes this project so special: you can feel the pure, unfettered admiration for horror pulsing through every single segment and the various wraparound segments to boot. It’s hilarious, gory, sometimes a little weird, but as a whole, Scare Package delivers everything you could want out of an anthological horror movie, and so much more.

Ask any fan of horror and they will tell you that to be a horror fan transcends mere love of the genre. Horror goes beyond the content of the films, it’s a community. Horror has its own rules and tropes that are gospel to those that speak the language of the films. For horror fans, there is a rite of passage and a ritual to knowing certain films by heart and recognizing titans of the both the films and the broader world surrounding them. Scare Package understands this and delivers a perfectly packaged film as a gift to the community and fans of horror everywhere.
Scare Package is the creation of Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura) & Cameron Burns. The film is an anthology of short horror segments that are brilliantly woven into a larger, overarching story. Seven directors flex their horror skills and enjoy a playground of tropes and twists,...

Shudder’s upcoming Scare Package is a love-letter to genre obsessions inked in blood by horror-loving filmmakers. Any anthology comes with ups and downs, but thankfully the “ups” here swing bigger than expected. Seven directors submit a collection of meta-spoofy spooks which share a collective heart that is forever in the right place. The bigger the horror fan, the harder the jokes land as recognizable structures or archetypes are roasted over an open flame. Sometimes to a charred, smokey Texas flavor that is worth drool-dribble reactions, other times overdone and burned to a bitter aftertaste that’s easier to forget.
So, let’s talk “package.”
Together, shorts double as old-school bites of horror nostalgia that populate a VHS rental joint owned by the film’s Randy Meeks replicant. As a new employee learns the ropes, titles are “explained” by either “Rad” Chad (Jeremy King), regular horror-bro customer Sam (Byron Brown...

Popcorn Frights co-founders and co-directors Igor Shteyrenberg and Marc Ferman have announced that they're taking their festival on the road with the Popcorn Frights Drive-In Horrorshow, kicking off on Saturday, May 30th with a horror anthology double feature of Scare Package and The Mortuary Collection.
Below, we have the official press release with additional details on the Popcorn Frights Drive-In Horrorshow, which will run through this summer at various drive-ins throughout South Florida.
In case you missed it, this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival was rescheduled for October, and you can learn more about the Drive-In Horrorshow and the festival on their official website.
