Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A goat is slaughtered and bled out with help from the boys. While the killing cut is slightly off screen, there is a great deal of blood. Children are shown playing with the severed head.
  • The boys are shown caring for a bird, then come back in the next scene telling their father how they killed it. While the killing isn't shown, the children do speak graphically about it.
  • Young men caught acting against the rebels are shown being herded into a courtyard pocked with bullet holes. There is a long close-up on a few of the younger ones (probably in their late teens or early twenties) crying. It is implied but not shown that these enemies of the rebels were about to be executed.
  • The father is shown receiving some medical help soon after losing his leg, including shown blood and stitches in his face.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The father shouts out for more drugs/medicine after losing a leg.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A scene where the father is returning home after losing his leg; his family is crying hysterically.
  • Children are jokingly threatened by family members, including talk of being flayed alive.
  • The boys are shown training to become soldiers, including going through drills where they are shot at with live ammunition to get used to the noise.
  • A young boy is shown making a homemade bomb, which the other boys all laugh at and stomp on to show bravery. The bomb explodes, but no one appears hurt.
