Always Watch Your Opponent

It's amazing how different this show feels when it has a clear focus and doesn't try and rely on over a dozen characters to do heavy lifting. Hasn't it been awhile since it's felt like Stephen Amell has been the centerpiece of the show and not just an ensemble member? Tonight's Arrow was far from perfect but the pacing was miles better than what we have seen in weeks past, and they are FINALLY giving focus to Emiko and Oliver's relationship, or lack thereof.

A couple decent fights certainly helped tonight as well. It still bothers me that Oliver has to fight with his hood down, small thing sure, but it's impactful. Otherwise, I enjoyed the fast pace of these fights and the ongoing conflict with Dante/Emiko/Oliver. We also learned a little bit more through flashbacks (which believe it or not were worth screentime). She also apparently played a part in the Queens Gambits demise? Not that we needed any more controversy around that.

Overall, it was a vast improvement on where we have been in recent weeks, but still miles away from where the show should be.

An entertaining episode with a high focus on drama and nostalgia
Holt34426 March 2019
The Ninth Circle is upon us, an organization straight from the graphic novels. After having lots of episodes since the prison arc having been no main plot it feels great to have a main plot again and this was has a lot of potential. The episode actually contained some good drama, no bad scenes at all. The flashbacks was handled great, focusing more on Emiko to show her back story and there is a lot of Easter eggs inside those flashbacks and something that ties the story together in a magnificent way.

Some great character moments of this episode was of course the Green Arrow fight sequences and him using his bow in an talented and awesome way. Some other highlights was the presence of Robert Queen and the character Dante that I'm finding really great, he's also played fantastically by Adrian Paul.

Invasion of the Ninth Circle
highmarksreviews26 March 2019
It would seem as if the question of how long Arrow will drag out its season seven endgame has been answered mostly by "Inheritance", an eventful chapter enveloped in family drama. The show still couldn't shed all its minor issues (things have been slightly inconsistent since Elseworlds), but I'll take major plot and character developments any day.

In terms of pushing a compelling conflict into the spotlight, this episode succeeded extremely well. The reveal about Emiko's (Shea Simooka) true nature and her surprising cooperation with Dante (Adrian Paul) adds a new layer to the villain scene. Given there are only five episodes left though, I hope the writers make room for both characters to grow as bad guys, rather than let them meander with seemingly tedious activities. I was half-expecting a Dante vs Team Arrow showdown where he knocks all of them out, sadly that never came.

On the flip side, the show did execute a handful of cool fight sequences. Emiko vs. Oliver (Stephen Amell) in the bunker was a stylishly shot encounter charged with martial arts flourish and emotion, while the warehouse raid also succeeded as being a visceral treat.

The writing was also particularly strong at many points, feeling a tad more natural than it usually does, despite the whole narrative kicking into action slowly. However, Laurel's (Katie Cassidy Rodgers) story seems to be a little off. Her sudden rift into anger made little sense and while exploring her dark side is necessary due to the upcoming Birds of Prey themed episode, I feel as if that plot and hers currently, halted the momentum of the main conflict at hand. We finally have the Ninth Circle in their blank-masked glory, so why not delve deeper into that. It's actually kind of exciting seeing this terrorist group being introduced. It's a type of force Team Arrow hasn't really faced and their presence could turn things around quickly.

As for Emiko, I'm a little unsure if her character can 100% succeed as a baddie. Her flashbacks were neat and all (minus a few unnecessary details that I won't spoil), but I would much rather see Dante causing problems in Star City more than anything. Having Jamey Sheridan back was a treat though and his portrayal of Robert Queen and his neglectful treatment of his daughter hit hard and helped flesh out a new side of her character aside from the angry, brooding sister of Oliver.

"Inheritance" is a great episode of Arrow. It set up a compelling new conflict that while leaves much to be fleshed out in the coming episodes, seems to be a winner. Laurel's storyline was bungled and the future seems unclear on how the Ninth Circle will be able to leave their mark with all the drama tossed in, but time will tell.

A solid episode!!!

Warning: Spoilers
First of all the hide. Secret of Emiko is known by Laurel and that's the satisfaction about the episode. Second I like the fact that the team Arrow is teaming up with Emiko, that was something I didn't expect. Big step up for the show. I hope it'll stay like that till the end...

Pieces are coming together

Warning: Spoilers
I have missed the older Arrow with its compelling twists and turns. This episode had that same formula that I really liked. No flash-forwards which gave room for flash-backs and more scenes with Dante and Emiko which made great moments and more development. The main highlights was seeing Adrian Paul doing a very decent job as Dante and the twist with Emiko having something to do with the Queens Gambit. And finally the main villain is confirmed

1 minute of the old Oliver
jacksutarno26 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was very much impressed with 1 minute of Oliver's skills. The scene in the bunker against Emiko was very cool. It was almost perfect except for Emiko catching the arrow at the end which once again is supposed to highlight the fact that her and Oliver are of equal skill level. I also like Oliver shooting the drones at that speed, it reminded me of season 1 with the tennis ball. I don't understand why Oliver is so dead certain on trying to change Emiko. John was a spectacular supporting character this episode literally giving the exact scenario they are in now. And John made the hard decision about his brother who he knew his whole life. Oliver has known Emiko for 30 seconds by my count. I would understand and connect with the story more if it was Thea who he was trying to change, but there is no emotional resonance between Oliver and Emiko, no chemistry. It was interesting to find out Emiko is the leader and not the follower of the 9th circle, well done writers I'll give you that. But come on Oliver... you just need to kill this one... she is pure evil she has accepted she's pure evil... if she turns good at the end of the season I will accept that the CW and DC has no depth. Thank you for reading

Eh.
cruise013 September 2019
2 out of 5 stars.

The episode you learn more about Amiko and her motives for being on Dantes side. Which gets more predictable. The story behind it is dull and boring. The action is repetitive and anticlimatic.
