Tim uses a call sign, as do the other operators, when talking on the Ham (amateur) radio. The call signs used are not American issued call signs. Additionally, Tim advised that Ham radio operators use "handles," or nicknames. In Ham radio only call signs are used while handles are commonly used with CB radios. To be a ham operator you are required to pass a test, and the frequency that Tim was talking on requires a higher level license. Tim was correct about Ham radio being one of the only communications systems operable during 9/11 and during the hurricane.
