Terrible movie
iamdk36917 March 2020
Unable to bear through the whole movie. First day first show stood through rain for the ticket and was disappointed terribly. Occasional loudspeaker sounds and a helpless protagonists was putting everyone into sleep. The failure to put the audience into the mood was where the director failed. However it is an effort in this genre, in a field less touched. Mohanlal 's face was not like the usual him, looked plum. THe romance, comedy everything went way words.

A disaster movie
lalmathewsgeorge4 September 2018
I am so sad and upset watching this movie being a Lalettan fan. The direction is senseless and story is nonsense. How can Lalettan accept such a stupid character where the movie was dragging all 2+ hours. Release of Movie's original DVD in 30 days past theatre release answer the question of how good the movie was.

Worst movie yet
reemjacob-6009313 July 2018
2 hours wasted. Movie is nothing like the name. The story is the silliest ever. The director has no clue what he was doing.

Nadia Moidu should really stop acting. I just couldn't watch the exaggerated acting.

Mohanlal was in pain the whole time like I was. After all these decades he still can't pick a good script.

Anyway the worst movie of the year yet.

Neerali - A failed attempt
joppanLive7 September 2018
A failed attempt! The film lacks the depth and intensity that movies of this genre demands. Mohanlal tried his best, but a shoddy story and an illogical script put all his efforts in vain. Most of the the characters were wrongly casted. The climax lacks the much essential punch and thrill of an exciting survival film. Also, the film lacks logic at many places which makes this movie unbearable - especially, the monkey sequences...which makes me 'admire' the imagination skill of our scriptwriters...ohh! bayankaram thane...Overall not disappointed! (I have seen Mohanlal-movies even worse than this..)

Perfect definition of time wastage
michael_b-8011919 July 2018
The movie is all about screening and showing Mohanlal, no storyline, no useful plot, no meaningful events, at most importantly: No message or lesson! I have watched it with the group of Mohanlal fans in Dubai, even few of them have literally slept while watching. If you are or are not a fan of Mohanlal, do NOT spend your money and time by watching this boring joke.

An excellent film.
joeeshwar-14 April 2019
'Neerali' ( Octopus ) doesn't feel like an Indian film. Its treatment is European: subtle and realistic. It would best be called a 'disaster-thriller' meaning ' A story about a peril where the protagonist's job and mission are to survive and to save the ones/ one with him. It is a 'film noir' because it has melancholy, disillusionment, ambiguity and desperation due to the accident. The screenplay's style develops into paranoid fiction and magical realism and ends with a philosophical note.

Umpteen critics and cinema lovers wrote 'Neerali' dealt with fear, but I think it dealt with helplessness. It deals with the helplessness experienced by its protagonist Sunny George. The viewer experiences the progression of Sunny's helplessness through Mohan Lal's awesome performance. As time lapses, tension mounts, helplessness reaches its zenith. The graph rises, and Sunny George takes us through a ride of sheer helplessness. 'Between the lines', Sunny expresses the uncertainty of life through small gestures and for people who have been in similar situations it is real. In near-death experience seeing the souls of loved ones is reported across the world. Sunny to see one such soul, which I think was a flash of brilliance concerning character portrayal for such sequences.

Saju's story revolves around a pick-up van hanging off a cliff with two people, wounded and crying for help. Other characters include a snake, a monkey and the voice of a retreat preacher from the valley. The film's principal set up is around that. Ajoy's directorial space is confined to a limited situation and place, and he has done an excellent job in making the film convincing. ( Only film-makers can understand the constraints of doing such a film ) Two sequences make him an outstanding director: the film's opening and ending with a Bumblebee. It is a significant portrayal of giving freedom to the soul to experience the magic of life.

As a film-lover, I think Neeraly is a carefully researched and executed subject. The dialogues are natural with philosophical insights. It has the wisdom of a gemologist( Sunny, Lal sir as always with his magic). It has the burdens of a father ( Veerappan, Suraj as always has performed well) It has the psychological complexities of a young woman in her shoes ( Nina, Parvathy has done an outstanding job as a complicated Nina ). Nadia Moithu, Dileesh and the vibrant young girl who played Veerappa's daughter deserve an ovation for their outstanding contribution. It has the constant presence of the divine and morality finally in and out.

A good and a very realistic movie
devikabsree21 July 2018
I feel that the title of the movie is not very suitable and also that the trailer is very misleading. The trailer gave me a wrong impression that the lead character of the movie is in (a wrong) relationship with various women which is not the case. (Initially. I even decided not to watch the movie after seeing the trailer.)

The protagonist in the movie is very realistic and does not possess great mental and physical capabilities (unlike heroes in 90% of other survival films). Acting is very subtle and does not contain 'severe' facial expressions. There are no great stunts. So in case the audience is expecting all these, they will be in for a disappointment. If you are in for how an ordinary person will respond to a terrible accident, you will enjoy the movie.

A total disappointment
tayseer-ms11 September 2018
Totally disappointing that a great actor like Mohanlal could work in such a near disaster movie. This is a flop in all departments.

An Experimental film, Presented in front of the wrong audience.
jishnupdev5 April 2019
Nearali couldn't keep up the expectation of the audience?

No. Because most of the Malayalees expected a mass entity of lalettan, slow-motion fight, and some cheesy songs. Neerali has none of the above. Neerali was"a never before in Malayalam" . and I believe director could do justice to that experiment. wrong time and the wrong audience failed this film. Kudos to the team.

Experimental film Keralites wont digest
gokscasm15 July 2018
I must firstly applaud Mohanlal for giving a shot at this film. A survival film simply revolving around the great acting prowess that is Mohanlal. He eases through the pain with such conviction that you feel for the character.

Ajoy Verma could have made the script meatier but I dont make films so I'd appreciate the effort here.

Go for the film.

Capsule Review: Neerali (1 Star)
nairtejas18 September 2018
The effeminate air of the lead actor aside, director Ajoy Varma's Malayalam-language directorial debut will be best known 20 years from now as a failed attempt not at making a film but at fooling its audience that it regards with the lowest of respect. Unlike the director or writer Saju Thomas, I paid attention to details in Neerali and I was put off in the first five minutes itself. For my non-pedantic friends, the turn-off will happen at Mohanlal's character's introductory monologue where he raves about his father's historical war escapades all while suppressing the flying powers of a housefly. That he later ends up in a carrier van with a half-dead man (Suraj Venjaramoodu), hanging by the end of a cliff, putting into actions experiments he saw on Instructables.com as a child, forms the rest of the 130-minute snoozefest. For a film that is marketed as a survival thriller, Neerali never becomes interesting, and often depends on its lead character's boring antics to grasp its audience's attention. With awful, repetitive background score that is supposed to make me bite my lips but instead makes me yawn, director Varma cooks up a film that is inconsequential, massively irritating (also thanks to Nadia Moidu and her ghastly performance), and ultimately an unnecessary addition in the database of Malayalam cinema. Neerali should not have left the editing room because it is so bad that I'm a 100% confident even the makers looked each other in the eye, shrugged, and waited with bated breath at the degree of failure their film would enjoy as the film reel/digital copy left the producers' office that Thursday night. TN.

Neerali is the best example of why experimental films are never a sure shot success.
CobertNeede14 July 2018
After almost 7 months of nothing, Mohanlal is back with a thriller, well sort of. Neerali works in parts. It's a great 'cliff hanging' movie, if you're into that sort of stuff and can make you sleep paralytic within minutes.

Neerali is so bad that 1 hour into the film you will adjust your inner film critic to the quality of the film so that subconsciously you will be satisfied that your money didn't go wasted just like that. Mohanlal was barely 'acting'. He was almost literally in pain throughout the dialogue deliveries and other dull plot devices. Suraj offers some amount of comic as well as 'acting' relief. Nadia Moidu was not even in the 'zone'. Casting was miles off. Young, energetic options were certainly available.

For a film that includes a 10cr + budget for VFX alone, Neerali is a sure disaster. The positives range from appreciable VFX work, great score and brilliant yet small subtleties that give this hard and unimpressive film a chance.

If Mohanlal continues this kind of performance in Odiyan, which is possibly the most hyped film of 2018, it is going to be really hard for fans to cheer for it.

Terrible and pathetic
gvr-6082127 June 2021
What a mess. I just watched tamil dubbed version of this. Seriously pathetic. What a dirty story. Mohanlal is another male chauvinist who thinks he can make success everywhere. This movie is one example of his character. No idea why such a movie is ever taken.

Parvathy - The new Sensation
rameee-5243917 July 2018
Awesome movie. Laletten is stunning in the movie as usual. Parvathy is very impressive with her natural acting and she hold the audience captive throughout the movie. Undeniably the new sensation in the industry.
