Warner Bros. Discovery is to significantly expand its investment and production of Japanese anime through its existing local studio in Japan.
“We have a Japanese anime studio, which has been producing five or ten anime series per year, over the last few years,” said James Gibbons, Wbd president of Asia-Pacific. “We’ve approved expansion to take that to more than ten series per year.”
The studio has been operational since 2011 and delivered over 80 titles in that span, a mix of high-quality anime, live action series and movies. These include “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” which was originally serialized in a manga magazine starting in 1987 and became an animated series that launched in 2012, the “Record of Ragnarok” series and a “Batman Ninja” anime movie.
“We’ve sold them to third parties. That has been one of the metrics. And they are doing very well,” said Gibbons. “And, so, because we see the appeal of the category,...

Although there is an abundance of animes revolving around the disciplines and complex themes of ninjutsu set across various settings or time periods, the mystique associated with the genre always finds a steady fanbase among viewers with each new venture. Therefore, a couple of years ago, when it was announced that the creative minds behind the anime adaptations of Jujutsu Kaisen, Afro Samurai, and Batman Ninja were collaborating to create an original Shinobi-themed anime series for Adult Swim, titled Ninja Kamui, it was received as a welcome surprise by otaku worldwide.
After the release of the pilot episode of Ninja Kamui this weekend, viewers found themselves hooked on the series almost instantly, as the tried and tested method of the Shinobi theme perfectly complementing the emotional core of a story has worked out pretty well. As the old adage goes, a hero is only as good as their villain. In Batman's case, he's one of the greatest superheroes of all time, thanks in no small part to his arch-nemesis, the Joker. There aren't many classic Batman tales where the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't factor in some way. He's an astonishing character, depicted in various forms on the big and small screen. Who can forget Jack Nicholson's portrayal in 1989's "Batman," directed by Tim Burton? Or Cesar Romano's campy take in the classic "Batman" TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward? Heck, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Academy Awards for donning white makeup and the iconic purple suit in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Todd Phillips' "Joker." There's no end to Joker's madness, and seeing the different iterations is always fascinating.
Perhaps the most memorable depiction of Joker comes from Mark Hamill,...

If you’re wondering where all the Batman movies are currently streaming, you’ve come to the right place.
The Caped Crusader is not just one of the most iconic DC Comics characters of all time, he’s also one of the most prominent figures in the last few decades of blockbuster cinema. While Adam West kicked things off with the 1960s TV series “Batman” and subsequent film, filmmaker Tim Burton gave the character a big screen blockbuster with 1989’s “Batman.” Michael Keaton filled the role that was later inhabited by the likes of Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck – and that’s not to mention the bevy of animated iterations that have come and gone over the years.
With a new Batman film on the horizon debuting Robert Pattinson’s take on the character, what better time to revisit past iterations of the character. Below is...

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

Let’s get this out of the way: Star Wars: Visions is wonderful, a pleasure to watch from start to finish, even if it does tend to lean on the same subject matter from one anime short film to the next. But Visions‘ over-reliance on Jedi stories is more than fair. After all, George Lucas heavily borrowed from real samurai history and traditions for his laser sword-brandishing space wizards. It’s only right that the seven Japanese animation studios assembled to bring Visions to life should get a chance to reinterpret Jedi lore now.
I won’t be going into heavy spoilers in this review, as you should really go into each of these stories fresh. Plus, since most of the shorts are less than 20 minutes long, revealing even the smallest twists can give whole episodes away. But what I will say is that each short does an excellent job...

This article contains Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins spoilers.
It’s been a long time since we’ve been to the movies and an even longer time since we’ve seen a ninja flick on the big screen. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is a dazzling return to the underrated ninja genre – a breakout premiere in the shadow of the pandemic.
Ninja films rarely earn a theatrical showing anymore. They are pigeon-holed as B-grade movie fodder, and justifiably so. Back in the 1980, ninja films proliferated when second and third-run movie theaters ruled. Campy, low budget ninja pictures were popular fare there back then, right alongside slasher films and teen sex comedies. But with the advent of home entertainment, those cheap flea-ridden theater seats atop soda-sticky floors are long gone. Nowadays, most new ninja films go straight to streaming so to see one on the big screen is quite a treat for fans of the genre.

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sets Gotham’s caped crusader in a vintage martial arts homage. Directed by Sam Liu, who also directed the animated movie version of one of the greatest Batman graphic novels ever published, Batman: The Killing Joke, this is the 42nd project in the ongoing DC Universe Movies series.
However, Soul of the Dragon is an original tale, not based on a precedent comic. Like the eye popping anime-style film Batman Ninja, this is a completely stand-alone story. Batman: Soul of the Dragon is yet another chapter in the many creation tales for Batman. It tells of his martial indoctrination and joining him on this adventure are three of the best martial artists within the DC multiverse: Lady Shiva (Kelly Hu), Ben Turner a.k.a. Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White), and Richard Dragon (Mark Dacascos).

One of the more offbeat takes on the Batman legend in recent years, 2018’s Batman Ninja transplanted the world of the Dark Knight into anime. Junpei Mizusaki took the directing reins in an animated film designed by Takashi Okazaki of Afro Samurai fame. It’s now being reported that we’ll be getting a live-action adaptation of the material, albeit not as a feature film, but as a stage play. While this may be disappointing for some wanting to see a niche Batman movie, a play is undoubtedly an intriguing prospect.
It’s fair to say that we weren’t too keen on Batman Ninja when the original animated version arrived a few years ago, which we put down as visually impressive but a bit of a mess in other respects. Still, the movie has been enough of a success for Warner Bros. and its Japanese partners on DVD, Blu-ray...

Exclusive: As the Asian and Asian American community in Hollywood continues to bask in the awards season victories of Lulu Wang’s The Farewell and Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) looks to add to Asian representation with the eighth annual Cape New Writers Fellowship. Partnering with major industry partners, Cape will launch the professional development program which trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood.
“As reflected by the Asian and Pacific Islander sweep of the Oscars screenwriting awards last night (original and adapted), it is clear stories written by our community have mainstream appeal,” said Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape Executive Director. “Pipeline programs like the Cape New Writers Fellowship are critical to provide a springboard into the industry and to elevate authentic storytelling.”
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship was co-founded and is co-chaired by Steve Tao and Leo Chu (Creator/Showrunner of Supah Ninjas and Afro Samurai; Batman Ninja screenwriter).
Fellows will participate in masterclasses and writing labs where they will receive one-on-one mentorship with industry professional including Walter Hamada, Adele Lim, Amy Rardin (Co-Creator/Ep of Charmed), Alex Tse (Co-Creator/Ep of Wu-Tang: An American Saga), Monica Macer (Showrunner/Ep of Gente-fied), Melinda Hsu Taylor (Showrunner/Ep of Nancy Drew), Laverne McKinnon, Jonathan King, and Lana Cho (Co-ep Four Weddings and a Funeral).

It’s probably safe to say that most modern readers of Batman comics have heard one man’s voice in their head when sitting down to enjoy the Caped Crusader’s adventures on the printed page – and that’s Kevin Conroy’s. Ever since blowing us all away with his character-defining performances on Batman: The Animated Series, he eventually returned for other shows like Batman Beyond and Justice League Unlimited, not to mention a slew of video games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum and its sequels.
Now, with yet another interactive experience starring the Dark Knight on the way, fans far and wide are understandably wondering if Conroy will once again lend his pipes to the timeless icon. And before we get to what he had to say regarding the matter, you should know that the project is in the hands of Arkham Origins developer WB Games Montreal, and that...

Now that Batman: Gotham by Gaslight has opened the door for various other Elseworlds tales to be adapted as animated films, Superman: Red Son will be the first to follow in its footsteps. To be quite honest, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise because the limited series written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Dave Johnson has long remained one of the most popular in the line, not to mention DC fans demanding this become a reality for years.
To briefly sum up what that story entailed for those unfamiliar, what you need to know going into your first viewing of the animated flick is that it explored that possibility of baby Kal-El’s rocket landing in Soviet Russia instead of in Smallville, Kansas. As you can imagine, the Comrade of Steel had a very different upbringing than the hero we’ve come to know otherwise.

1. “The Politician” (available September 27)
Why Should I Watch? It’s Ryan Murphy’s first original series for Netflix. That’s the narrative TV enthusiasts and industry titans will be watching, more so than any high school election shenanigans, when “The Politician” debuts this month. After signing a whopping $300 million overall deal in February 2018, Murphy is rolling out his first big-ticket Netflix series, and his deal (along with more than few others) is meant to help maintain subscribers as the O.G. streaming giant faces new competition from the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+. The size of its audience is even more important than whether or not it’s any good, but awards prospects are top of mind for this star-studded venture. During his time at FX, Murphy served as an enticing dual threat: prestige and popularity. Now, he’s got to carry that over to Netflix.
Bonus Reason: Well, the cast is pretty stacked.

Injecting an intoxicating shot of frantic energy and sleek color directly into your pupils, the postapocalyptic sci-fi action saga “Promare” plays like an anime-induced euphoric trip.
Marking the first feature release for both Japanese outfit Studio Trigger and its co-founder and director Hiroyuki Imaishi, this visual potion spiced with fiery duels and supernatural machinery is at its most potent when taken without much concern for its bewildering mechanics.
Imaishi is best known for fan-favorite shows “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann,” works that feature campy erotic innuendos mostly missing from “Promare.” And he carries over the vividly graphic style of animation and fast-paced editing from those episodic hits into his theatrical debut, based on a screenplay by longtime collaborator Kazuki Nakashima (“Batman Ninja”).

Throughout the years, Batman has given several young folks the opportunity to take up the mantle of Robin in the comics. Whether it be Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Carrie Kelley, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown or Damian Wayne, they all have supporters and a rabid fanbase backing them. If there’s one that folks have wanted to see up on the big screen perhaps more than any other, though, it’s Todd and more specifically, his persona of Red Hood.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Jason Todd was killed by the Joker back in A Death in the Family during the 1980s, before being resurrected in the controversial, yet seminal, Under the Red Hood nearly two decades later (time passes differently in comic book land). Usurping the Red Hood alias from the Clown Prince of Crime’s days predating his (more) flamboyant stage, Todd has since become one of DC’s most popular anti-heroes.

If anything, Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn't bonkers enough.
In the gloaming of the 21st Century’s second decade, the pop-cultural narrative has been dominated by superhero mash-ups and the idea of shared universes.
From the McU to the Dceu, from Ready Player One to Wreck-It Ralph, audiences have favoured combination over innovation. Whether you deride it as the end of culture, or forgive it as a collective grasp for familiarity in a world too mad to comprehend, it’s hard to deny that it is, for better or worse, what people want.
So it is that we find ourselves watching Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Fears of a cultural nadir aside, there’s tons to enjoy in this surprisingly apposite meeting. Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are all, at their core, city-based crimefighters with an animal theme and a plenty of martial arts moves.

2019 is shaping up to be an amazing year for DC animation. Already, we’ve seen the impressive Reign of the Supermen, and if that weren’t enough, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five arrives in April, with the long awaited Batman: Hush adaptation also set to debut at some point this summer. Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, meanwhile, is scheduled for release in the fall and finally, we have the cherry on top of it all in the form of Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book miniseries written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Freddie Williams II is acting as the source material for this effort and given that every character was penned perfectly, not to mention the narrative itself being top notch as well, our hopes are certainly high for this one.

When the announcement for the Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie hit the web yesterday morning, I think we were all taken off-guard – but in a good way. After all, it wasn’t until the these entities came together in comic books a few years back that a possible meeting had only previously existed whenever kids mixed and matched their action figures.
As of right now, not too many plot details have been disclosed, but on the plus side, though, it’s been revealed that the Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book miniseries written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Freddie Williams II will serve as the source material. Knowing that, we can expect for the flick to hit many of the same beats found in the transdimensional crossover if indeed the filmmakers adhere close to the literature.

We recently learned that the classic DC comic Batman: The Long Halloween is going to be getting a two-part animated film from Warner Bros. Animation. Well, now another classic DC comic story is reportedly in development.
According to Revenge of the Fans, DC is developing an animated adaptation of Mark Millar’s Superman: Red Son. This is another DC Comics story that fans have been wanting to see adapted for a long time. I’m not sure why it took so long, but at least it’s happening now!
For those of you unfamiliar with Red Son, it’s an Elseworld story that puts an interesting twist on the Superman mythology… what if Superman crash-landed in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas?
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Imagine a reality where the world’s most powerful super-being does not grow up in Smallville, Kansas – or even America, for that matter…...

After taking in Batman Ninja not too long ago, it’s probably safe to say that a palette cleanser’s in order – one which thankfully looks like it’ll arrive soon enough in the form of The Death of Superman. Having made that bold statement, you may wonder how I can have seemingly blind confidence in something, but it’s important to remember that the folks who put together the films making up the standard DC Universe animated line have very rarely let us down.
Granted, this is the second time this material has been adapted to an animated movie (Superman: Doomsday first took a go at it back in 2007), but now the story has much more room to breathe because it’ll be split into two films: The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen.

Batman: Hush is finally receiving an animated adaptation in 2019.
The beloved Batman: Hush storyline from the comics is being adapted into an animated film by DC.
The original story, which was written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Jim Lee, follows a mysterious villain known only as Hush who seems intent on stalking Batman and ruining his life. Unfortunately for the Caped Crusader, it seems that all of the city's most notorious villains have picked this moment to go after the Dark Knight as well. To make matters worse, a series of incidents brings a lot of "old friends" back into Batman's life just as he is trying to explore whether or not he and Catwoman have a future together.

In the 1950s, Batman was transformed into a variety of beings or wore a colorful assortment of costumes to goose sales. Thankfully, that silliness was retired with the New Look and wasn’t resurrected until the Elseworlds what if stories of the 1990s. That same approach has now crept from the page to the screen with Batman Ninja, out now on DVD from Warner Home Entertainment.
This anime-style adventure comes from director Junpei Mizusaki, (producer of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), working from a script by Kazuki Nakashima and character designs from Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai). As a result, it comes with a strong pedigree for the creative approach.

I’m honestly still in shock at this movie, because, by the law of both Batman and ninjas, there shouldn’t have been a way to screw this up. As much guff as he gets for being the only thing that DC seems to want to do anything with, Batman is DC’s most marketable hero for a reason: he’s an inherently interesting character with an unparalleled rogue’s gallery, a great supporting cast and a cache full of awesome, Bond-like gadgets. Batman Ninja is the missed opportunity we’ve come to expect from Warner Bros. Batman and Gotham City’s supervillains are thrown back in time to Feudal Japan via Gorilla Grodd’s time machine. The microsecond differences between Batman and the other foes being sent back in time means that some have been in Feudal Japan for two years; The Penguin, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and others have seized the power of the federal states. There plan: to combine their states to build a time machine so they can go home.
The Joker is the de facto leader and proving once again that it’s always a Batman vs The Joker fight. The other supervillains acting more like advanced henchmen than a genuine threat to the Dark Knight. This inability to move away from The Joker, to...

Tony Hale: Well I typically, I played more passive and quirky stuff, this guy is quirky but it’s fun to play dark and get really crazy. In “Veep”, the show I do there’s always this understanding of like lets get as real as possible, lets get subtle kind of comedy, this you can just goes nuts.

While facing off against Gorilla Grodd at Arkham Asylum, a time machine Grodd was working on, malfunctions and teleports Batman along with some of his foes and allies into feudal Japan. Having appeared two years later than the rest, Batman finds that a war is going on with Joker, Poison Ivy, Penguin, Two-Face, and Deathstroke all holding reign over different areas of Japan. With allies like Nightwing, Robin and a group of Ninjas that prophesized his appearance batman must rebuild Grodd’s time machine to return to present-day Gotham.
In order to fix the timeline, Batman must enlist the help of Grodd, but the Gorilla has his own motives. Combined with the chaotic and unpredictable nature of Joker aided by Harley Quinn, Batman has to face many adversities in order to restore the timeline.
The greatest strength of “Batman Ninja” probably rests within the character design by Takashi Okazaki.

Although it’s not from the usual line of DC Universe animated movies, Batman Ninja sure did have a lot of buzz preceding its debut. But now that audiences have had time to digest the flick, it’s proven to be highly divisive. Then again, that shouldn’t come as much of a shock given how this is such a radically different take on the Dark Knight and his supporting characters.

One reason why the character of Batman has endured for 79 years is that he’s so malleable. Sure, there are intrinsic qualities that unite various interpretations such as his superior intellect, martial arts skills and care for his fellow man, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been portrayals on opposite ends of the spectrum. For example, both Adam West and Ben Affleck have brought something very different to the table, but neither man’s efforts were no less valid than the other – and the same sentiment can be extended to comics and animation.
