- In 1985, in Hawkins, El and Mike are in love with each other. Lucas, Max and Will miss Mike that is ignoring them and go to the movie theater together. There is a power failure in Hawkins for a short period. Dustin returns home and does not find his friends. When they reunite, he explains that he has a girlfriend called Suzie and they go to a top of a hill to talk to her. His radio does not work and his friends leave him alone. Out of the blue, he picks up a Russian communication on his radio. Billy schedules an encounter with Karen Wheeler during the night.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Russian scientists are attempting to open a portal to the Upside Down. The chief commander chokes one of the scientists to death because the project is not yet complete, and tells the others that they have one year.
One year later, it's summer in Hawkins. Mike and Eleven are making out in Eleven's room at Hopper's house. He tries to enforce a rule that states that her door must be open at least 3 inches, but she slams the door with her powers. Later, Mike meets Lucas, Will, and Max at the new mall. Steve, who is working at an ice cream store in the mall, helps them sneak into a movie theatre. The lights go out in the mall and all over Hawkins. A swirling mass of dust is seen coming to life in a basement as rats run away. The lights come back on and Will has flashbacks of the Shadow Monster.
The mall is revealed to be putting other stores in Hawkins out of business, including the general store where Joyce works. Hopper comes into the store to vent about Eleven and Mike's behavior and Joyce suggests that he have a heart to heart talk with the kids, urging him to stay calm. She helps him draft a speech for the kids, but he is obviously uncomfortable with it. Hopper asks Joyce to have dinner with him but she turns him down.
Nancy and Jonathan are working for the Hawkins post. The people in charge are all men who make sexist remarks and don't take Nancy seriously.
Steve flirts with a girl at the ice cream store and gets rejected. His coworker Robin mocks him, keeping track of his failures on a whiteboard. It is revealed that Steve was unable to get into college, which is why he is working at the ice cream store.
At the town swimming pool, Karen Wheeler and her friends all flirt with Billy who is working as a lifeguard. Billy observes Karen swimming, clearly interested. He compliments her form and offers to give her lessons at a motel that night. He's obviously not talking about swimming.
Dustin comes home from being at science camp for a month and the others surprise him. He shows the others some machines he engineered at camp including a battery-powered radio tower. He reveals that he has a girlfriend named Suzie, and that the radio allows the two of them to communicate despite her living in Utah. He leads the group to the top of a hill to demonstrate. Mike and Eleven leave, saying that she has to get home. The others set up the radio, but Dustin is unable to connect with Suzie, much to the others' annoyance. They all leave, and Dustin picks up signals of someone speaking in Russian.
Hundreds of rats are seen running to an abandoned factory, writhing in pain, and then exploding. At the Hawkins Post, Nancy gets a lead on diseased rats.
Joyce goes home and heats up dinner for herself, indicating that she did not have any plans that night, despite what she told Hopper. She has memories of being with Bob. All the magnets fall off of her fridge.
Hopper tries to psyche himself up to giving Mike and Eleven the speech he prepared. As he struggles to find the right words, the kids laugh at him, which sets him off. He tells Mike that he needs to get home because there's something wrong with his grandmother. Once he gets Mike in his truck, he threatens him and scares him into staying away from Eleven.
Karen gets ready for her date with Billy, looking somewhat hesitant, but leaving her wedding ring. On the way to the motel, Billy's car crashes outside the factory. An unseen force drags Billy inside.
