a good story, but it lacks a certain spark
Ingrid_Underwater11 June 2023
The film is solid with a good story, but it lacks a certain spark. During my first viewing, I was multitasking and doing chores, so I couldn't fully engage with it. Even after finishing it, I didn't experience any significant emotional impact. I gave it another chance, watching it attentively, but it still failed to resonate with me. The script aims to be inspiring and touching, but it fell short of stirring my emotions. The reasons and motivations behind the main characters' quest to save the city's guitar sculpture was insufficient to convince me of their actions. While the script is sincere in its intentions, it lacks the necessary depth and refinement.

The bowl of feelings choked a little because of the excessive sensationalism and almost no amusement.

Very entertaining

Da Peng did a great job, again. Although there're some bad comments about this movie but I simply don't think those comments are genuine. When you become successful, haters come to you. anyway, this movie really worth your time. Enjoy!!

Enjoyed the movie.

Enjoyed the movie. Lots jokes from the North East of China. If you like the type of comedy from North East of China, you will enjoy this film.

It also remind me some of Stephen Chow's movie, I can see the influence on the Director Da Peng. If anything that can improve, I would say the ending could be a little bit better. Overall, I think it is a decent movie.

City of Rock

Such a pleasant surprise. At times Sewing Machine feels like the clone copy of so many other Chinese comedies over the years, funny in a slapstick kind of way, but fails to transmit anything significant and grows tiring fast, but as the story builds and characters build up you realize it is a film that is simply full of heart. The concept of dream is often a lucid concept that tends to be thrown around in Chinese entertainment, but not here, the tribute the film pays to rock and roll feels real and sincere. Alot of the actors from the film are ones we are familiar with, but under the guidance of Da Peng he is able to piece each of their strengths together to stitch into the Chinese comedy landscape. The film does take time to warm up, but towards the end I have to admit this is one of the better executed comedy I have seen, and Da Peng may be the difference maker in the film industry.

Da Peng should stop making movies
TheBigSick3 October 2017
Admittedly, not every filmmaker is a talent like James Cameron or Steven Spielberg, who achieved huge commercial and critical success upon their directorial debuts. But at the very least, a filmmaker should know how to make a passable or decent film. Nowadays in China, those who know nothing about filmmaking, start directing films and keep producing junk. Da Peng is just one of them.

As for this movie, the story is plagiarized from the 2016 movie "Sing" without much modification, many scenes simply look fake though this is not a fantasy or Sci-Fi movie, and most of the actors are miscast in the sense that they know neither singing nor playing instruments. Da Peng may be a brilliant actor, but definitely not a good filmmaker. Please stop making films.
