Meh... Not Great, But Not Bad Also
neener370715 February 2018
I found it semi-interesting, not as enthralling as other Netflix shows like Dark and Stranger Things, but it was modest show, not amazing, but not bad also. The beginning takes a little while but it becomes more interesting, but some may find that the show tries to cram too much into the story. My interest was only moderately kept with the ever developing story, the mystery itself is intriguing in the first few episodes, but as I said before, I wasn't completely taken by the show. I don't know if I just wasn't the demographic, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

The acting is really hit and miss, the "bad girls" are portrayed kind of campy as they often are in Japanese TV. But most gave an average performance, nothing to be ashamed of. The writing I found to be very sporadic, one moment the pacing is wonderful and perfect, and the next minute its rushing through and over explaining things the next minute. In all, I think it was a very average series, nothing really took me by surprise or sucked me into the world, some might find it interesting, but I found it to only be moderately entertaining.

I wouldn't recommend it but its up to you.

This is like Lost last season

If you want to see this show for the soap opera drama, go all in. If you like the people locked in a room genre, and considers understanding the mechanics of everything around as important as the drama, it will never happen.

12 angry idols.
GiraffeDoor14 October 2021
It took me a while to get through this show.

Very serious, pessimistic reflection of how even the best intentions go sour. Intriguing but it isn't really about the mystery or logistics, it's just a way of propping up a long Socratic dialogue on the subject of justice and sorority. In short: one very long conversation sort of like 12 angry men except it's 12 victims talking about 1 juror.

The episodes are pretty good at not over staying their welcome but you need to be in a robust mood to take them. You eventually get flashbacks but they're not what it's about.

It's hard to really say what this actually about. I suppose...grey morality? The way we betray each other? Sending up the myth of female solidarity?

One thing that struck me is the zeitgeist of female bonding in high school and how the seemingly idyllic masks jealousy and domination just below the surface. How even seemingly the most harmless of company the very darkest of human tendency can cost lives.

There's is a lot to follow and untangle and I won't say it sort of feels like a chore by the end and it really is the process more than the conclusions here.

I have no real idea if this is genius and I just didn't get it, or whether this is just pseudo-intellectual drivel to make adolescent K-pop fans think they're edgy and thoughtful. Or is this a J-pop group? What even is the difference?

There's basically four characters: the smart girl in the glasses, the angry girl with deep voice, the mysterious capture who you wonder about from episode one and everyone else.

Ultimately I am not going to say that this hit the jackpot but it's a lot more watchable than a lot of generic TV dramas out there. The limited settings actually made it kind of neat.'

The final episode is special and I quite admire but I shall say no more here.

No: Mind
mday00818 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD There were so many things wrong with this series that I don't think I can cover them all, but I'll try to cover the major stuff at least. 12 girls are kidnapped and held in a room. They were all taken on their way home from school independently by people speaking a foreign language.

The logistics of taking 12 people from 12 different locations at the same time in daylight and not getting caught would be pretty much impossible, so you just have to accept that if you want to move on. You'll also have to accept that none of their families called the police and had them track their cel phones to the final location where they went offline. Then you'll need to suspend belief that the girls magically got a wifi connection to a network they had never configured that only appeared long enough for them to receive only a single twitter message and none of the other stuff that would have come through in their twitter feed (like worried messages from their parents).

Then you'll have to believe that when a suit of armor falls over with a spear in one hand, they don't use it to pry up the floorboards of the room they are in to help escape the locks that are holding their feet in place. They instead choose to have 10 episodes worth of drawn out conversation that should have been covered in about 4 episodes of flashbacks instead so the viewer wasn't subjected to so much yapping and talking heads.

The largest flaw by far was the way each of them disappeared from their seats. It is revealed that this was all done to them by one of their group so their is no magic or mysticism here. When they disappear, it happens when the lights are out, yet somehow the bank of 15 CANDLES on the wall doesn't illuminate the room during this time!!!!

There is also no noise while they disappear (presumably through the floor) and the locks on their feet cages remain locked even after they are gone. This would require them to have been dropped through the floor chair and all, and because it all happens in less than 5 seconds their chair and lock would have to be replaced with an empty copy of their chair and lock. Except it isn't because water stains remain from the water that comes through before they go away. Since presumably every space in the room is rigged with drop floors (due to the teacher dropping through too when he tries to destroy a camera), this would require an extensive mechanism that would definitely make some noise. There would also be some screaming from the girls as they suddenly felt themselves falling because the whole swap happens rapidly in less than 5 seconds. There is no mechanism I am aware of that could do that without a lot of mechanical noise.

This brainless 'thriller' has so many plot holes it makes Swiss Cheese look solid by comparison.

As a public service this review is warning you to not waste your time.
rgreen7360-849-81192817 April 2018
Whenever I see a movie which wastes a couple of hours of my time, I feel that 2 hours of my life is not enough of a waste to warrant a feeling of being cheated of a substantial portion of my life. But when an episodic piece of crap wastes about 6 hours, I feel at the end of that monumental waste of time that it is my duty to warn others not to make the same mistake I made, and start this completely nonsensical, 12 episodic, snail crawling, hodgepodge of going nowhere dialogue, that only left me feeling angry at the end for putting me through the worst viewing experience I've ever had watching anything. The main sin of this show is the first four episodes are actually fairly good, but at about the 7th episode you're wondering why you started this garbage in the first place. In case I haven't made it clear, this is about the worst tv series I've ever been unfortunate to watch. Skip at all costs.

Still don't understand why people rate 10 star to this
gazingstars17 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Very bad performances, very slow plot. It becames extremely boring to watch each episode because everything they remember is being told by the actors instead of displaying it in images. It's not worth to watch this AT ALL.

Very Japanese, surprisingly good for an idol work
rei30021612 April 2018
I'll say this plainly, if you're an average American who watches mostly American/British television and movies don't watch this series. You won't like it, you won't get it. I'll quickly address the thing I've noticed several Americans complaining about. This show doesn't give a damn about the how any of this happened. How they disappear, how they were brought there. None of that matters, it's completely irrelevant in this kind of story. If you're expecting that kind of realism or explanation, you'll be disappointed. That's not what this show is about. The why is the only thing that matters.

For the actual show, it's surprisingly good for an idol work. The plot had substance, the acting wasn't utterly horrible, and the characters had some depth to them when you get to the later episodes. Since the culprit was rather obvious, I'm glad that they allowed the backstory to take precedence and hold the tension. It was definitely the right call and the story flowed properly without dragging at all. Even better, they kept the motive hidden for most of the show so I actually had something to try to figure out. That made it worth a rewatch. The ending also caught me by surprise, which is a nice change. The credits only made it more bittersweet and sad. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it does surprisingly well as a drama, despite its idol origins.

Honestly, main issue was the flashbacks. I really liked the idea of a show set in a single room and the flashbacks completely killed the effect and spoiled a lot of plot points early. If they were removed, I'd give this a 9 instead.

Many questions and more questions with no answers. Confusing and boring but so confusing that you have to watch till the end and in the end you are still as confused as you were in the beginning if not even more confused.

It's alright
skylsmith20 February 2018
If you like Pretty little liars, you'll love this. This basically involves the typical teenage drama mystery surrounded by secrets. Re:Mind is pretty good in the beginning then falls flat during the middle, and then it finally gets better. There isn't many clues for the viewer to figure out themselves and some important questions never answered, so the viewer is kinda there for the ride. The culprit remains anonymous just long enough to keep you interested. The camera work is really good, there are many beautiful shoots. Even though the story only takes three physical places, it doesn't take away from the story nor does it become boring. Overall, the acting is decent, in the beginning it's not great but it seems improves in each episode. As an american watching this, you can just tell If there ever is a American Version the acting would be would be too cheesy and terrible to watch. Personally, kyoko's behavior cracked me up too much for me to ever take her seriously.

WHat a load of CRAP
rtalk-590797 March 2018
The first 4 episodes, i was hooked. It was creepy, tension filled and loved the concept. then it went DOWNHILL superfast. Lot of talking about high school drama, girlfriend/boyfriend drama, cheating........ and i quickly realized this isnt the show that i thought it would be. But i still stuck with it because i wanted to know the culprit. Dont even bother, ENDING was so lame and nothing really gets answered. Cant believe i wasted time on this. AVOID

I liked it
gwendolyn88 March 2018
I'm a little surprised by all of the harsh reviews. When I saw it on Netflix, I kept thinking how dumb it sounded, but it kept pushing it and pushing it and finally I was hard up for something to watch and tried it and it wasn't bad. I watched it some more and it wound up really growing on me.

I thought that everyone gave a pretty solid performance and that the writing was solid. I was satisfied with the resolution of the mystery at the end (a few things are left unresolved, but most of it is fully explained) and liked the way the writing tied everything all together in the final two episodes.

I love this language so much. Japanese >> English > Everything else.

I probably wouldn't have made it through episode 1 if this were in a different language. The first few minutes of this show do not give the impression of a well-written story. But whatever the reason, I did watch further, and it turned out to be much better than expected. The show has heart. And it also remained surprisingly unpredictable throughout. It's easy to think that you get it a few episodes in, but comes a turn you didn't see coming.

The best part of viewing experience is the ever-increasing sense it leaves you with of just how deep the rabbit hole goes. Everyone seems so shallow at first, until you're shown more and more of what's underneath. The last line of the epilogue was perfect.

Fun diversion ruined by HORENDOUS acting!
divemabini9 January 2023
A cute premise, that had so so much promise. If it wasn't for two things:

1. A terrible and completely unfulfilling ending. I mean, how much more artsy can you try to be? I'm talking episode 12, the real ending. Not episode 13 (Re:Wind) a throw-away waste of 23 minutes.

2. The acting in this show is so bad, I can't even begin to explain how bad it is. I know folks like Japanese schoolgirls for some reason. Sure, some of them are cute, I'll admit it. But casting real schoolgirls (I assume they are) was a BIG mistake. These girls can't act their way out of a wet paper bag. Netflix, when they bought the rights to this show, should have said, "great premise, now let's reshoot the whole thing with actual actresses". Facial expressions, tone of voice, delivery, mannerisms, etc., they screw them all up. One saving grace is the worst 4 offenders out of the whole bunch of horrid actresses are removed early on. But that is small consolation, as your ears will still bleed and your eyes will roll so much, they'll roll right out of your head.

Not good. Big disappointment.

Random tv series got even random
iamadelinnaaa247 March 2018
I was awake tonight and wanted to see what's new and can catch my attention. Said and done. I happen to come across this tv series. Ok. I watch the trailer, seems okish cause I am an amateur when it comes to Japanese *horror* movies and I wanted to give it a shot. Ok. 12 episodes + 1 special, I can live with that, lol. Not too long to get overattached to the roles and not too short to make me wander "the duck am I watching". Of course I kept asking myself that question.

I was surprised to see that it captivated me the very second cause it is a genre of movies/tv shows/videos that I constantly watch so there's no surprise. The surprise came when I finished the series around 3:30 AM and I found myself asking again what have I just watched. I would not call it bad (except for the lack of noises and the absurd way they dissappear when it is clearly that they could not dissappear) bu I would not call it the best also cause it is not.

All in all, we can all agree that if you are an amateur, you can give it a try. After giving it a try, you can state if you enjoyed it or not, cause out there, there are haters that after 5 mins of watching, they say it is stupid.

Very good story
ryanponeill19936 March 2023
Unfortunately this series doesn't explain itself and relies on the supernatural to clear up all the loose ends. Had this show been longer. I don't believe it would have scored so low. The character development and storylines are in depth for each character and there's a full vivid world here. However between info dumping and plot bombardment. They've left very little to know room for practical explanation of what's happening. So focused on the what. That they left out the why and how. A very clever series that is harmed by its own mystery. The set pieces are very carefully set up but the audience is left with a lack of conclusion.

Interesting premise bad execution
aidezofspadez28 September 2020
(No spoilers for this paragraph)

12 high school girls are locked in a room and left to find out why and who locked them in. They decide to delve into their high school history and we learn about some dark secrets the students had which shed light into their capture.

My review in sum: this captured my attention enough to get me to finish it. But I regret that it did.

----------

(Mild spoilers ahead)

----------

I agree with some reviews that the pacing was sometimes good enough to keep me roped in. However, a lot of the time it was dragged out or very rushed. The plot had some very loose ends.

I won't nitpick at the "holes" some people have mentioned because that didn't bother me as much as the pacing and some of the writing - especially how the series ended. I was left disappointed and slightly empty by the ending. This point essentially means I wouldn't recommend this show to people.

I will nitpick something and say that I wish there wasn't as much screaming. Some of the girl's reactions to the horrors in the room were either over dramatic or very drawn out. It made for unnecessarily long and hard to watch scenes.

There were also a lot of padding. Some episodes could have been shorter. This damaged the quality of the narration in this story. We learn about the girl's live almost purely from dialogue as we don't get to actually watch how most stories played out with our eyes. This in itself isn't bad. It could have just been done better. The extended bickering and arguing made me zone out sometimes out of disinterest. And so, it was difficult for me to notice when the girl's went into the story again.

So yeah, this is essentially what I mean by good premise but bad execution. Wouldn't really recommend.

Interesting, suspenseful Japanese drama.
chloeee_mk18 January 2023
Not sure why everyone is being so harsh, I really enjoyed this.

Re:Mind follows 12 girls (all of which are played by members of incredibly popular Japanese idol group Hinatazaka46, known as Hiragana Keyakizaka46 back then). These girls just graduated from high school (if I remember correctly). They wake up in a strange room, and notice that they are stuck in their seats due to their legs being locked in these hole things?? No clue as to what they're called, sorry.

These girls need to uncover the mystery as to why they are there, while one of them supposedly dies every episode. I'm still confused as to whether they actually died or not, but oh well.

Overall, I think this was good, considering it was those girls' first acting roles if I'm correct. Nice Japanese thriller series.

I wasted my 6 hours to watch this awful show. I feel so mad! How can this show is that bad? How can they made so bad show like this? So awful. Don't waste your 6 hours to watch this show!!!!!!!!!!! You will regret!!!!!

Great Japanese TV Drama!
Malvenido15 February 2018
As a lover of Manga and Doramas, I totally recommend this series. If you happened to read/watch "Gantz", you will love Re:Mind.

Questions will not stop coming to your head. "Why is this happening?" "What did these girls do?" "Who is the owner of the house" "Why on earth are the trapped?"

Little by little everything shall be explained to you!

Give it a try. Asian material has a lot of potential.

This is a fair warning to anyone who have recently become curious about this show. It's a waste of time. Stuck till the end to see if it would redeem itself somehow but I was met with complete dissapointement. I guess it's not the WORST but it's definitely not something to sit through if you're looking for a good show

great concept but come on (SPOILERS)
daniellevisuthiphong14 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I admit the concept of this series got me interested enough to watch the whole thing but there are too many plot holes. This series could have been done so much better because the concept is unique and interesting but the acting is awful.

First of all, in the beggining some girls were so calm even though they were literally kidnapped, made unconscious and woke up in a random dining room, my thoughts were.how could you not freak out and be distressed especially kyoko who was trying to sleep and was complaining about the others screaming? also they all had their phones but didn't think to call the police or family but they waited until the 4th episode to do that and how were they connected to wifi anyways??? how would they even know the password?

The main thing for me was their feet being restrained but they were going under the table and sitting back up so easily with everyones chair being positioned the same. And how could you go under the table with your feet restrained without trying to push your chair back so you have space to go under? Also when the blackout happened how did they wipe the candle lights and then light them back up when the light comes back on?

Theres just so many questionable scenes in this series, with the characters being from a jpop group I understand why they would cast them for marketing reasons but come on, even with the bad acting the series would have been much better if it was thought out properly. Also, it would have been nice to have some flashback scenes of when each character (or some) was confessing their sins because it did get a little boring just watching the same setting the whole series.

Worst series I have ever seen
brianstephenmartin11 December 2021
Boring and nothing gets explained so don't bother. Those girls must have rich parents and wanted to somehow get famous this was extremely low budget. People rating this a 10 have got to be relatives and friends of those horrible actors. Boring and ending was nothing.
