A critical look at Silicon Valley "utopia"
benm-417517 July 2018
While the format of this mini-series is easy enough for anyone to watch, it does pose some critical questions to catch the mainstream audience up on academic discussions about Silicon Valley tech startups. It looks at the visions these companies hold, assured that they will make the world a better place, but asks things like "who gets to decide what's good for society?', "should we make innovations with destructive powers just because we can?", "who benefits most from the freedom of online platforms?", and "do we really know what direction we're going with disruptive technologies?".

The second episode features some incredible insight on the Cambridge Analytica scandal, even details I had seen nowhere else (despite all the media flurry). For example, it compares Facebook's vision of making the world better by connecting it to the ethical questions raised as they actually send employees to help the Trump campaign (because they've spent millions of dollars, of course).
