A must-see
mariellealien6 November 2018
Make no mistake, this is a class. It really is Latin History for Morons, and I was glad to be educated. John Leguizamo's dancemoves, impressions and speeches, spiced with the story of his family, really moved me, in between laughs.

I had to google stuff, I added books to my goodreads-list after this, a must-see and an exceptional show.

History for real
barob-519735 November 2018
I'm a white southern boy who witnessed firsthand the genius of John Leguizamo at Raleigh's Goodnight's comedy club. He told us that night he was testing the material for this special. What a truly funny and eye opening quasi lecture he presented. Incredibly entertaining, funny, and informative. Props to Leguizamo on another amazing performance. I highly recommend for anyone, especially some of the more ignorant white MAGA supporters out there (you know who you are)!

As a native Norwegian, who learned all this in school. I'm in awe if this performance. Thanks for refreshing a little of my teen history lessons as well as adding to it. I hope all Amerixan history teacher show this in class! This should not just be mandatory learning in my country.

We all need to watch this.

Warning: Spoilers
I just finished watching this on Netflix and I can't even begin to explain how much the world needed this! So much history was mentioned that I as a Latino had no idea about. I'm in astonished at how much was sacrificed in our behalf to "make this country great". Get ready for a lecture, some laughs, and an emotional roller coaster!

Awesome delivery!

I'm not quite sure why there are all these people saying this was "awkward". If you want a history lesson you can watch a history show or read a book. John provides an entertaining take on the history of Latin Americans. It's a mixture of comedy and dramatic interpretation.

In contrast to your standard punchline stand-up comedian shows on Netflix, this was a welcomed break from the norm. It's a one-man play and was quite entertaining. There's no doubt that it's artistic interpretation and in it he exposes the challenges he faces as a parent and his frustration/obsession with the maligned history Latin Americans have been given.

Yes, you can read Howard Zinn's classic book, and I highly recommend it. But if you prefer dramatic interpretation, this was an entertaining approach!

Interesting Content Cringeworthy Delivery
asliyaseminbahar11 November 2018
Ugh. The information in the show is mostly interesting but his "comedic style", the unfunny and sometimes ableist or sexist jokes, the immature delivery of them... These are just not appropriate for this topic. The "comedy" is bad. Real bad. I will look into the books he mentions in the show and read them instead of watching the second half of this. I suggest the same for everyone.

Brilliant. A must see for people of all ethnicities and nationalities.
nuoptik@mac.com12 November 2018
I'll admit, I put this on thinking it was a another Netflix stand up comedy special, looking for a laugh, and not having heard of the Broadway show. Instead it left me with a wet face - not from tears of laughter. I'm white, but that didn't make this any less pertinent or profound. I always liked John Leguizamo but after watching this he's my favourite new person. It also worth watching his Tony acceptance speech, which left me in tears also.

In this crazy messed up world it's comforting to know that there are voices out there like Leguizamo's. I related to him as a parent trying to do the best one can by his children, and as someone with great love for America even with it's F'd up history (and present).

Do yourself a favour and watch this.

important content delivered annoyingly
mauriciofernandogerhardt5 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you're not adverse to reading, I recommend you read the books that he read to do the show. A lot of interesting history there. But Leguizamo stops the interesting facts often to do "comedic" (it seems like he wrote the comedy, and he's not funny to me) interpretations of events or to tell personal stories about himself, his son, and his family.

This is a MUST WATCH!
gabaum_poa9 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
John Leguizamo is a fantastic storyteller and entertainer with a great topic. I'm a history professor from Brazil and i can confirm that his historic informations are indeed correct. I loved it! I laughed so muuuch! As a gay latin man I was even more pleasently surprised when he danced impersonating a drag queen, because he actually danced a very dificult style of dance created by drag queens called "Vogue Fem" and did justice to all the moves (even the death drop). That shows his respect for the drag culture. Leguizamo's masterpiece of latin history and comedy deserves to be watched! I strongly recommend that you watch as soon as possible!! It's a super funny yet accurate history lesson!

PalmTreeCloud19 November 2018
Why wasn't he teaching me in school? While I laughed a TON I can not believe how much I learned. I laughed. I gasped. I'm writing down authors and historical names. He made me want to look up more. I'm reading and learning and I was ENTERTAINED. I want more like this. Please give us more! 11/10 recommend.

Big fan but historically inaccurate
saag7619 November 2018
I'm a fan of the actor and comedian, but this show does has not have accurate facts or accounts of history, moreover, it's distorts history and it's relevent characters.

Required viewing if you were taught History from an American Text book
giovannip-114 November 2018
Informative (though we did know some of it) Brilliant and also funny. Like the books he his showing his son, that should be required reading in school, so should this show be for all high school children (only so that someone can get upset about the racy content for youngers).

Brilliant stuff! You were taught history from an American History book? then you need to see this! Millions of good "hombres"! like we already knew!

Masterful
nitivia-122 January 2019
His use of props was amazing, his timing brilliantly toeing the line with 'ghetto rage', and while I knew most of the material, I was enthralled with his presentation. He was speaking straight to me, and he had my undivided attention the whole time. It's been a long time since I saw something as masterful as this.

Wonderful
jcjs3335 December 2018
What an awesome use of time to take this in...a kid could go to certain schools in today's world and never know the 'facts'...but, you can happen upon a masterpiece like this on Netflix and learn more than you could in 'school'...i'm an elementary school teacher and i don't like history and have a friend who loves history and knows it well...he loves history because he had good teachers....i saw a teacher 'acting' out the stuff and how the class ate it up because history became real, is real, is now...i like anything John Lequizamo does...there are a lot of notable talented guys out there like Will Smith , Jamie Fox , Denzel Washington , Dave Chapelle , Steve Martin , Eddie Murphy , Robin Williams (has to be #1, eh...and Jonathan Winters) but none more so wonderful to watch and learn from and delight from than J.L.....thanks

Divisive Liberal Propaganda.
eqrangerst12 November 2018
There are nuggets of truth in the show, but the vast majority of it serves no useful purpose and further inflames social tension in America. I can't at all recommend.

La Mala Educación
leftbanker-113 November 2018
As a performer Leguizamo is great; as a historian a moron.

He acts like Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States is big news. It was written in 1980 and actually is read in many schools today. While I applaud his attempt to "educate" his audience, he needs to read a bit more himself. He intimates that Europeans waged biological warfare on Native Americans when no one had any idea about diseases back then. Europeans didn't "give" diseases to America. What an idiotic way to rewrite history! He needs to read Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel. He also needs to stop blaming European civilization for every modern problem in the world today-like he blames his personal problems on his ex-wife's divorce lawyer.

Once again, I'm being lectured to for being white and stupid by a guy who doesn'y know much at all about the history of the indigenous populations of North and South America. He also screams that every European contribution to society is a lie or stolen from some other culture.

The historical content is the only reason why I didn't stop watching 15mins into it. You have to be a fan of his comedy style to fully enjoy this. Cringeworthy but enlightening.
