Movie had potential but had disappointing ending
elvey-3387022 February 2020
Photography was great, acting was fair but story line was weak. The Hispanic border agent made incredibly stupid choices through out the move. I felt the movie was trying to make some sort of political statement . The ending left me disappointed and like it was an unfinished book.

Movie Without an Ending
dianaalejos-552238 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I can honestly say that I was very disappointed with how this movie ended. I felt like I wasted my time and it's the first time I have ever felt this way. I feel like there is supposed to be another movie, a part 2. If there isn't then it was the worst movie ever as far as my liking.

The ending is a given - they take him and will more than likely try to break him and he will probably get killed due to being a moral man. He knew his friend was going to get shot and he stuck to his guns. The only thing it all meant is that he will get the same if he does not break, but they need him to become the eyes and ears that I believe that he will give in and go as he is told. It's a given.

No effort out into the acting
tacotubev16 February 2020
Honestly this movie looked good up until the first couple of minutes when the Hispanic man working for the border patrol spoke Spanish, oh my goodness like why! If his "mom" speaks only Spanish and she has a heavy accent then it's only right if he does too. I honestly clicked off the movie once the Americans were having a shootout with the "Drug Dealers" that scene was just too long and there was little to no cover for the men to hide from being shot at. It was surprising how it took them 5 minutes to take down one of the drug dealers that was shooting at them, the guy was at least 3 feet away and he had no cover. It was a 3 against 1. Honestly if you wanna get a good laugh then watch this movie, I don't think this movie she be taken seriously. But I give it a 2 stars because the script wasn't to bad.

Skip it.

I watched it on Netflix. It looks like they spent some money on this movie. However, the movie dragged and was uninteresting. I fast forwarded half of the movie. The ending also sucked. My recommendation is skip it.

Warning: Spoilers
I watched it all the way through the bs acting just to have it end in the only good part. I guess the money ran out or the cell phone had to be recharged. People who make movies like this should have to watch this crap on repeat for 50years so they feel the pain we went through

A ridiculous film
KDCampbell12 February 2020
Off the bat unbelievable, and not in a good way, and then it get worse. I don't review many movies on here, but I feel like I would be doing a public disservice if I don't warn people against this awful Fox News meets Sicario miscarriage of a movie.

Nice effort here but not very good
Jennsaltg7 April 2020
I saw it on Netflix and thought it looked interesting. I fast forwarded through most of it. The writing could have used a few more passes to keep the plot moving, but it's not a big budget film. Ultimately, don't waste your time.

Gritty and interesting with many angles
nick-3089721 October 2019
Going into the movie knowing it had a substantially low budget, I wasn't expecting much. I was quite surprised to find that the acting was pretty good (VERY good in some cases) and the production quality matched films with a much higher budget.

The overarching storyline is a battle of morals as an upstanding agent is pared off with another with a dark background. Many other facets are present as well, ranging from a very relevant drug crisis to poverty and immigration issues through the eyes of a naturalized Mexican American Border Patrol agent who, at times, finds himself not belonging on either side of the border.

I found the film was able to keep my attention well and not a bad way to spend a few hours.

Ok, so my husband & watched this tonight. Acting wasn't awful, no academies but story line good. But come on!! Where was the ending? Is there a pt2? Before U watch, well gotta prepare urself. At first we thought the power went out as screen turned blk for a moment & boom, credits rolling. We even rewound but nope, it's like they ran out of money & the editor wasn't pd, so he just ended it. Seriously, how ignorant! My 1st & 2nd graders could have found an ending!

Missed opportunity
martin-lynch-713-58171528 November 2021
What could have been good was made virtually unwatchable. The story is ok (betting it was inspired by Sicario) it's hard to pick a good scene because there really aren't any.

The acting... rubber, wooden, abysmal spring ro mind. The only saving grace would possibly be the cinematography, at least they tried but, it really is a case of putting Lipstick on a Pig.

Not worth you time.

Worst movie ever!
morgan_aegis14 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was so bad I'm posting my first review. They must of hired a grade schooler as tactical adviser. Walking on a ridge with no cover silhouetted by the sky. While his team is under cover engaged in a firefight the team leader flanks a suspect and rushes him with a knife. Walk right next to barrels with gas vapors rolling out the top and them using them for cover. Opening a refrigerator door and hiding behind it as a bullet stop when it would be about as effective as cardboard.

The worst movie I've ever watched to the end.

A Gripping Cartel Thriller with a Border Patrol Perspective
zardoz-138 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
If you hate movies with sad endings, steer clear of "Fronteras" (*** OUT OF ****), freshman writer & director Andrew Dean's cartel thriller about a sympathetic Mexican American Border Patrol Agent in Arizona. Our Hispanic hero finds himself out of his league when he joins a government anti-terrorist unit searching for a strange drug called 'Krokodi with a K.' This stuff gets junkies high but it eats their flesh. Dean's provocative movie fuses elements of both cartel thrillers like Stefano Sollima's "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" (2018) and epidemic movies like Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion" (2011). Ambitious, above average, and ingenious despite some long-winded interludes, "Fronteras" maintains enough momentum throughout its suspenseful 105 minutes to keep you interested in its machinations. Dean gives audiences things they've never before seen in a cartel thriller. The unit stumbles onto brazen narcotic cookouts in barrels in the desert. Along the way, Dean shakes things up with his characters. Basically, this R-rated outing amounts to a clash of wills between our naïve forthright hero and a decadent, genuinely ruthless villain. The animosity between virtuous Reyes (newcomer Steve Oropeza) and villainous Ivan Sloane (Steven Sean Garland of "Billionaire Boys Club"), generates the primary conflict in "Fronteras." They are constantly at odds. Not surprisingly, immigration emerges as a predominant theme. The cartels and the illegal aliens censure our hero for disgracing his people. Ultimately, the alarming ending may upset you since it rewards rather than punishes the wicked. Occasionally, heroes don't survive, and villains prevail. Usually, crime doesn't pay in major Hollywood epics. However, "Fronteras" qualifies as an independent, low-budget film. Meaning, it can run risks and flaunt the formula so as to refresh the genre. Contemporary U.S. Border Patrol movies draw their inspiration from Telly Savalas' "Border Cop" (1979), Charles Bronson's "Borderline 1982" (1980), Jack Nicholson's "The Border" (1982), and Kris Kristofferson's "Flashpoint" (1984).

"Fronteras" unfolds in broad daylight at the Mexican & American Border Fence. Reyes and his partner Sully (Wade Everett of "American Beast") are inspecting the palisade when illegals jump them. Wielding his AR-15 assault rifle, Reyes retaliates against an armed illegal who cracked off rounds at him. Meanwhile, Sully struggles fiercely with an obese guy brandishing a knife. Obese guy pins Sully to the ground, and the inevitable happens. Obese stabs him, but he doesn't push his knife in deep enough to kill Sully. Suddenly, Obese abandons Sully and hurls himself at Reyes. Sully shoots Obese in the back as the brute charges an unsuspecting Reyes from behind. Illegal aliens in custody curse Reyes as a turncoat to their people. This brief scene shows an example of the violence faced by Border Patrolmen. Illegals lurk everywhere. Out of nowhere, they attacked Reyes without a qualm and tried to kill him. Director Andrew Dean creates a sense of spontaneity which enlivens the gritty realism of the action. Mind you, Dean filters everything in "Fronteras" through Reyes' viewpoint. Although he is married, Reyes has no children. Reyes' late father brought his family across the border, and they obtained legal citizenship. Reyes serves as a Border Patrol Agent because he wants to help his people. He keeps on doing this, despite their delusions about his racial disloyalty. Reyes is an incorruptible cop who abides by the law. He believes neither nobody nor nothing stands above justice.

Reyes' Border Patrol superior Chief Morris (Randy Green) introduces him to the nefarious Ivan Sloane. Sloane leads a team specializing in foreign and domestic counterterrorism. According to Morris, Washington has dispatched Sloane and company to assist them with a classified level three threat. Sloane has his gun sights set on the Chacal cartel. Washington has learned the Chacal cartel has acquainted junkies with a new, nasty toxic high. Although it has not acquired an official name yet, Sloan's superiors have nicknamed it "Krokodi with a K," owing to the callous lesion "it leaves on the victim's skin." Morris adds that Krokodi rivals the effect of heroin three times over. He tells Reyes that Sloane wants a local face to roll with during his investigation. Morris impresses upon Reyes that his active participation with Sloane must be voluntary. Ostensibly, Sloane wants to thwart distribution of Krokodi into America. Unfortunately, the threat of a flesh-eating virus is never presented as a devastating spectacle compared with Reyes' hostility toward Sloane. Reyes sees Sloane as an amoral, loose cannon, prepared to do break the law to achieve his goals. Naturally, their relationship is abrasive.

Sloane's unit discovers its first victims almost an hour into "Fronteras." Despite the hostility between them, Sloane saves Reyes' life after the double arrest of an illegal father and his daughter. Reyes is poised to share a bottle of water with a little Hispanic girl. Fortunately, Sloane intervenes in time to save Reyes from infecting himself with Krokodi. Later, Reyes grilles Sloane dutifully about the welfare of the father and daughter. Sloane advises Reyes that he has turned the family over to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Predictably, Reyes lashes out because he suspects the treacherous Sloane transferred them in body bags. Reyes has complained repeatedly to Morris about Sloane. Morris calms Reyes with assurances Sloane will leave once he has accomplished his mission. Chief Morris summarizes one of several themes in "Fronteras": "Unfortunately, we live in a time the sun doesn't have to be down for bad people to come out." A suddenly cynical Reyes doesn't share Morris's optimism, and he persuades Sully to join him so they can take down both Ivan and his men.

Happily, "Fronteras" doesn't tackle the contagious doomsday drug which Sloane must destroy because it might have degenerated into a blood and gore B-movie creature feature. Newcomer Steve Oropeza's delivers a sincere performance as a misguided hero. Unquestionably, Steven Sean Garland has a promising career playing villains. The upstairs motel complex scene depicts one of Sloane's vile turns of as patriot. The startling finale in "Fronteras" leaves everything wide open for a sequel.
