a tragedy really
ops-5253523 August 2020
This film couldve been based on many real life stories upon the vast continent of america.

its a farma-drama story, about an orchard farm in the northwestern part of the great state of california, and its as usual the fight for survival, at the mercy of the banks, the threats of conglomeration, and the pressure from property developers who wish to build houses in some of the finest rural areas in the world.. its a young girl against everyone, stubborn and bound to a promise she gave to her grandfather, that she will stand tall and make this orchardry survive for generations.

the production and acting are merely flawless, dramaslow it is, but it surtainly tucks you into the sad emotions that reign this territory. its a film made on a bargain sale give or take a few dollars out of nothing , then youll know its good old craftmanship filmaking.

the sad story isnt for everybody to like, but it should and will find it crowds i'm sure. and that is said in the name of the grumpy old man, a recommend

Centers Around One Character

Story about teenage girl going against odds to save family farm while everyone else tells her to sell. Good film production but lacklustre cinematography. Soundtrack is non-existent except for transitions. However, a complete story arc is there. Act two is a little slow at the start. The ending is good but too quiet.

Material question is at the heart of the plot but messed up at the end
charles18484 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
At the heart of the movie is the question, can this 16-year-old make an orchard work? If her skills and determination were the deciding factors, the answer would be yes. However, inexorable events say otherwise. The ending deprives the viewer of information she needs to settle her own mind about what happened. On one hand, the girl gets a $500,000 "cut" of the sale she does not want. Pretty good start in life! On the other hand, we do not get any idea of what percentage she got.

With a decent ending, the story could have been coherent and the viewer could forgive many of the faults noted in previous reviews here. But without that ending, the whole thing collapses.

Also, homage to identity politics is offensive whether you care about identity politics or hate it. The characters who matter are all white, but the movie makes sure to include a Black and a bunch of Latinos in the scenery. The women characters have some depth; the men are basically one-dimensional jerks. The single male character with some depth turns out to be the worst jerk of all, without real grounding of why.

how did I find the time to waste my life
skywatcher-9824310 May 2021
Could not give this less than one star, so here goes; I am not a sentimentalist when it comes to movies but I would like to see an ending making my time worth while. Kept hoping for some redemption but as the movie progressed nothing made it more worth the time. At the end I think if she could have backed the car up and run over Ryan at least someone could have gotten his just dues.

Take it from me, an appointment with a dentist for a root canal without anesthetic would have been more enjoyable!

Realistic not candy coated
pilsu29 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Realistic without the Hollywood ending tied up with a ribbon. The main character does win, but not in the usual "impossible goal achieved" way. She stays true to herself. She never caves to the Sweet smile of the brown eyed boy who is really not a good person. She lets the bank lender/land developer know how she feels unapologetically. And when she's unable to stop the title wave that's sweeping her orchard away from her, she takes the car keys and drives off into her new future. I don't remember the exact quote, but she turns to her aunt and referring to the multiple frustrations and difficulties says something like, "Does it ever stop? It's suffocating" Her aunt pretty much says no it doesn't. It just keeps piling up. You have to put on your boots and just muck your way through it. Realistic yet inspiring. I really liked it.

Really could have been a great story
dadetail14 December 2022
So an old white man work his ass off and had a profiting orchard that in his later years became not profitable due to changes in the poor quality of life of California

Tried to make it about a strong woman which could have really turned into a good story

Especially if she was successful even though she was also White

By the way I'm being smart it wouldn't have mattered the color of her skin but based on some of the other reviews on here it's just a joke what kind of movie this turned out to be and what it could have been

Really could have been a great story about a strong woman saving a beautiful profitable orchard and pass it on to the family if they're willing to work for it and by the way no matter the color of skin but someone with great character and good work ethic.

Not worth the time
TheNonSmoker10 October 2021
Very hollow empty dramatic movie, not even remotely relatable for a non-american.

Less 'Rise', a lot more of a flop.
Mr_Sophistication_Uk30 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
July Rising sadly suffers from a problem so many films do these days... a thoroughly unlikable lead character. Talk about confusing an 'independent spirit' with 'out-and-out arrogance and ego'. No matter how many difficult tasks it shows her performing around the farm, no matter how many times she 'proves' to men that she's capable of doing things on her own, the fact remains... she's a horrible individual. The screenplay never acknowledges this and frankly chastises us for thinking this way despite all the evidence on offer, and the movie as a whole never recovers from it.

This is a 16-year old girl trying to run a farm all by herself when her grandad suddenly dies so you'd expect to have some sympathy for her plight, but when she treat literally everyone around her (apart from a few Mexican fruit pickers) like dirt, refuses to consider to impracticality of her ambitions of taking over acres and acres of land by herself at such a young age and regularly physically assaults people and theirproperty for the most minor of disagreements, it's very hard to root for such an obstinate, hateful character. Quite some feat, considering the underlying tragedy of the plot.

But rather than trying to help her change and grow as a result of her turning everyone away and never even considering the reality of her impossible situation, the script bends over backwards to accomodate her selfish and misguided worldview. Suddenly, her constant abuse and outright rudeness shown towards her so-called childhood 'friend' (although we never see any genuinely affectionate interaction between them at all) is all justified because he forcibly kisses her, a regrettable action but something which is totally out of the blue with no build-up whatsoever. This scene feels like it was inserted into the movie as a reason for her non-stop aloofness towards him, instead of a natural development of his previous good character. It's intensely irritating, and you get the impression the director is making up these personalities as he goes along instead of giving us any solid traits to go off of.

It gets worse. Her best female pal tries to get our wannabe farmer to come out of her shell, but is rebuffed again and again and judged for wanting more from her life from wanting to grow up in the country with a husband and kids. Later, it turns out our young farmer was 'right' when her now miserable friend falls pregnant to the other male childhood pal I mentioned before. None of these developments feels organic, all our it seems like the makers are literally warping time and space to make our unpleasant protaganist correct in everything she says or does.

Even the young farmer's aunt, who lives in San Francisco and seems practical and sensible when it comes to the possibility of such a young kid running such a huge plantation on her own, has a 180 degree change of heart after a somewhat heavy-handed montage where I guess they 'bond'. She arranges to sell the produce from the farm to the restaurant she works at because grandad died leaving a lot of debts, so I guess this teenage girl can carry on living at the farm alone, and... I'm sorry, in what plain of weird existence would this plan work?

Thankfully, the ending preserves some level of reality once more, but I guess you're meant to be left feeling sad as our young farmer is driven away. She's had to give up everything due to some 'heartless' bankers who are doing their job for their clients and a few country folk who are sick of living in a rural setting and want to move somewhere a bit more populated with left hard work. How terrible they sold up without specifically clearing it with her first!

I wasn't sorry for her at all. I was thinking about the fact that FINALLY this annoying little snit had been put in her place, and that at last she'd learned... gasp... that the entire solar system didn't revolve around her wants and needs. Maybe she would meet some nice blokes where she was going to as well, seeing as the film was determined not to give us any.

Oh, apart from Grandad. But he died. So, yeah. 4/10.

A 16-yr-old girl must make the pear farm in California work.
TxMike15 February 2023
Andy is a 16-yr-old girl living and working with her grandfather on his fruit farm in California, an area in the northern part of the wine country. Her mother is no longer alive, she has an aunt who is a chef in San Francisco. Andy is very handy, a very serious and hard worker that also is able to repair most things that break on the farm. But grandpa has a secret, the farm is broke, it may be on the verge of forced sale.

One evening Andy is cooking dinner and gramps doesn't respond when she calls him. She finds him passed away in his chair. This brings a new hurdle, the land is willed to Andy but being under legal age must become a ward of her aunt. That doesn't go easy as Andy had long ago built up a disrespect for her aunt who she thinks deserted the family and the farm.

The story is mainly about Andy figuring out where she wants to go with her life, and part of that is struggling with her sexual identity. It isn't addressed directly but when a boy, a long-time friend, kisses her later she tells a friend that it didn't feel like anything. My own interpretation is that she was not into boys.

My wife and I watched it at home, streaming on Amazon Prime. It is not a long movie, right about 80 minutes and all the cast are second-tier actors. It has the feel of a made-for-TV movie. While we enjoyed the drama and Andy's working through her struggles we both observed that it ended with no resolution. Except maybe farming is not a good future for a young girl and it took the events to teach that to her. A coming of age.
