Of rubber duckies, ostriches and a birthday girl
Horst_In_Translation29 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"A Kid Called Mayonnaise" is a 25-minute live action short film that can be best described as a mix of family and comedy film and it succeeds from both perspectives I'd say. The director is Oscar winner Luke Matheny and the script is by Emmy nominee Will McRobb. This is another entry to the Amazon Originals series, which means that it will be turned into a weekly series if enough people end up liking it. But it has strong competition and not every entry will make it. I personally think it is weaker than Will vs. the Future, but better than Skyward and I guess I may be curious about a potential first season, but maybe it's just that I like Matheny. Really loved his Oscar-winning short film too. Back to this one here: It was a pretty creative little film and I liked the inclusion of animals (ducks, turtles, ostriches). The characters are somewhat interesting, even those that do nothing but stare or spit in a bag and it was also a good watch visually. Reminded me of Moonrise Kingdom a bit at times. But I also have some criticisms. Honestly, the material felt to me as if it would really be more suitable for a 100-minute movie, but maybe not for a recurring television series. And I thought the birthday girl was maybe slightly miscast. Then again the character really does almost nothing except being there. It's all about the boy here. As a whole, a decent little film, felt very creative at times, but maybe the wrong choice of format here if it really gets picked up.

Please continue Mayo's story!
kristinality19 September 2017
My 8 y/o daughter and I watched together and we had some great laughs! The story is quirky, which is what I love. Left me questioning what will happen next with Mayo and his friends! There are so many cookie cutter shows for kids nowadays -- please continue this show and give us who crave something different a place at the table! I've followed Elliott's career journey to present day and he's a remarkable kid. I know he will breathe life into Mayo! Let him show us what he can do please!

Charming and funny
justineburt3 September 2017
I found this show to be very cute and funny. The characters were charming and I want to know more! It's a show for the whole family, reminiscent of other family comedies but totally unique and quirky. The actors did a great job, though totally unique characters they were believable and compelling. The cinematography was really well done. I do hope they make a full season!

Strange and not for kids
bjames-3186916 September 2017
While I liked the color, LA suburb culture and photographic work, this is a bit strange for kids and way too slow. There's really not a lot going on which is why there is a lot of running in slow-mo. It's like watching paint dry. On the positive side, it kind of reminds me of the movie Paris Texas. Like the mom character, but the lead boy's character is just a little odd. Can't see it gaining a big following.

Very reminiscent of early Pete and Pete
davidgutierrez-104432 September 2017
All in all I really liked this new take on the classic storytelling style that Will Mcrobb used on my all time favorites Pete and Pete. It's a fresh take and filled with the same quirky characters were used to. Really brought back all those wonderous childhood memories. As usual the music is great and simple guitar stuff. Definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of his previous shows.

Weird

Warning: Spoilers
A Woman, "Stray Animal Lady", "Stray Cat Lady", Inherited the Hotel "Alamo".

Her longtime Guests are beyond "Strange". A small girl guides Guest's Vehicles to parking spaces wearing a Full Sailor Suit. A Guest and her Son Donate Spit (Saliva).

A while ago a Baby was left in a Mayonnaise Box, so she named him Mayonnaise "Mayo".

All kinds of animals were previously left at the Hotel, so this time a full grown Ostrich is left at the Hotel Alamo.

A Girl on a Float (there was no Parade) waves at Mayonnaise, so he, "Mayo" is helped by "Candy" (Spelling) to find the Girl wearing some kind of "Birthday" ("Princess Dress") Dress.

A very long time ago, 1970s, U.S. Army Drill Sergeants used to say that "The Only Things that Come Out of California, Are Fruits and Nuts". This "Pilot" from Amazon, seems to fit that description, unlike the other Two "Pilots" from Amazon, that were simply Amazing, Skyward 2017, and Will Versus the Future 2017.

Lovably quirky and engaging tween dramedy
johnaamiller2 September 2017
Found this story line to be a refreshing and unexpected journey into the life of a young boy, Mayo. I viewed this pilot 3 times as I wanted to make sure it was OK for my son,(12 years), which it is and then I watched it with him and then we were telling my mom (80 years) about it and she wanted to see it and loved it. Great to find something we all liked and can watch together. With each viewing the story did not diminish, it grew. Don't know if this was based on the writer's real life, but the story and the actor portraying Mayo really bring to life the wonder, curiosity, pure love and sarcasm that only a tween boy can exude. My vote is to take this further, there are plenty of pearls to work with.

Quirky and Fun!
McCartney-Brian4 September 2017
My 11-yr old kid was looking forward to seeing this when we first heard about it. She deemed it "quirky and fun." She especially likes the idea of a kid actually named Mayonnaise and now wants a pet ostrich and porcupine, of course. The characters were all really unique. We hope to see more episodes soon involving lots more silliness and relatable inner monologues.

Adorable and refreshing
laura-75-48872119 September 2017
Absolutely, adorable and refreshing!! Nothing like anything that is on TV! Exactly what kids television needs! It's a very quirky, out of the box, fresh take on a kids show but with adult humor in there as well. I laughed out loud on multiple occasions. Also beautifully shot and an amazing soundtrack!

Super Fun and Quirky
mickdansforth27 December 2021
It was part of 2017's Amazon Pilot Season with Skyward and Will vs The Future.

After being gone for years, currently Mayo and Will vs The Future are back on Prime Video. I rewatched and loved this show again.

This is an extremely quirky show that revels in being weird.

Brooke Markham is really great in this. She's also in the CW's In The Dark. (I enjoyed the first season but haven't been back.)

This would have been an amazing show had Amazon took it to series.

Finally watched the pilot (4 years late)
booksnbooks-1233814 October 2021
I do have to say that this was missed opportunity for amazon prime. The storyline was really good and I'm disappointed that it was never picked up for a full season while it had so much potential. I wish they can redo this series by reworking the script a bit and recasting.
