Interesting concept that falls apart in the end.
cruise0131 December 2020
3 out of 5 stars.

The Honeymoon Phase is a fair science fiction thriller film. About a newly wed couple going into an experiment trial. As the company observes how the couple are reacting towards each other for a month. They are given a house. Food. Furniture and supplies. Until the wife starts questioning if her husband is lying to her.

Interesting concept and plot. Could have been so much more. The script does fall apart by the time it reaches its third act. The writer feels like they ran out of ideas on where to go. When the twist is revealed which is surprising. But it falls so quick that it ruined the whole movie. Especially the ending.

The cast did decent with there performances. The direction was okay. The script and ending kind of wasted a good idea to having an uninspired shocking ending.

That ending
Films_McGee22 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A mediocre film that turns into a horrible one by the third act. It was a missed opportunity, they could have made the main story more of a mysterious sci-fi thriller but instead focused mainly on the relationship. Then in the final act you get everything at once and was delivered poorly.

Fake reviews
mjsreg25 September 2020
I give this one star because of the obviously fake reviews.

It is exasperating that producers/directors/or whoever resort to this stupid tactics. A film is expected to stand on it's own merits, and if whoever makes film can not tolerate public opinion then they shouldn't be in the business.

if public opinion is poor then filmmakers should learn from it and improve their art - not try and create some false delusional perception they have of themselves.

Poorly written and executed
ravencorinncarluk24 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really should have read the reviews before bothering to waste my time on this. It's not just bad; there's something almost offensively bad about the whole thing.

The sci-fi experiment is pretty generic, and it's obvious something isn't right when they sedate the main character. When the big reveal comes that it's all about scanning memories to implant them in clones because of some vague throw-away line about monarch butterflies having genetic memories....it wasn't even worth a heavy sigh. Such a letdown.

However, that's not what's the truly worst part of the movie. The writing is what really kills this. The characters are pretty crappy, and neither of them seem to know how to be in a relationship, and the writer is clearly trying to use them to make statements about togetherness and partnerships.

But I don't know if he's ever actually dealt with human beings, because he clearly doesn't know how they behave.

The husband's obsessive want for a child and sabotaging condoms is so forced and arbitrary and out of nowhere, and smacks of the writer attempting to show how vile the patriarchy is. The husband actually goes crazy picking baby names, and ignores anything the wife has to say.

The wife is so bothered by having a child - though she never says more than "we're not parent material" to explain her position - that she attempts to self-abort with a hot curling iron, rammed into herself at an angle that wouldn't even penetrate. Does the writer think that's how anatomy works? Or that she would go to that extreme before trying anything else?

It's utter garbage, and I took away a few stars because of the obvious lies in some of the reviews.

Could have been good
theunholy-126 August 2020
Even though this movie is far from being the first of its kind, there's potential at the beginning for something a bit original. Sadly, it soon turns out the story needed much more work. The ending is ridiculous.

Don't get fooled by the 10/10 reviews, they're all coming from new subscribers who are obviously here on a mission. Some of their nicknames are even related to the movie in a way or another, like johnjcarroll-61039 or bcarroll-37501 (Phillip G. Carroll Jr. directed the movie). Couldn't be more obvious...

Released the same year, Vivarium is in my opinion a much better attempt.

Just a very stupid film
Not too much to say here, bad movie, poorly acted, twists are either poorly built or clearly telegraphed. decently shot!

pretty funny to see the positive reviews from people with the same last name as one of the stars

Interesting Concept, Especially One During a Pandemic
Reviews_of_the_Dead8 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was a movie that I heard about when the writer/director reached out to me about reviewing. I'm always up for reviewing independent films, especially with trying to fill out my top horror films list for that year. This does fall as a 2020 release due to only playing a festival in 2019 as well. The synopsis here is struggling young lovers, Tom (Jim Schubin) and Eve (Chloe Carroll), must endure a 30-day scientific experiment. Room, board, $50,000 and a month alone together in research facility housing, what could possibly go wrong?

We start this off with Tom as he's talking to a camera. This is interesting as he's upset as it appears he lost his wife on their wedding night. The movie then shifts us to seeing a cityscape that is mirroring itself. They come together as they approach a large building.

Our couple of Tom and Eve meets with the director of this project, François Chau. He is trying to decide if they're right for the experiment. Eve is working to become a US citizen and Tom is a struggling author. He's been hit with writer's block, but Eve is supportive. Their goal is for him to make it and her to do the covers as well as promotional material. This experiment pays them $50,000 as the synopsis states and that could really help. They are a little bit nervous about what they're going into so they come up with a safe word of 9/23.

They wake up in an amazing house with futuristic clothing on. Over the breast of the shirt is their name with a barcode. They're also not the only couple doing this, but they're separated into their own houses as couples. Since I realize I haven't went into what the goal is here, it is to see the honeymoon phase of the relationship can last forever. There are a lot of divorces and the director wants to see if that can be altered by looking at data. To keep record, a handler is assigned to them, she is Tara Westwood.

Things don't go as planned though. Eve gets upset with Tom that he doesn't seem to want to write. He claims that it is writer's block. He is also quite obsessed spending all of this time with her and to start a family. He thinks they should have a child. Eve doesn't think that is feasible since they have no way of supporting this idea. They also aren't married. Not that it necessarily matters, but their lives are in flux.

It gets even darker when Eve starts to suspect there's something off about Tom. He doesn't kiss her as he used to do. There are some memories that don't really match up, including that he doesn't remember their safe word. It doesn't help when the handler warns her about Tom. The question then becomes, she is being paranoid or is there something else going on here?

That's where I want to leave this recap of the movie as that gets you up to speed without going into spoilers. What is interesting is that I caught a line in another review that this movie is coming out the same year as Viviarium, as they are following similar stories, but of course giving it to us in different ways. I do agree here about the similarities and that it is interesting that they're getting released in the same year.

What is intriguing for this movie is the relationship that we have here. Both sides are bringing their issues to the table. Eve really wants to be with Tom. Both are worried this experiment could hurt their relationship for good reason. Being stuck with someone for 30 days without contact with anyone else could legitimately make or break a relationship. It is interesting is that I saw this after the pandemic started and I think many people have. For me, I moved in with Jaime during this time so even though it isn't the same, there are parallels.

I've heard many people say you truly don't know someone until you go on a trip with them or you spend large amount of time with someone. Without going into too much detail, Jamie and I tend to bicker the longer we spend time together. I couldn't imagine only spending time with her for 30 days. That is bit much, but it is interesting though for this experiment. I like the idea of Eve descending into madness from this. She thinks that Tom is acting differently. I think an issue here though; we don't necessarily get that baseline for us to see that completely. The handler revealing little things definitely helps there. I don't want to say this is a misstep, because it isn't. The film seems to be intentionally showing us it this way so we think Eve could potentially be crazy.

For me though, I feel this movie loses some momentum as it goes on. I liked the characters that we're given, their issues and getting into the experiment. I even like the steady change that comes over them with little things that starts the madness. The problem that I take from the movie though I lose interest after the stuff with Christmas and what follows after that. The ultimate reveal at the end really didn't make a lot of sense to me. The reveal at the end was fine, but I wasn't along anymore for it to change my mind.

I want to shift this over to the acting here. I did like Carroll in this main role we get her in. It took me a bit to realize her accent, which I love. After figuring that out and her dynamic of not being a citizen becomes interesting for me. From my knowledge, if she gets married to Tom, she gains citizenship. Having a child would help as well. I love her practicality though to their situation and questioning Tom about the changes he wants to make for a family. Schubin was fine, but I feel there was some overacting on his part. There were a times where I just didn't care for his performance. I will say in his defense, he is taking on a difficult character in having to show the duality. Westwood, Chau and the rest of the cast I thought was fine in rounding this out for what was needed.

The last thing I really want to go into would be the effects. The opening credits and the look of room for the interview with Tom worked for me. I thought the holograms looked solid and the futuristic place they are staying. I'd even say the blood we get looks good for the most part. Where it doesn't is with the CGI there. We get some blood spray that looked like it was done with computers. I noticed that and I wasn't a fan. Aside from that, I'd say the cinematography was good as well.

So now with that said, I do think there are some really good aspects to this movie. The characters bring some real worries and wants to a situation that really makes things worse. I like the isolated feel that we get where they are 'trapped'. The acting is on the positive side for the most part. If I did have issues is that it does lose me as things get revealed to the point where the ending didn't have too much on an impact. There is also some CGI that doesn't really hold up for me either. I still am positive side of this movie and find it to be over average for me. It is still quite interesting and would recommend giving it a viewing if these things sound interesting.

Some how the guy's haircut isn't the worst part about this film. Build up for quite literally the worst ending possible.

maybe, experiment
Kirpianuscus23 April 2021
An embroidery of genres and twists, having desire to be , in same measure , Sci Fi, thriller, horror, psychological. And becoming only a sort of experiment about an experiment , with indulgence. A couple looking for money, a room, game of apparences and few dramatic touches. Hologrames, tests, surviving cameras, discover the other as stranger and a lot of white. The architecture as only good reason to see.

Different idea from anything else I've seen. I like how they switch back and forth from who's the villain. Definitely fooled me. I actually wished the plot played out longer before it ended.

Disturbing movie, but good
alexscg27 February 2021
I found this movie good, but very disturbing. It just had me sitting there and thinking about it for a while afterwards. How well do we know someone we think we do? We've seen movies like this before. And they are kinda creepy. Not sure why people are giving it a low grade. It is a decent movie - a lot worse movies got higher ratings. So, in my opinion you can see it.

This is incredibly idiotic from its inception, delivery and execution. The acting is poor and none of the cast were good enough to make this film any thing more than being watchable.

There are good and bad. Depends on what you like and what you expect from a movie.
jseynopsis27 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie I struggle about the ratings I should give. So I decided I should break it down as below and calculate the average score.

Story Plot (6/10): It has a plot that caught me by surprise. Initially I thought it was a story about couples living their lives together, and the challenges they face. But apparently, it has a twist to it, it's more about the man in charge of the experiment trying to map memories of his dead wife into its clone.

Casting & Acting (2/10): I think with better casts, the movie can be more convincing & enticing.

Ending (4/10): While I wanted to give a 5/10 because I believe the ending wasn't about whether it's good or bad, but rather it's about whether the audience would like a happy ending or sad ending. My personal choice was, I didn't like the ending, thus giving a 4/10.

The film begin with good start and interesting idea, but finally iam very disappointed with the ending, it leads to a reasonably predictable conclusion which is very disappointing in such an otherwise enrapturing movie.

Omg omg whaaaattttt?? Warning: Spoilers
The only positive thing I can say is that I have Adult onset ADD and this movie was so bad it kept my attention the entire time- granted most of the time I was saying huhhh what? I just don't get the clone thing ? Huh the accelerated pregnancy? What ? Why ? And wait - if she was a clone where was her body or her ? Please don't try this at home. But ty for keeping my attention By the way 30 days doesn't cover how long two people would get bored etc I've been with my boyfriend a year and a half and we would not have had enough time in 30 days to desecrate the place - wink wink nudge nudge

Solid debut showing much promise in the future
workobeyfilms23 August 2020
I adamantly follow many indie horror filmmakers online and became acquainted with The Carrolls' work on YouTube as far back as 2016. Having been heartbroken many times from seeing many short film filmmakers climb that 'feature film mountain' and not quite stick the landing, I'm always nervous to see anyone's debut features, but I'm wholeheartedly relieved 'that ember' I recognized in them is a 'warm and fiery arrival' to the big stage. Their shorts throughout the years has always been of quality, but their debut reaches an additional tier of polish and effective storytelling that deserves recognition, that 'glass ceiling' many of us horror filmmakers aspire to breakthrough. I truly feel they've 'arrived' and are contenders with much promise that, in the long-term, many will find much thrills and enjoyment from.

A good film memorable for its ending
danielprinn26 August 2020
That puzzle comes to play in the third act, which is brilliant. I won't dare spoil and I liked this film throughout but the twist brings it close to being "great." The direction it takes is surprising and it doesn't feel like it comes out of left field as there are hints sprinkled throughout. There's nothing worse than a twist that comes out of nowhere and doesn't feel earned. The Honeymoon Phase lines up its dominoes perfectly during its set-up and the film earns the surprise as every piece of the puzzle falls into place.

What was the point?
aunwin20021 March 2021
It started out with a good synopsis and was interesting for the first 45 mins then it all went down hill very quickly. The acting becomes pretty horrible around half way through and the ending is just ridiculous and pointless which offers no explanation to what's happening and leaves you wondering what was the point of the whole movie. Very poorly executed and a waste of 90 mins on the aircraft I could have otherwise spent sleeping!

The Honeymoon Phase is a good indie sci-fi thriller, although definitely dark. The actors are all terrific, especially Tara Westwood as The Handler and Jim Schubin as Tom.

Til Death do us part ... right?
kosmasp11 March 2023
No pun intended - how long can the honeymoon phase be going? How long can you ride the high of being married together, before realizing something about your partner you may not like that much? And what does the locality do to you? Well there are many questions here - some are phrased better than others. And the location or rather the test program adds quite the flavor to the mix.

We know something is wrong - the poster alone gives away that much. We can guess what it is and maybe we are right. Or we just let the movie entertain us, as best as it can. This is a low budget effort and the actors are doing their best ... I'd say it is quite neat. And while not everything makes sense ... the final twist really is ... well it will make or break the movie for you. I think you can see it coming. I've seen worse to be honest.

Horrible on so many levels
controidcreative20 March 2021
This movie is so offensively bad that I had to write a review in hope of saving someone's precious time. The only reason why I gave it a score of 2 instead of 1 is because the film crew bravely showed up on the set even with a script like this.

First of all, the script is dreadful. Human beings don't act like human beings, character motivations are unclear at best, and one of the two main characters is pretentiously A WRITER. Even if you consider only the latter, it's enough to destroy this flimsy storyline.

I won't tell you about the plot, not because I don't want to give you spoilers (an unknown entity that never interacted with humans would be able to see through it in seconds) but because it's not worth explaining. If you want a similar premise but much better execution, go watch "The One I Love" (2014).

The acting is terrible, I hated both of the characters throughout but, I guess, you can't do much with this script, really.

Overall, if you enjoy similar movies, watch "The Invitation" (2015) or "Coherence" (2013). Or even just stare at the wall and your imagination will come up with something better.
