A Grand Day Out
Prismark1013 September 2021
Set in 1994 as Parliament was debating the lowering of the age of consent of gay men from 21.

Fionn Whitehead plays 17 year old Andrew. A young gay student who has travelled to London on what might be a historical day.

There was disappointment as the age was lowered but to 18 and not 16 and be in parity with hetrrosecual relationships.

For Andrew there is disappointment, there was a scuffle with the police after the vote.

The aftermath led to Andrew having a relationship with an older man. A relationship he might not have had if the age was lowered to 16.

The title A Grand Day Out alludes to the Wallace & Gromit animation. It turns on the unexpected outcome for Andrew and later a realisation that he might appear on a news clip on television.

Fionn Whitehead really captures the frustrations of gay men in mid 90s Britain. That the Establishment really hated them. Then there were figures like Lady Olga Maitland who really had it for anyone not straight enough for her liking.
