This is the mafia, so it's not surprising the protagonists aren't going to get along all the time. They're only cooperating out of self-interest, not friendship, so when self-interest means doing something that's awful for another, there won't be much hesitation, apart from maybe with Gabrielle, who really doesn't belong in the business at all. Spadino lets Aureliano live even though he killed his cousin, putting aside loyalty to his family and to his cousin in favour of what he will gain from working with Eureliano in the future. Then again, maybe there is some affection there. It must be hard to be loyal to a family that forces him to marry a girl despite his homosexuality.
Meanwhile, it's fascinating to watch all the corruption lies and double-crossing in the attempts by each party to own the piece of land.
