A fascinating look at corruption

Warning: Spoilers
Now that the characters are more familiar, this episode gets more into the meat. Despite all being partners in crime, the main characters are portrayed in a human way, with sympathetic qualities as well as nasty ones. The most violent one looks like he doesn't enjoy the violence he wreaks, rather he can't control himself and feels insecure. There's some hope that he has morals when it turns out he let the hooker live. No such hope for Spadino, who has a cruel streak to him. Is his unnerving smile when he intimidates people real, or just to give him confidence? He elicits a little sympathy when he is forced to marry Angelica, even though he is gay. How he deals with it isn't fair on her though, so he's the least sympathetic of the three for me.

The part of the story focused on most is the blackmail of the priest, which is pretty disgusting on the part of Spadino, Gabrielle and Aureliano. Though no doubt a dishonest person, he's put through a lot of torment. The best part of the episode for me were the suspenseful moments when he was wandering around Rome's streets trying to shake off Spadino and Aureliano.

There are other issues explored too; the new uncorrupted politician so full of ideas quickly succumbing to those who would corrupt him. He probably faces the same dilemma all these supposedly incorruptible politicians face, coming into politics with a naive view of how it works but realising that no one cares about his ideas. The only way he can get any influence is by receiving gestures in return for favours. He's made a calculation, but can he climb up the ladder without forgetting why he got into politics in the first place?

The only thing I really didn't like was that while the soundtrack is decent (despite being rudimentary) it became brash at one point.
