Too many allowances given for Indie films
alknorr16 October 2021
Why do reviewers always feel the need to give allowances for indie and small production films? If the movie is not good, just say so.... why the "for an indie project" caveats ? Does this movie reak of garbage ? Not quite, it does have its moments, but if this were a big studio production you would not be seeing any 7s, 8s, and 9s given to it. There would be many paragraphs pointing out the flaws.

Good could have been great
nicci197221 March 2022
It rarely happens for horror movies on here. Most of the time horror movies are under rated on here but this one was definitely over rated. 7 is not accurate - IMO. I was intrigued and I wanted to know what was going on but there were some elements that weren't needed at all. Then some flashbacks we're improperly placed. It wasn't 10 which is a movie I can watch over and over. And it's not a 1 - a wooden film with no plot, acting and film skill of me (I have no skill). But a 7 is generous. 5 is my vote.

Very Disappointing, to say the least
jnkuna16 October 2021
I only decided to watch this movie because I saw that it had a 6.7/6.9 rating from IMDB. Throughout the movie, I questioned that rating a lot because this movie is really bad. As a horror fan, it's possible that I'm being to unfair on it but this movie honestly can't compare to most horrors released this year. There are so many instances where the main character seems more like a zombie than someone who is possessed. There's music in all most every scene and that removes all kinds of suspense. I wish I could get my data back.

Disastrous
wujianzhongtimothy6 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It confounds me as to how this film made it to the box office when its lacklustre quality should have seen it confined to a direct-to-video release. The film tells a poorly written story completely lacking in anything compelling enough to even remotely engage the audience or drive the plot forward. It's amazing how the storytelling was as just as bad as the story itself. Coupled with lacklustre performances from the actors, poor cinematography, shoddily crafted special effects and horrid direction, it is an all round disaster. Despite being listed as a horror movie, at no point of the film had there been a successful attempt to incite any form of fear or tension. Perhaps the scariest part was when the film had ended and I realized I had spent one and a half hours watching what was objectively the worst film I had ever watched and probably the worst I will ever watch. One day this film will end up on DVD available at some obscure video rental store, left under a pile of other DVDs that haven't sold in months, years, or decades even. I can only hope no unsuspecting person picks it up and has to end up enduring the same experience I have.

WORST MOVIE EVER
nfarasha19 March 2020
Do not watch this movie. Waste my time and money. Actors was not really great. Not scary at all. Boring. Buildup was very slow, took 30 mins to introduce the actors and background. Low Budget Production.

Worst Horror Movie Watched
shanxiancheow23 March 2020
The scenes are jumped quickly. scares are expected and predictable. A lot of cut scenes, can be quite confusing. Low Budget movie overall. Props used are of poor quality. Effects (moving of chairs, flickering of lights, eye contact lenses of scarers) are all obviously staged and artificial. (I could literally see the contact lenses and strings to make effects).

The plot of the story is poor and doesn't link up. It's not interesting at all. Wouldn't recommend anyone to watch it.

Based on a true story, my butt!

Warning: Spoilers
Are you kidding me? Really? My wife saw this trailer and saw a high rating by IMDB...which by the way, IMDB, I blame you for losing and hour and a half of my life. ANYWAY...a few jump scares here and there, but other than that, NOTHING! It's truly as bad as I thought it would be, but I'm a slave for my wife's pleading eyes. I agreed and 30 minutes into it...I regretted it. A man gets a job at a funeral home and starts experiencing supernatural events. Want to know more, hell no. Watch the movie, but I'm warning you...DON'T. It sucks hard. Peace.

High Ratings are given by the producer's relatives I guess.

Pathetic movie. I don't understand the constant eerie music always playing in the background even if it doesn't justify the scene. Watched for first 25 minutes. Got headache. Recommend this movie to your pathetic boss in office. Will be sweet revenge for you.

Decent Horror Movie
ub-9062824 October 2021
Don't go for the reviews just watch it, a decent Horror Movie with a good heart touching storyline. It's not so scary like Evil dead or Annabelle but definitely interesting storyline and not so complicated.

Not a good movie
armandraithaqua17 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, i've watched a lot of horror movies, and it has become a ritual that every sunday night, it's horror movie night. So when I saw the reviews on this movie, my expectations were high.

But it is really disappointing. Nothing is "horror" like, no jumpscare, no eerie music, no apprent plot that would justifiy a semblant of supernatural forces. I mean if I was the director, the scene where the girl is being hit by a car, I would have put it in the beginning of the movie, to maybe get an feeling of understanding of the reason and so on.

The main actor is good and I hope to see him again, but the movie is bad, really bad.

The photography and scenery (mainly in the cemetery) is nice though, so 2 points for that.

A compelling story
kellhouse20 October 2021
I'm not normally into the supernatural genre but I don't mind a good psychological thriller which other reviews indicated this was.

I was not disappointed.

Whilst definitely sprinkled with edge of your seat moments, the overall story was very compelling and somewhat thought provoking. A good thinking persons scare .

Of course, all reviews are personal opinions but highly recommend that you watch this movie yourself. Like me you might be pleasantly surprised.

A good Halloween watch.

campy low budget horror comedy
Horror_Flick_Fanatic25 October 2021
I was baited by the trailer but disappointed by the film. I thought based on some of the special effects in the trailer that it would be a serious horror flick but it turned out to be another campy low budget horror comedy. Not funny at the comedy.

An okay movie with horrible writng....
Dottsylove18 October 2021
In parts. Just as an example the lead character has suffered an injury and the one who cares for this person the most apparently doesn't know what an injury is and that it needs tending too. Also, there is a back and forth in the timeline that doesn't work at all. Story follows an East Asian man as he looks for a job and unwittingly helps out a vengeful spirit. Not much more than that sadly. It's an okay movie because the lead is an East Asian while everyone else is white -- sorta refreshing but still only a 5.1-5.3 out of 10.

This is a professionally made movie that is completely ridiculous. Presumably there was, at some point, a comprehensible screenplay worth funding? Good try Australia.

A masterclass of how not to
I can understand low budget as a genre itself, but low creativity, bad acting, terrible CGI, dumb plot and lazy writing aren't a genre but a movie disgrace. As we say in Spanish: fueron los 80 minutos más aguados de mi vida.

Extremely disappointing
Mister-Creeper19 October 2021
I was really looking forward to watching A WRATHFUL SOUL. I hadn't heard or read anything about it prior to coming across its trailer; that's not always a bad sign because I've watched and loved many independent horror films that I've known nothing about prior to viewing. The background music and edited together scenes in the trailer make this look like a pretty good supernatural horror flick from Australia. And I love a good Australian horror film. I wish there was a bigger selection of them. Which sadly brings me to say just how extremely disappointed I was with this one. Maybe watching the trailer just got my hopes too high. But if I hadn't came across the trailer, there's a good chance I would have never known about it - which doesn't seem like a bad thing in retrospect.

I don't feel as though I need to go into great detail about why I was disappointed. It just didn't grab my attention the way a good movie generally does. It rather boring. So if you are looking for a good Australian horror film, I would suggest skipping this one. But here are some good (some great) Australian horror movies that I do recommend: WOLF CREEK 1 & 2 (obviously), NEXT OF KIN (No, not the Patrick Swayze one - it's not Australian. I'm talking about the 1982 film that many people consider a cult classic), ROGUE (awesome man-eating crocodile movie), THE BABADOOK (dook, dook), THE LOVED ONES (Yes, it's good), UNDEAD (pretty cool zombie carnage & comedy), BLACK WATER (more croc action), DARK AGE (even more croc action), and finally, STORM WARNING... just to name a few. Oh, and I absolutely love HOWLING III: THE MARSUPIALS (yes I know most people hate it, but it's my third favorite HOWLING movie right after HOWLING II and HOWLING V).

See the Movie, not the reviews
aussieniks12 April 2020
The problem with Australian films is few watches it and problem with Independent Australian films is no one even talks about it. This film may not be a big budget, big banner and big star cast film and yet it is a class of it's own. Here you will see real cast and crews working hard not for big money but for chasing their passion and when something is done passionately the results speaks. I am not going to write a lot about the film because you got to watch it for it's wonderful art of storytelling, superb direction and some great acting. The story will hold you with anticipation of what is next. The true art is in the cinematography where everything unfolds and so wonderfully captured.

Honestly just watch it.

GOOD AUSTRALIAN HORROR FILM
madnitr3 November 2021
Good film, great music composition and brave direction. We all have our way of telling stories and congrats to team Aiyai. Allowing and giving opportunity to fresh cast is very encouraging. The film made on tight budget has done its job.

Superb Australian made Psychological-thriller film. Worth a watch!
samsidhu-4872320 October 2021
Just finished watching this psychological thriller film and thoroughly enjoyed it. Shot in Australia and based on true events, this film provides edge of the seat suspense and mystery which gets the audience hooked from start to finish. Great Acting, Direction, Cinematography and Music all round. The visual effects in this feature are quite impressive as well. Highly recommend watching if you're a fan of the horror/thriller genre!

Do not sleep on this film.
malachi_grimsley30 March 2020
The only wrong with this independent film is the fact no one is talking about it.

The writing, acting and cinematography all are superb, it the direction from Alan that makes this film what it is; exciting and dark.

One of the best supernatural thrillers I've seen. Since Hereditary.

See this Film.

Aiyai punches well above its weight!
kaushik35029 March 2020
Aiyai is a riveting horror thriller, masterfully crafted by up and coming directed by Ilanthirayan Alan Arumugam. It proves once again, the horror genre does not need a hollywood budget to be effective. The cinematography deserves special mention. This is definitely not one to be missed by underground and mainstream horror lovers alike.

A Brilliant Psychological Thriller
cosdog8529 March 2020
This story offers a lot of twists while giving the viewers on a roller coaster of a journey in the realm of the supernatural.

It is a dark and gritty take on the more cerebral, darker aspects of the human mind while having a surrealist influence.

The camera work gives you a real sense of immersion in an almost voyeuristic way, which definitely suits the story.

The actors are well cast and their performances give real weight and perspective, making you a Participant in the story.

One of my favourite aspects of this film is the location... its almost a character of its own; a foreboding and hostile one (the lighting speaks to this greatly).

Worth of watching Aiyai
neshmobile17 October 2021
Aiyai is one of the best psychological thriller film I have ever seen.

It has high production value and worth of watching the movie. Amazing cinematography by Damien Beebe and directed by Alan Arumugam.

All the cast acted well and do justice for their roles. Overall it's a good production.

Excellent Horror/Thriller
jrlingwood30 March 2020
Aiyai: Wrathful Soul is a tension-filled film which satisfies all of the horror genre conventions whilst being driven by a strong and unique storyline, dynamic and atmospheric cinematography, and attention to detail.

Horror films usually work on the premise that the audience is to be scared out of their wits through the use of jump scares and sudden jump cuts usually accompanied by loud sounds or screams. Whilst Aiyai certainly does its fair share of providing scary moments, it does so more with psychological subtlety and deft of hand, rather than sledgehammer reveals.

This is a highly original, intelligent and satisfying film which more than pulls its weight in the field of the horror genre.

Highly recommended 9/10
