Members of the Writers Guild of America at Sesame Workshop and management avoided a strike after reaching a tentative agreement on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement, the guild announced on Friday.
According to their press release, the writers, who include members of WGA East and WGA West, won historic jurisdiction and minimum rates for animation and new media programs produced by Sesame, protections against artificial intelligence, paid parental leave benefits and substantial improvements to new media residuals.
The 35 members of the bargaining unit will vote to ratify the agreement in the next few days.
“We are so proud to work for an organization that values its writers, and we believe this new contract will positively impact writers throughout the children’s media landscape. ‘S’ truly is for Solidarity. Writers employed by “Sesame Street” producer Sesame Workshop have voted unanimously to support a strike authorization vote from the Writers Guild of America East as the April 19 expiration of the current contract approaches.
The 35 writers represented by the union have been in negotiations with the production company behind “Sesame Street” and other children’s programs since February. If the sides can’t reach a deal by April 19, picketing will begin outside Sesame Workshop’s Manhattan headquarters on April 24, the WGA East said Tuesday.
“We are committed to working with Sesame Workshop to codify a fair contract for writers that embodies these values, and which allows the Workshop to continue to attract top-level talent who can artfully create stories that successfully balance entertainment, playfulness, and joy with education and enrichment,” the union’s Sesame Workshop negotiating committee said in a statement. “Our demands would be extremely meaningful for the affected writers,...

In the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery’s merger, HBO Max has removed a host of titles, including many that it produced and owns outright, prompting a single question — why?
Earlier this week, HBO Max thinned its library of available titles with the removal of 20 originals and an additional 16 movies. Some of the impacted titles were the one-season cult queer series “Genera+ion,” and animated shows like “Infinity Train” and “Summer Camp Island.” The streamer also announced that select “Sesame Street” specials would be cut, which turned out to be around 200 episodes of the iconic children’s show.
The answer is both simple and complex. Company insiders told CNBC that the dropped shows were not frequently watched but that their removal is expected to produce “tens of millions” of dollars in savings as Warner Bros. Discovery seeks to trim about 3 billion to pay down post-merger debt that has ballooned to more than 50 billion,...

An ongoing story as of late is the impact of the recent merger of Warner Bros Studios and Discovery. The new CEO, David Zaslav, has already made several controversial decisions that are currently being met with criticism. One big note is the canceling of two features that were near completion. DC’s Batgirl, and the animated film Scoob! Holiday Haunt was shelved with no intention of ever being released so the company could claim them as tax write-offs.
Another big money-saving decision was to pull movies and shows from their streaming platform, HBO Max, that were underperforming so they could save on residuals. The company had already silently pulled a few titles — as recent as the pandemic-shot 2021 film, Locked Down. But they have announced the removal of around 40 titles as early as this week.

HBO Max will remove almost 36 titles from its service as early as this week, Variety has confirmed.
A spokesperson for HBO Max attributed the decision to the pending merge of the platform with Discovery+, which is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max’s statement reads. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”
Taking off the titles from streaming would also help Warner Bros. Discovery cut costs by removing lesser-watched programs to save money on residuals. An exact date or time when the titles will be taken off has not been announced.
Although HBO Max has removed several titles in the past weeks, including several Warner Bros. films and HBO TV shows such as “Camping,” “Vinyl,” “Mrs. Fletcher” and “Run,...

Netflix is diving deeper into its relationship with Dr. Seuss Enterprises. On Tuesday, the streamer revealed five new preschool series and specials – all animated – are in the works.

According to the streamer, the new projects will continue Netflix’s focus on preschool concepts. WarnerMedia is announcing a stepped-up commitment to preschool and kids programming across Cartoon Network and streaming service HBO Max, with a goal of reaching 50 original preschool shows in the next two years.
The company made the announcement of the fall programming plans ahead of a virtual upfront presentation to media buyers. HBO Max is ramping up its offerings for advertisers ahead of the launch of an ad-supported tier of its service, which WarnerMedia expects to launch by June.
Cartoon Network, designated as the central kids and family brand for WarnerMedia, has adopted a new tagline “Redraw Your World.” The aim of that message, a press release said, is “to empower kids to feel comfortable with who they are, embrace their uniqueness and believe in their own ability to impact change.” The network said it has also made its first kid-musician-in-residence deal with Nandi Bushell, a 10-year-old viral music star.

The series will begin to air on the streamer beginning next season, Season 51, before the episodes then move over to the show’s original home of PBS.
Variety reports that the move will entail the following:
New “Sesame Street” content coming to HBO Max includes five new 35-episode seasons of “Sesame Street,” annual “Sesame Street” specials, kicking off with an animated version of “The Monster at the End of this Book,” a family-centric live-action take on a late-night talk...

Sesame Street is on the move again! The long-running childrens' TV classic will make its way to HBO Max after four years on HBO.
Real estate isn't what it used to be. The location of Sesame Street has changed quite a bit in the past few years. After more than 40 seasons on PBS, the classic childrens' show moved to HBO. Now, after the show's 50th season, Big Bird will be migrating once again to HBO Max.
Starting with Sesame Street season 51, five new seasons of Sesame Street will be available to stream on new WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. In addition to the new seasons, the 50-year catalogue of Sesame Street episodes will be available to HBO Max subscribers as well. As that catalogue includes over 4,500 episodes, Deadline notes that HBO Max and Sesame Workshop are likely to curate some classics, lest Warner's servers explode. New...

HBO Max and “Sesame Street” producer Sesame Workshop have announced a new partnership which will bring the show’s 50-year library, as well as five new seasons of the show, to the streamer.
Beginning with season 51, the historic children’s series will premiere on HBO Max, before moving over to air on its traditional home of PBS Kids. All of the new “Sesame Street”-related content will also be made available to PBS Kids after premiering on the WarnerMedia-owned streamer. HBO will continue to air “Sesame Street” through season 50.
The deal is indicative of HBO Max’s continuing push into the kids’ and family programming domain, as the streamer announced two executive appointments to its family friendly divisions earlier this week.

HBO Max will be the new Svod home of Sesame Street, which will be relocating from HBO and its on-demand platforms HBO Now/Go. WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming platform has closed an expansive five-year deal with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit media and educational organization behind the iconic children program. It includes five new 35-episode seasons of Sesame Street, four new live-action and animated series, including an Elmo-hosted talk show and an animated Sesame Street spinoff, annual specials, as well as the show’s 50-year library which includes more than 4,500 episodes.
The deal will kick in with Sesame Street‘s 51st season. It will succeed the current five-year pact Sesame Workshop inked with HBO in 2015, which comes to an end with the upcoming Season 50 of Sesame Street.
This is the first time the entire Sesame Street library has been made available. It hasn’t been determined exactly how many episodes will...

No one needs to tell WarnerMedia and HBO Max bosses Bob Greenblatt and Kevin Reilly how to get to Sesame Street.
The upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service is taking “Sesame Street” from HBO under an expanded relationship with Sesame Workshop. The new agreement will bring five more seasons of “Sesame Street” and four spinoffs to HBO Max, as well as annual specials and the legendary preschool program’s 50-year library.
Sunny days, indeed.
The deal is currently just for the United States, though the parties are looking towards expanding globally as HBO Max does. HBO Max is set to launch here in Spring 2020.
Seasons 51-55 of “Sesame Street” will each feature 35 new episodes. After the seasons and episodes premiere on HBO Max, they will become available for free on PBS Kids about nine months after they debut on the Svod service.

August is not exactly a month known for exciting new shows. The summer push has largely crested, Emmys fatigue is real, and the new fall season lingers just beyond the horizon.
But while the TV world plays catch-up on a busy summer so far, the roster of new shows continues to expand, as always. It’s a less-traditional slate than usual, but that might be necessary to catch the eyes of TV viewers readying themselves for the rest of 2018.
(We do this roundup of new shows every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, June, and July.)
“Random Acts of Flyness”
Independent filmmaker Terence Nance (“An Oversimplification of Her Beauty”) makes a grand entrance into the world of TV with this genre-defying series that combines animation, documentary, and musical performance. An abstract look at modern American life...
