Looking at the erosion of moon rocks from meteor ejecta scientists have performed a survey of large meteor impacts on the moon over the past billion years. Surprise, about 300 million years ago the rate of impacts suddenly doubled. The study also suggests the expected number of impacts on the Earth during the same period yet only a small number of the meteor craters have been found.
