The first look of Éanna Hardwicke as Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane alongside Steve Coogan as his embattled Irish national manager Mick McCarthy, has been revealed from upcoming comedy biopic “Saipan.”
The film — first announced earlier in the year by Variety — chronicles one of the most infamous moments in Irish sporting history, when Keane and McCarthy had a very public falling out. Alongside Hardwicke and Coogan, the supporting cast includes Alice Lowe (“Sightseers”), Jamie Beamish (“Derry Girls”), Alex Murphy (“Young Offenders”), Harriett Cairns (“Bridgerton”) and Peter McDonald (“The Batman”).
“Saipan” is being directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa — the duo behind “Good Vibrations” and “Ordinary Love” — — working from an original script by Paul Fraser (“Dead Man’s Shoes”). Bankside Films is handling sales and will be showing a promo to buyers at the American Film Market.

FX is transporting viewers back to Belfast during the Troubles with “Say Nothing,” a limited series that the network released a trailer for on Wednesday.
The trailer has a sort of kiss-kiss-bang-bang ‘70s thriller tone that emphasizes the thrill of young people fighting for a radical cause. That is not the tone of journalist Patrick Radden Keefe’s excellent book on which the series is based, which is more neutral and sad. FX’s description of the show, however, hints that the show may be more like the book. “Telling the story of various Irish Republican Army (Ira) members, ‘Say Nothing’ explores the extremes some people will go to in the name of their beliefs, the way a deeply divided society can suddenly tip over into armed conflict, the long shadow of radical violence for all affected, and the emotional and psychological costs of a code of silence,” according to the network.

The creators of Derry Girls and Big Boys have hit out at ITV over the UK network’s plan to hire an exec who would use AI to create program ideas.
Lisa Mcgee and Jack Rooke’s criticism came after it emerged over the weekend that ITV had been advertising for a ‘Head of Generative AI Innovation’ role on LinkedIn, with Mcgee calling it “incredibly depressing.”
The role, which would pay up to £95,000 a year, called for a “visionary” candidate who would lead “AI-driven transformation of ITV Studios and streamer Itvx. This would include “character development” and “AI-generated ideation.”
Writers have long feared the creep of AI use in creative endeavors and the issue was among the most divisive during last year’s U.S. labor strikes. ITV’s plan has also provoked many writers over on this side of the pond.

U.K. public service broadcaster ITV has come under fire after a job advert for a “head of generative AI innovation” went viral.
The advert, which was posted on LinkedIn as well as other job sites, says the role will include spearheading “AI-driven innovations in content creation for TV shows, films, and digital-first content across ITV Studios and Itvx” and implementing tools like “AI-generated ideation, character development, and enhanced production graphics.”
The chosen candidate, who will be based in London, will be paid up to £95,000 per year with the potential for an annual bonus and “generous” vacation allowance to boot.
Television writers have reacted with outrage to the job posting, however. In a statement, Ellie Peers, general secretary for the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (Wggb), said: “We were shocked to hear that ITV are intending to bring in an AI expert to replace writers and other creators. There’s...

Apple TV Europe boss and BFI chair Jay Hunt engaged in a rare public Q&a hosted by “The Traitors” U.K. presenter Claudia Winkleman during the BFI London Film Festival, where she discussed her lengthy career in U.K. public service broadcasting, move to streaming and the U.K. screen industry at large.
Among the advice Hunt shared with the audience was the importance of acknowledging failure and taking risks. Of the latter, she revealed that “Slow Horses” – one of AppleTV+’s biggest U.K. hits, which has since gone on to win BAFTA and Emmy awards – had been considered a risky investment, with the U.S. streamer only picking it up after it was turned down by the BBC.
“I think you have to take risks,” said Hunt. “It’s interesting. ‘Slow Horses’ is a very good example where it was passed on by the BBC. I think...

Exclusive: Creatives behind upcoming BBC comedy Smoggie Queens have credited RuPaul’s Drag Race UK with clearing the path for more shows about queer communities across the nation.
Phil Dunning, who created and stars in the Hat Trick-produced show alongside the likes of Peaky Blinders star Charlotte Riley and Mark Benton, said a decade ago the series about drag queens in the north east of England may have struggled to get a greenlight.
Now into its sixth season, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK launched in 2019 and has consistently been one of BBC Three’s top-rated shows, catapulting the careers of the likes of The Vivienne and Baga Chipz and carving out space in the national conversation about drag. The majority of its contestants come from outside of London.

Late Wednesday afternoon at a BFI London Film Festival event, beloved British presenter Claudia Winkleman began the session by quoting The Hollywood Reporter.
“For one of the most influential, respected and, yes, powerful executives in international TV,” The Traitors host said, reading out from THR’s newly-released list of the most powerful women in international television, “Jay Hunt keeps a remarkably low profile, rarely giving interviews and keeping public appearances to a minimum.”
Winkleman, best known for her presenting duties on U.K. reality show staple Strictly Come Dancing, spoke with her friend, British Film Institute chair and Apple TV+ European creative director Hunt, about the exec’s vibrant, impressive career — and why this country’s film and TV industry is doing it better than anywhere else.

Ruth Bradley has found success playing the character of Emma Flyte on the Apple TV+ spy drama “Slow Horses.” The Irish actress earned the role after a blind audition where she was impressed by the high-quality writing. Bradley has since completed filming for the show’s fifth season and will begin work on the sixth.
Bradley remembered being drawn to acting from a young age after seeing Gary Oldman in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” She was fascinated by how actors could completely change their appearance. Years later, Bradley feels lucky to act alongside Oldman on “Slow Horses.” She said Oldman is very kind and likes tea with biscuits, showing his down-to-earth personality on set.
In the past, Bradley’s roles often required her to transform her appearance through different hairstyles and costumes. However, her character Emma Flyte does not look very different from Bradley. This marks a change from Bradley’s...

A “hopeful future.” How delightfully mythical that sounds in the face of the world’s many tragedies over the last thousand years — a sparkly daydream within a singular moment, gone as quickly as it arrived.
Sure, that sounds pretty bleak. But it’s not as if this realistic cynicism is without warrant. Once upon a time, Hollywood was capable of producing hopeful, positive, and generally upbeat entertainment.
Of course, the protagonist faced many struggles, but there was always an underlying sense that everything would turn out just fine in the end.
(Prime Video (Screenshot))
It’s not difficult to understand the elemental sense of doom and cessation that pervades most of our entertainment nowadays. People crave it; the more angry they are, the more they’ll demand doom and gloom, with blood galore.
A brief snippet of history (roughly a thousand years or so) tells a tale of cyclical redundancy...

If you think about it in broad strokes, the hit British sitcom Derry Girls is strikingly similar to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with one obvious difference — Derry Girls won an Emmy.
When the British public broadcasting station Channel 4 premiered Northern Irish playwright and screenwriter Lisa McGee’s personal and punchy coming-of-age sitcom about life in her hometown of Derry during the turbulent mid-1990s, the channel probably didn’t anticipate that Derry Girls would become their biggest comedy series since Father Ted, their last successful sitcom about Ireland in the ‘90s, and their first scripted international sensation to pair with The Great British Bake Off as their American-beloved megahits. Thankfully, the heart, humor and joyful chaos of Derry Girls translated well from Northern Irish to American English, and today, over two years after the series finale, Derry Girls is still one of the most streamed sitcoms on Netflix U.

Star Trek is boldly going in some cool new directions. At San Diego Comic-Con, the producers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds announced that one of the most beloved characters from the original 1960s series is joining the crew.
Scotty, the engineering genius played by James Doohan, will be a regular part of the Strange New Worlds cast. But he won’t be played by Doohan – the role is going to British actor Martin Quinn. This makes Quinn the first Scottish actor to play Scotty, which is pretty neat.
Quinn has appeared in shows across the pond like Derry Girls and Annika. But playing young Scotty is a huge deal. Strange New Worlds acts as a prequel, set years before the classic Enterprise adventures. So we’ll get to see Scotty in his early days, still learning from his mentor at Starfleet Academy.
The producers shared an exclusive clip of Quinn as Scotty too.

Have you ever wondered what “Love Island” would be like if it were set in the 1300s? Netflix’s new dark-comedy series “The Decameron” will answer all of your questions.
The series, created by Kathleen Jordan and executive produced by “Orange Is the New Black” and “Weeds” alum Jenji Kohan, is loosely based on Italian Author Giovanni Boccacio’s short story collection from the mid-14th century. The plot begins after “The Black Death strikes hard in the Italian countryside in 1348, and a handful of nobles retreat to a grand villa with their servants. But what starts as a wine-soaked sex romp descends into a race for survival in this soapy dark comedy,” according to the official description.
Keep reading to find out what stars are traveling back in time to the 1340s in our complete “The Decameron” cast and character guide. The show is now streaming on Netflix.

With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool & Wolverine being closer than ever to the theaters, entertainment outlets are dropping iconic anecdotes surrounding the film and its making. Similarly, one such exciting story caught our attention, that revolves around a particular song used in the Deadpool threequel.
Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine | Marvel Studios
Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and even filmmaker Shawn Levy had apparently poured a herculean effort into obtaining permission from Madonna to use her 1989 hit Like a Prayer. Well, the song’s inclusion in the film is a big deal, since it has only been used once before in a film- Drew Barrymore’s Never Been Kissed.
Securing the Rights to Like a Prayer Wasn’t an Easy Feat for Ryan Reynolds
During the post-production phase for Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy mutually agreed on one particular aspect.

Screenwriter Lisa McGee’s next series is thriller How To Get To Heaven From Belfast, here are the details.
Derry Girls, it’s fair to say, is arguably the biggest breakout sitcom success of the last few years. It follows Erin, Orla, Michelle, Clare and Michelle’s English cousin James in 90s era Derry, and the show mixed sharp wit with the warmth of the bond between them.
It was written by Lisa McGee, who previously created the brilliant sitcom London Irish, which was sadly cancelled after a single series.
McGee is reunitimg with the star of London Irish, Sinead Keenan, for her next show, How To Get To Heaven From Belfast. The synopsis for it reads as follows:
Clever, chaotic TV writer Saoirse, glamorous, stressed-out mother of three Robyn, and dependable, inhibited carer Dara have been a tight-knit group since school. Now in their late 30s, but still as close as ever,...

Roísín Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan and Caoilfhionn Dunne will play Saoirse, Robyn and Dara, three childhood friends, now in their late 30s, who come together over news of a fourth friend’s death, leading them on a what’s described as a “dark, dangerous and hilarious odyssey” through Ireland and beyond as they try to piece together the truth of the past.
“I couldn’t be more excited to start production on ‘How To Get To Heaven From Belfast,'” said McGee, who create and wrote the series and serves as exec producer. “I’ve loved writing Saoirse, Robyn and Dara — three flawed, funny women who are about to embark on the most thrilling and terrifying adventure of their lives.

One of the best things about television is the way it allows the viewers to escape the mundane routine and get into entirely new worlds. However, if these worlds are heavy on the lore or violence, they may make a better watch for the weekend. At the end of a working day, there is nothing better than just relaxing.
Here are 10 TV shows which are perfect for that on Netflix. Get your subscription ready and join another fun adventure.
Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)
While there was no shortage of dramatic moments in the show, Gilmore Girls created a very comforting setting of the closed world of a small town with a strong community that many long for today. The show had its ups and downs, but watching good people support each other to be better is the ultimate comfort.

There are many things that can make a viewer start watching a particular show. For example, if the cast includes their favorite actors, or if the plot revolves around something extremely interesting or mysterious. Or the simplest thing: the show's story is just relatable enough.
But getting viewers hooked is not the hardest part, keeping them involved until the end is. It's also a known fact that creating a perfect finale for a well-run show is something that only a few creators have ever managed to do.
So here we have a list of 5 series that started out great and continued that way until the end.
1. Chernobyl (2019)
This miniseries is one of the few shows that keeps you invested in literally every scene there is. The gripping images that are followed by a suspenseful, bone-chilling music just make it impossible for the viewers to turn away from the screen even...

Unfortunately, thanks to too many TV shows that shamelessly drag on for several seasons longer than they need to, many people believe that the longer a show goes on, the worse its quality becomes. When you look at some shows like ABC's Grey's Anatomy, it's hard to disagree.
However, over the years there have been some rare gems thrown into the mix. These shows are not only as good as they were in the beginning, but they get better the longer you watch them. Here are 8 that fans couldn't get enough of.
Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
One of the most classic choices, which doesn't make it any less valid. The show may be a little hard to get into, but the longer you watch, the more invested you become in the story, and the more devastated you are when the finale arrives.
What's even better is that Breaking Bad holds up over the years,...

Jack Rooke’s sweet, award-winning sitcom Big Boys is returning for a third series, with Jack Rooke also making a fresh appearance.
Big Boys, Jack Rooke’s autobiographical sitcom about his experience at university, has been one of the comedic treats of the last few years.
Derry Girls star Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing play two disparate young men, Jack and Danny, who find themselves as roommates in their first year of University. The former is closeted and sensitive, the latter is full of boorish bonhomie, but despite their differences they form a touching, tender bond, and Rooke’s writing covers everything from Jack exploring his sexuality to Danny’s mental health. The show recieved critical acclaim for Rooke’s refusal to adhere to the usual madculine stereotypes seen on TV and for highlighting mental health struggles.

Period comedy The Decameron is coming to Netflix, and here’s the trailer for the brand new eight episode show.
It seems that period comedies are coming back into vogue. A few months ago we got Andy Riley’s fun Dark Ages romp Seize Them!, with Derry Girls star Nicola Coghlan, Aimee Lou Wood and Nick Frost.
Another Derry Girls alumnus, Saoirse Monica-Jackson, stars in The Decameron, which is coming to Netflix next month.
A prescient comedy, the show examines how people of that generation dealt with a worldwide pandemic, and the chasm between the rich and the poor.
The synopsis reads as follows:
You are cordially invited to a wine-soaked sex romp set in the Italian countryside… The Decameron is a soapy dark comedy that examines the all-too-timely theme of class struggles in the season of a pandemic. In the year 1348, the Black Death strikes hard in the city of Florence,...

With Baby Reindeer holding a spot at the top of Netflix for weeks, and Bridgerton taking over only to continue the same tradition, it's safe to say that these shows are the streamer's biggest originals of 2024 so far.
What's even better is that Bridgerton season 3 is coming back with part 2 in less than a week, and Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning just landed another major role.
How will the two very different universes collide, and what's next for the actress who brought one of the creepiest stalkers to life? Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming adaptation of The Magic Faraway Tree.

The main character of the new season of Bridgerton is Penelope Featherington. But there is no bright spot in Penelope's life. Both of her sisters have married, and the girl is forced to listen to their mockery of the fact that she will remain an old maid.
Pen has been a fan favorite for the past two seasons, but as the focus shifted to her, the audience's love for her grew even more. If you have already watched the first part of the third season of Bridgerton and were fascinated by Nicola Coughlan, who plays Pen, then you will definitely be interested in another project where she plays one of the main roles.
On Netflix, you can find one of the most critically acclaimed British dramedies of recent years (99% on Rotten Tomatoes) starring Nicola Coughlan — a historical series about the military conflict in Northern Ireland called Derry Girls.

As you’ll probably know, Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s most popular series. The erotic period drama has captured the attention and imagination of many fans around the world, proving once more that sex – indeed – does sell! The series is based on the eponymous novel series by Julia Quinn, with the first season premiering on December 25, 2020. The series is currently in its third season, whose first part was released only recently, and in it, the series has continued to push boundaries like it did in previous seasons. In Season 3, Irish actress Nicola Coughlan has become one of the leads and this has caused a lot of controversy.
Namely, the former Derry Girls star has been criticized because of her appearance, and many thought that Bridgerton had gone too far with making her the female lead in Season 3, especially in light of the large number of erotic scenes in the series.

Like Google, Netflix has evolved from a Silicon Valley venture to a legitimate verb in the cultural lexicon. Over a decade after expanding from DVD-by-mail to streaming service, and seven since debuting its first original series with House of Cards, Netflix still dominates the online TV landscape. While competitors like Warner Bros., Disney, and Apple certainly vie for our time with their own in-house programs, the sheer inundation of Netflix originals requires its very own examination.
The powerfully gripping Baby Reindeer, the stylishly alluring Ripley, and the gut-busting Beef are merely a few of the latest storytelling pleasures available to anyone with a WiFi connection and a (potentially borrowed) Netflix login. No matter how many crimes are committed because people are inspired by what they hear on various true crime podcasts, the genre remains extremely popular. Millions of people get their thrills from real-life stories and dive deep into the minds of murderers through their psychological portraits.
Only Murders in the Building isn't the only show that depicts fans of the genre facing real-life mysteries, but it's safe to say it's the most popular. Starring A-list celebrities like Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Meryl Streep and Cara Delevigne, the show has been unparalleled for the past 3 seasons. But now things might change.
What Bodkin Is About?
To say that May is packed with Netflix premieres would be an understatement. There are many different original series premiering for the first time or returning with new seasons this month, and Bodkin is one of them.

Looking back at Derry Girls, many people believe that Netflix, or any streaming platform for that matter, has yet to create such a brutally honest yet entertaining sitcom. Derry Girls had it all, from brilliant comedic performances from all of the show's leads to truly heartbreaking reminders of Ireland's troubled times.
It was only several years after the show's finale aired that people began to notice some of the little things that the series glossed over. The origins of James Maguire, the Derry newcomer who joined the girls in the pilot, is one of the secrets that has only recently been revealed.
Where Derry Girls’ James Is From?
Although viewers were enchanted by the ensemble of girls who portrayed Erin, Michelle, Claire and Orla in the show, it's Dylan Llewellyn's James who brought the unique accent to the group. As the only boy in the all-girls college, he was...

One of the easiest ways to measure someone’s success is to count all the pop culture references that others make to them. In the case of Stephen King, they would probably hit a three-digit number, considering how many TV shows, movies, and other novel authors have been using King’s plots as an inspiration.
If you are interested to see 10 of the most popular TV shows that referred to King one way or the other, check out the list below.
Lost (2004-2010)
Heavily influenced by King's writing, Lost had no shortage of references and easter eggs to the author within the show. The most obvious are season 3 Juliet's choice of Carrie as a book club entry, and the future version of Jack reading a newspaper clipping with words like "Ted," "the Tower," and "beam" in it, all references to Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

Nicola Coughlan opened up about her support for Palestine and how she was told it could affect the acting gigs she’s offered.
In a Teen Vogue cover story, the Bridgerton star sat down to discuss the show’s upcoming and highly anticipated season three. In the conversation, she also got candid about her support for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Coughlan has been vocal on social media about her support for the people, especially the children, of Palestine, who are caught in the middle of the Israel-Hamas War. She acknowledged her support stems from a “moral responsibility to give back” because of her privilege as a white woman.
The actress noted her advocacy began before she landed her breakout role on Derry Girls. She was involved in different causes, like going door-to-door campaigning for marriage equality in her home country of Ireland and marching for abortion rights.

Nicola Coughlan said she would spontaneously burst into tears while balancing filming schedules for Bridgerton and Big Mood.
“I’d film one show during the week, the other on the weekend,” Coughlan told AP Entertainment. Coughlan stars as Penelope Bridgerton in season three of Netflix’s Bridgerton, out next month, and as Maggie in the UK’s Channel 4 comedy Big Mood, released in March.
“I remember that I was so tired, I would just start crying randomly,” Coughlan said of balancing both projects at once. “And I would I would be saying, ‘There’s nothing actually wrong with me. I am just very tired.’ I had to learn my Big Mood script on the Bridgerton set.”
The Derry Girls star said the back-and-forth was made more difficult because the two shows are very different. “Big Mood has quite naturalistic dialogue,” she explained. “Bridgerton is very stylized. We’d film...
