Quotes

  • Lisa Tepes : [Seeing an elderly patient in her home in Lupu]  You stay right there, Mrs. Djuvara. I'm going to get something for your cough.

Mrs. Djuvara : [She coughs feebly as Lisa hands her a glass of water]  Thank you, Dr. Tepes. It bubbles when I breathe. Did I say that?

Lisa Tepes : Yes, you did. Don't move, I'll be right back with some medicine.

Mrs. Djuvara : More leaves I expect. Mr. Djuvara always gives me leaves. Leaves and acorns. Probably turning into a squirrel.

    [She spies Lisa's wedding ring]

Mrs. Djuvara : I didn't know you were married.

Lisa Tepes : My husband is traveling abroad. He'll be home before winter's done. I'll be right back.

[She heads to her lab and washes her hands before looking in a book containing diagrams of the lungs]

    Lisa Tepes : Hmm, yes.

[Picking up a locket containing Dracula's picture]

Lisa Tepes : I hate that you're not here. Every day. But I love that you gave me the knowledge to help people.

[Walking back into her sitting room, she places a bottle on the table]

Mrs. Djuvara : Is that leaves? If I have to chew more cud, I'm going to start making milk Dr. Tepes.

Lisa Tepes : No, no. It's a powder mixed with some strawberry wine.

Mrs. Djuvara : A powder? You sound like the old wise woman we used to have. The powder turned out to be her dried foot skin.

Lisa Tepes : My God. I'm amazed any of you are still alive! No, this powder is a medicine that grows as mold.

Mrs. Djuvara : You're giving me mold? I think I want the leaves!

Lisa Tepes : Trust me. Just take two sips three times a day until the bottle's empty.

    Mrs. Djuvara : That's all?

Lisa Tepes : Come and see me next week if you like, but your chest should be clear by Friday.

Mrs. Djuvara : I don't know how we coped before you came here, Doctor. Magic powders. My Lord.

Lisa Tepes : It's not magic. It's nothing but things we used to know that we forgot or lost over the years. No foot skin required.

[She opens the door to find several clergymen waiting outside for her]

    Lisa Tepes : .

The Bishop : Mrs. Lisa Tepes.

    Lisa Tepes : Yes?

    [She takes Mrs. Djuvara's hand]

Lisa Tepes : You go on home now.

The Bishop : [as Mrs. Djuvara walks away, one of the priests shoots her a nasty grin]  I am an emissary of the Archbishop of Targoviste. Do I understand correctly that you serve as a physic to this community?

Lisa Tepes : I'm a Doctor, yes. Can I help you? Is the Archbishop ill?

The Bishop : You know what to look for.

[His fellow priests sweep past Lisa, into the house, and begin turning the place upside down]

Lisa Tepes : [Stunned at this turn of events]  What? What do you need? Tell me, I'll gladly give it to you.

    The Bishop : Silence.

Lisa Tepes : I will *not* be silent! Just let me help!

The Bishop : With Satan's tools? I don't think so.

    Lisa Tepes : Excuse me?

Burly : [Finding the entrance to the lab]  Here, your Eminence.

The Bishop : [He looks at the diagrams, tubes, beakers and other medical items around him]  Satan's tools. Make fire, clean it out.

    Lisa Tepes : What?

The Bishop : We were told that something was wrong here. It seems she was telling the truth. What are you doing here that you need to subject the good people of this land to such fearsome engines?

    Lisa Tepes : I don't understand!

The Bishop : Look around you! Do you pretend that these things are not witchcraft and alchemy?

Burly : [He touches Lisa's centrifuge, which begins to spin, causing him to fall to the ground in apparent horror]  It moves on its own!

The Bishop : What is this?

    Lisa Tepes : It's medicine.

The Bishop : How can engines of the Devil be physic, woman?

Lisa Tepes : It's old knowledge, that's all. Sciences from older times, lost to history.

[She holds out her book of lung diagrams]

Lisa Tepes : I have... I mean I've studied times past and learned ways to serve our people more effectively, that's all.

The Bishop : [Glancing down at the book]  Paganism.

Lisa Tepes : No, it's just science! It has nothing to do with any god or...

The Bishop : [His eyes flash angrily]  Nothing to do with God?

Lisa Tepes : No, that's not what I meant.
