As the brand’s new ambassador, the 48-year-old actor models both timepieces and eyewear in a campaign released this week, and he calls the opportunity “a great honor.”

John Ridley, the screenwriter behind features like 12 Years a Slave, Needle in a Timestack, and Ben-Hur, and comics like Gcpd: The Blue Wall, The Other History of the DC Universe, and Black Panther, wants to break into the Isaac Asimov business. Deadline announced today that Ridley will adapt Asimov’s 1954 sci-fi novel Caves of Steel, otherwise known as the first installment of the prolific author’s Robots series. Joining Ridley to help create a draft of the script is Marvel’s Luke Cage alum Cheo Hadari Coker.

Laysla De Oliveira will star alongside Zoe Saldaña in the upcoming Paramount Plus series “Lioness” from Taylor Sheridan, Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is based on a real-life CIA program and follows Cruz Manuelos (De Oliveira), described as a rough-around-the-edges but passionate young Marine, who is recruited to join the CIA’s Lioness Engagement Team to help bring down a terrorist organization from within. Saldaña will play Joe, the station chief of the Lioness program tasked with training, managing and leading her female undercover operatives. The series is set to go into production in June.

De Oliveira currently stars in the Netflix series “Locke & Key,” with the third season of that series set to debut later in 2022. She has also previously starred in films such as “In the Tall Grass,” “Guest of Honour,” “Needle in a Timestack,” and “Code 8.”

Time travel is tricky, especially when trying to effectively demonstrate its parameters and ramifications in narrative cinema. Sometimes, it allows for meaningful avenues in exploring the human condition, but often it’s a conceptual hematoma overshadowing the narrative. Such is the case with John Ridley’s Needle in a Timestack, based on a short story by prolific sci-fi writer Robert Silverberg (whose 1992 update on Asimov’s The Positronic Man was adapted in 1999 for the Robin Williams film Bicentennial Man).

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, they go and make a syrupy sci-fi melodrama about two guys using time travel to fight over a woman. Jumping into the unfortunately growing slate of sci-fi romances, “Needle in a Timestack” is not an ounce as charming as “About Time” and far more self-serious than the equally bizarre but mildly humorous “Timer.” What it does have is a universe with its own rules, one in which everyone is in constant fear of waves known as “time-shifts,” a side effect of time travel, which it calls “jaunting.” Though the movie is The title alone has already inspired titters online, and the movie is just as clunky and overwrought.

Broken into chapters corresponding to different romantic configurations as they appear and disappear in the timeline, the movie opens with Nick (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Janine (Cynthia Erivo) in utterly boring wedded bliss.

She is, yes, the titular censor. It is 1980s England, the time of “video nasties” that drew parental consternation and tabloid outrage. These were the low-budget, ultra-violent VHS cassettes that earned their own category in the collective consciousness. For a movie about a fated love (Leslie Odom Jr.’s Nick and Cynthia Erivo’s Janine) being undermined by a jealous ex (Orlando Bloom’s Tommy), I didn’t expect to witness a scene towards the start where the latter philosophically (and selfishly) attempts to legitimize his sabotage by explaining how every love is, by definition, another’s missed opportunity. He points out a random woman in the bar and tells Nick that whomever she falls for will be the lucky one of millions, setting off a chain reaction that diverts all the other men and women destined to have crossed her path as suitable partners somewhere else instead. The sentiment is intriguing and full of possibilities well outside the scope of what appeared to be a run-of-the-mill, time travel romance.

Oscar nominee and Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. is the latest A-lister to join star Daniel Craig in “Knives Out 2,” the star-studded sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 hit whodunnit.

In what has quickly become a who’s who of Hollywood A-list talent, Odon joins a lineup that includes Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista and Edward Norton.

Craig reprises his role as detective Benoit Blanc for the franchise’s next installment. Details surrounding the film, written and directed by Johnson, are being kept under wraps, but production is set to begin this summer in Greece.

Johnson will also produce the film, alongside Ram Bergman, under their T-Street banner.

Leslie Odom Jr. has joined the cast of Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out 2,” an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

The actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in “One Night in Miami,” will join Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe and Kathryn Hahn in the film.

The casting comes two months after Johnson signed a $400 million-plus deal with Netflix to write and direct two sequels to the Oscar-nominated murder mystery film, with Craig returning as ace detective Benoit Blanc. Johnson will also produce with partner Ram Bergman, with shooting set to begin this summer in Greece.

The deal is one of the largest for a streamer in history, and it provides Netflix a franchise as competition in the streaming space has increased dramatically over the last few months.

Billed as the first-ever, definitive and only authorized scripted limited series on the life of Franklin, Genius: Aretha will begin filming in November for a spring 2020 premiere on National Geographic channels in 172 countries and 43 languages.

After conquering Broadway and breaking out on the big screen in Steve McQueen’s “Widows,” Cynthia Erivo is ready to break free in her new film “Harriet” as the Underground Railroad pioneer Harriet Tubman.

Erivo stars as Tubman in the new historical drama that Focus Features is releasing later this fall. The movie tells the story of the iconic freedom fighter and follows her both on her escape from slavery and during her subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves in the South during a time of extreme adversity ahead of the Civil War.

Peter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44 has hired former Miramax film exec David Thwaites as Evp, working across both television and film. Additionally, Rachel Foley is joining Film 44 as Manager.

“David has been both a producer and an executive and has been incredibly successful in both capacities,” Berg and Lombardo said in a statement. “He has a long history of identifying and supporting emerging writers and filmmakers.”

Thwaites previously headed Miramax’s film department as VP and Svp. There, he initiated and executive produced the recent Halloween reboot. ABC Studios has inked a new five-year, all-encompassing deal with writer, director and producer John Ridley to create content across multiple platforms. He is presently working on several projects with the studio.

Ridley, who won an Academy Award in 2013 for best adapted screenplay for “12 Years a Slave,” has long worked with the studio. He created the Emmy-winning ABC Studios series “American Crime,” which aired for three seasons on ABC, as well as the six-part limited series “Guerilla,” which was produced by ABC Signature Studios and aired on Showtime and Sky.

Writer/director/producer John Ridley has signed a new five-year overall deal with ABC Studios. This is the longest-term pact for Ridley at the studio where he has been since 2014 with a two-year overall deal, followed by a three-year one.

The long-term agreement reflects the desire by TV studios to secure their talent amid a red-hot overall deal market, with a number of bidding wars over top-level creative talent going on right now.

Under the new deal, which is strictly for TV, Ridley will develop content across multiple platforms. He is currently working on a number of projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming.

Laysla De Oliveira (Needle in a Timestack) is set as a series regular in Locke & Key, Netflix’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic, from Hill, Carlton Cuse and Idw Entertainment, and Kevin Alves (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments) has joined in a recurring role.

Locke & Key is a horror-fantasy series that revolves around siblings Kinsey, Tyler and Bode who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

De Oliveira will play Dodge, a beautiful, unpredictable and sinister demon in human form that torments the Locke family. Alves is Javi, the colorful life of the party who doesn’t take life too seriously.

HBO has cast eight series regulars and two actors to recur opposite Ben Mendelsohn in The Outsider, based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel.
