In January of 1995, "Star Trek" was riding high. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" had just made its way to the big screen in the form of "Star Trek: Generations," with a new movie already in the works. "Deep Space Nine" was wrapping up its third successful season, and Paramount was poised to launch its own network -- Upn -- with the two-hour pilot of the brand new "Star Trek: Voyager" to mark its debut.
Also debuting with "Voyager" -- and this is rarely mentioned anymore -- was a trio of sitcoms: "Platypus Man," "Muscle," and "Pig Sty." The three sitcoms lasted only 13...

To celebrate the release of A Violent Man – available now on Digital HD – we’re giving away a quad poster signed by the cast and director!
A Violent Man is Ross McCall’s directorial debut from his own script, and stars Craig Fairbrass, Stephen Odubola (Blue Story), Jason Flemyng and Zoe Tapper (Liar).
Bleak, brutal and brilliant, A Violent Man showcases a towering performance from Fairbrass, never better and riding high off acclaim from his recent string of well-reviewed thrillers including Villain and Muscle. The film sees Fairbrass teaming up again with the producers of Villain, who are also behind Boiling Point starring Stephen Graham.
The film features an impressive supporting cast including Jason Flemyng and Stephen Odubola, who is outstanding as Fairbrass’ troubled cellmate Marcus. A Violent Man is a gritty portrayal of the harsh realities of prison life, with a brooding score by two time BAFTA award-winning composer Austin Wintory.

Since 2011, the Edinburgh Film Festival’s Talent Lab has nurtured a number of rising filmmakers through an assortment of masterclasses, workshops and individual mentoring sessions: Talents like Ben Sharrock (“Limbo”), Eva Riley (a recent winner BIFA winner for “Perfect 10”) and Rob Savage (“Host”) are alumni of the program. In 2019, however, the program yielded the Talent Lab Connects offshoot, in which a smaller selection of writers, directors and producers are given the chance to develop specific feature film or series projects with a range of industry mentors.
Now in its third year — and its second of the program taking place online — the program will be headed again by renowned U.K. script editor Kate Leys, whose recent credits include Simon Amstell’s “Benjamin,” Bart Layton’s “American Animals” and John Maclean’s “Slow West.”

Vin Diesel vehicle “Muscle,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” and the Zoe Kravitz-directed “Pussy Island” have proved early sales standouts at a contained virtual Pre-Cannes Screenings whose pre-sales market says a lot about the resilient vitality and ever greater complexity of the international film business.
Budgeted at a reported $60 million, which would make it the biggest project at the Screenings, “Muscle” moved waves when Leonine paid a reported high seven-figure pre-sale figure for Germany.
In an out-of-the-box move, Miramax announced Monday that it had secured worldwide rights to “The Holdovers,” reuniting Payne with “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti.
In earlier banner deals, reinvigorated under Michael de Luca, MGM landed global rights to “Pussy Island” and North America on Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” the biggest film in Cannes competition.

I keep saying that the British film industry is on the up and up, with some top quality independent movies breaking through the ranks and showcasing some incredible talent in front of and behind the camera. Directors, actors, producers, DOPs and stunt folks alike are all showing they can cut it with the best of them.
One thing I love, more than seeing the new breed come through, is when someone who has been a workhorse for years and consistently has put in the work but time and time again has been dismissed as “that Footsoldier Guy,” finally starts to garner the reviews and recognition he deserves. That is right folks – Craig Fairbrass has finally started getting the praise from the “critics” that us lowly reviewers knew all along. After not one but two blistering performances this year,...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, […]

Undoubtedly one of the best movies we’ve watched this year, Muscle finally becomes available this weekend with a cinema and On-Demand release – and to mark the occasion, we spoke to the two leading stars Cavan Clerkin and Craig Fairbrass, as well as director Gerard Johnson.
The film, which takes a candid and unflinching look at toxic maculinity, makes for a n intense, exhilarating, and oddly rather humorous affair, that brings out exceptional performances from its leading men. We discussed with Clerkin the rigorous training he had to undertake for the role, and what a joy it was to work in the environment that Johnson created for his actors. Naturally, we ask what it was like to be on set during the film’s somewhat explicit orgy sequence, too.
With Fairbrass we talk about the nuanced role he undertakes, and how he’s been underestimated as an actor across his career,...

Despite a new lockdown, there are still things to look forward to. Following rave reviews at BFI London Film Festival and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, among others, Muscle is coming to UK cinemas and Video on Demand from 4th December, and we are proud to unveil the brand new UK poster and a set of exclusive stills.
From writer-director Gerard Johnson and shot in stunning black and white, Muscle is a psychological thriller that’s dripping in sweat, tears and testosterone.
The film tells the story of Simon an unhappy, unambitious office worker whose life is gradually taken over by Terry his new, hands-on personal trainer who reveals himself to be more committed, and more dangerous, than Simon could have ever imagined.
Simon isn’t living the life he wants. He’s tired of his dead-end job at a call centre – and he isn’t even any good at it.

Netflix said Monday it is expanding the rollout of a Top 10 listing that will show its subscribers the 10 most-watched titles each day on the streaming giant.
The service said in a blog post that it had been experimenting with the lists recently in Mexico and the UK, and is now rolling it out in the U.S. and globally. “Members in both countries have found them useful, so we are now rolling them out to even more,” wrote Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation.
The lists, which launched today, appear as a newly designed row of ranked titles — overall as well as separately for film and television on the Movies and TV tabs. Netflix, which has been notoriously private with its viewer data, said the lists will be updated every day, and the position of the row will vary depending on how relevant the shows and films are to the user.

“Gospel goes deeper than entertainment,” Pops Staples said in 1968, shortly after his group, the Staple Singers, signed with Stax Records. “It is the word of god. But you can’t push that down anybody’s throat. All we can do is get as many people to hear us as we can.”
A new box set, Come Go With Me: The Stax Collection, which gathers together the band’s Stax discography on vinyl for the first time in ages, traces the Staple Singers’ eternal relationship with this central tension–how to...

Swampy Muscle Shoals soul mixes with a funky Seventies color palette in Grace Potter’s splashy new video for “Back to Me.” The latest release from Potter’s second solo disc Daylight, “Back to Me” finds the singer worn-out and threadbare as a relationship unravels, but she’s also resolute about the inevitable conclusion.
Joined on the chorus by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig from indie pop band Lucius (recently heard on Sheryl Crow’s Threads LP), Potter sings, “All your expectations fall on me, they’re so heavy, baby,...

The first footage from psychological thriller “Muscle” has dropped ahead of its world premiere Friday at the London Film Festival.
Gerard Johnson’s feature, which is filmed entirely in black and white, is set in a testosterone-fueled world of hardcore gyms. It follows Simon (Cavan Clerkin), a directionless and unhappy office worker whose life is gradually taken over by domineering personal trainer Terry (Craig Fairbrass).
“Apart from the documentary ‘Pumping Iron,’ real gym culture has never been tackled in film before,” Johnson said. “I want to change that with this original character study. This is a dark psychological thriller, dripping with a true reflection of manhood – what makes you a man – in the eyes of other men, in the eyes of women, in the eyes of the world? How do you protect that? What happens when you find yourself emasculated?”

This year’s edition of the BFI London Film Festival, which starts today, marks Tricia Tuttle’s first in an official capacity as artistic director after she stood in last year while her predecessor was on sabbatical. So what does she have planned?
Tuttle looks back at last year’s performance with satisfaction when, with a total audience of more than 200,000, per screen attendance rose by 12% to an average paid occupancy of 72%, and overall capacity of 84%. This she ascribes to “a strong year for films driving audience interest,” which she believes she’s matched this year with, among 229 feature films, “The Personal History of David Copperfield” opening the festival, and “The Irishman” closing it, and gala screenings including “Knives Out,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “The King” and “Jojo Rabbit.”
Among the festival’s world premieres are Wash Westmoreland’s “Earthquake Bird,” starring Alicia Vikander, Gerard Johnson’s “Muscle,” Michael Caton-Jones’ “Our Ladies,...
