Imperfect Good Film
izharyahya3 September 2018
A sequel from the first Munafik (2016), this movie have a lot of positive feedbacks from viewers. I took my chance to watch this movie in cinema yesterday and I must admit that Munafik 2 is a good movie. The cinematography in this movie didn't dissapoint me, it's quite good for most of the scenes. For storyline, it does contain a lot of messages and references but there are 2 or 3 plot holes that make me questioning myself until today. At first you will confuse for a while about the timeline in this movie but you will understand the story better later on. I like the background music in this movie because it suits the movie very well and I hope in the future, Malaysian film will have a Malaysia version of "Hans Zimmer". I also like the horror elements and most of the horror elements is unpredictable. I suggest that you watch this movie and share your views with us.

Silly jump scares, poor editing, good for one time watch
srutimisra7 November 2021
"Munafik 2" is a Malay language supernatural horror movie that was released in 2018. It is the second part of the trilogy. The third is coming on its way. This film became the highest-grossing local film in Malaysia.

"Munafik" refers to a person who is a hypocrite. It's a purely Islamic horror flick. There are many references from Quran and Hadith in this movie. The story of this film is connected with the first part. But if you haven't watched the previous part, there won't be any such problem to understand.

Abuja wants to divert the faith of villagers from Islam and forces them to follow his teachings. If anyone denies following his path, he tortures the person with his black magic. Sakinah, daughter of the Imam of the village asks for help from a preacher to save her family from the devil. Adam who already cluttered himself in his thoughts agrees to help Sakinah and the villagers from Abuja.

Syamsul Yusof is the director, producer, and male protagonist in this film. He is indeed a talented person. Camera work is impressive but the editing is extremely poor. I found the treatment dramatic. The jumpscares are predictable.

If you want to watch a horror movie at midnight inside a dark room then you would find this movie scary. Otherwise, "Munafik 2" is good for a one-time watch.

Don't know what the hype is all about
khazaimatol-679668 October 2018
I am sorry but this movie bored me to tears. I left midway because it was just unnecessarily loud and too ridiculous . I mean, who sleeps in a cave nowadays with a kid by all means? And Tok Adi with his Halloween costume? You must be kidding me.

Unless this is a malay version of LOTR, which explains the fantasy elements of this movie (like Maya running up trees to name a few) I thought it was just a noisy movie. Munafiq 1 was way better, at least I was pleasantly surprised at the ending. Sorry to say also, I didnt like the fact that verses of the Quran--not one or two, but many--were thrown about for entertainment purposes. I thought it was too much.

I give it 2 stars just because my husband seemed to enjoy it. Botton line: bad storyline, bad dialogue, bad sound editing. Sorry.

If you want to be scared then I'm assuring you that you will be scared so many times throughout this movie. I think the people with no Islamic knowledge might have some difficulty to understand some conversations in it but it shouldn't matter much. I would've given this movie a 8 star but for the ending it's 7.

TERRIBLE!!!
despaul-058816 October 2018
So I had high hopes from watching the trailer, sure it has a lot of jumpy moments, but what spoilt the damn film was the fact that from start to finish the damn kid cries throughout the film (annoying) so if you like the sound of a crying kid throughout a movie be my guest... The tyrant/villain is damn annoying too, the movie is Super 'backwards'!

Munafik 2 is NOT Another Sequel of Cash-Grab Hypocrite Movie in the Filmmaking Industry.
iamianiman31 August 2018
Munafik = Hypocrite

The original installment made grossing history of collecting approximately RM 20 million which is a big leap at that time in Malaysia and its neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Singapore, two and a half years later comes the awaited sequel everyone has been longing for. It is as if you still haven't gotten the idea, Munafik 1 is known to have been the scariest, if not the best horror movie of 2016 in the continent of Asia. Will Munafik 2 live up to its success or will it fall down the dread hole eaten by its own hypocrisy of turning this into a cash-grab movie?

The sequel takes on a heavier and wider approach than the predecessor and that shows the maturity of the progress made for a better film and it pulls off successfully well.

Syamsul Yusof, the director, actor, editor and etc of Munafik 2 (Donald Glover's Malaysia, variety of talents) proves it again that he can break the tire and dire formula of horror films where the first act of the movie is the little to no scariness and lots of draggy parts for merely character developments while the audience thinks if they are watching a horror film or else but this guy... he does it by starting the movie with lots of scares that would make some of you at the edge of your seat not preparing for the demons to appear at all. He will leave you in the hall breathless since the very beginning.

The energy in this movie is so strong and vigorous that constitutes from one effective scene to another which consequently makes your adrenaline rush and sends shivers down your spine. It sends off electricity that gets you nerving and keeps your eyes peel on the big screen. You'll be excited to know more of what's gonna happen next.

How shocked was I when I saw how brilliantly they worked on the technical aspect. The cinematography and lighting are top-notch, I was in awe with the unique inclined camera angles, the blue-green eerie atmosphere and the precision that it takes to construct such creativity to make it sing with the territory of this being a horror film.

My hat tips off for the excellent use of sound effect because this is probably the first Malay movie I solemnly think that is qualified to compete its sound mixing and editing with Hollywood. Plus, the music is paralleled to how the scenes are emotionally portrayed, means that if a scene ought to make you terrified, then the music builds up to its terror.

Syamsul Yusof and Maya Karin have the spotlight for Munafik 2. Syamsul's acting is getting better and better each time, he now knows how to make those nuances of expressions on his face and he plays Ustaz Adam in a very believable way. Maya Karin was in hiatus for a long time in the filmmaking industry, she plays as Sakinah, a woman in distress of having to defend herself and her family from the hypocrite Abu Jar played by Nasir Bilal Khan, as he and his followers is trying to manipulate into seducing her to commit apostasy with his misguided religious teachings. She is good in playing the role except sometimes, I expected her to be better because she could be but she's a bit lacking this time unlike her acting in Pontianak: Harum Sundal Malam. The others also contributed great performances.

Believe it or not, I shed tears as the movie comes to a closed credit, it is so hard these days to find a horror film with true powerful good meanings being thrown at us all the time. I love the core values this movie has given us especially when I was sensing the plot is taken bits by bits from Islam's Prophets' ideal stories. Albeit the climax is quite similar to the first, but the message is sublime and the last minute wraps it as a perfect ending.

The negative thing is that there are a few of unintentionally funny moments emerge throughout as the messages do get transmitted to the audience smoothly like a bullseye however, a slight awkwardness comes along because they go over-the-top at achieving something new but bizarre attempts.

Furthermore, a lot of twists and turns happen which most of them are unexpected and great, but there is one particular twist that I totally did not see it coming which should be good in general but I hated it because of lack of rational explanations and of the same reason, the excessive and exaggerated degree of the twist itself.

Verdict: It's a rollercoaster ride from the starting point 'till the finishing line. This is the true definition of a horror movie and a rare one in a good way as it flood with a full spectrum of emotions. Simply crowns as the best Malay and horror movie of 2018 and possibly my top 10 movie this year!

A mess
leonhartxtreme16 September 2018
The movie is a mess. First of all, as a direct sequel, they are inconsistent on their setting. A movie set in current days but nobody have a flashlight. The shaky camera during horror moment is annoying af. The jump scare is so frequent, u left feeling nothing at the horror after 15 minutes in. The movie should only be 1 hour long. They force feed the horror and the emotional part down your throat u just wanna leave after after 1 hour. The script is all over the place. The only good thing about the movie is the acting. Imagine that sucky movie but the actors did a good job acting. That is RM 12.50 i never going to get back.

Absolute thrill ride, with a message.
agentw-009432 September 2018
A HUGE step from the first film, coupled with great cinematography, perfomances and scares, Munafik 2 is a must-watch for southeast-asian horror movies.

A story about a cult terrorizing the other side of a village led by Abuja (Nasir Bilal Khan) which gets Ustaz Adam (Syamsul Yusof) concerned about Sakinah (Maya Karin) and her father's safety. The movie opens up as a continuation from the last. Although, i do wish that they would incorporate much more of the first movie's plot into this one. Nonetheless this makes a terrifying adventure.

The performances and character build is so good that a lot of people in the theatre worry about the safety of our characters. I can't spoil much (since i want this to be spoiler free), but i'll have to say Syamsul Yusof is a genius filmmaker tackling issues in this film such as cults and extreme teachings as well as being patient and moderate during God's tests. I'd also like to mention that the scares really git me. This time it wasn't cheap false scares but genuinely scary jumpscares and tension/ suspense that comes after. The camerawork makes it really hard at times to predict the scare until the film has hinted the full thing. A lot of demons aren't just black-contact-lens-wearing-makeup-filled actors with voice changers in the audio, but legitimate beings that might haunt your dreams if you catch a glimpse fot too long. Also, the dramatic scenes might leave a tear in some viewers seeing how far our protagonists are holding on to their faith during the most stressful times (and scenes) throughout the movie

The ending of the movie might be a let-down for most, but it's actually quite the happy ending. By the end, the message sent is that Allah will test his believers, and that we should be patient and considerate as well as be appreciative of the good we have left before and during calamity strikes.

Over all it was a 9/10 experience with some minor flaws and plotholes that are somewhat answered subliminally. I'd say people overseas should give this movie a chance.

The story is unlogic
animplex14 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
No idea why people are saying this is a 10/10 movie , I mean remember the part when the " ghost " climbs up the tree ?? Yes it's scary but why can't uztad Adam just performs the exorcism while the " ghost " is still inside the building ?? People that trust Abuja are probably that type of person who has no IQ , ABUJA DOESNT EVEN LOOKS LIKE A HOLY MAN , HE LOOKS LIKE A WITCH !!

And I really hate the part when uztad Adam says " it's disgusting like a DOG " lol I really want to punch the person who wrote the script , dog has nothing to do with demonic stuff it should be replace to " demon " instead of dog !!

The ending of this movie is probably made by a bunch of kindergarten kids , so lazy and uncreative and uztad Adam is so cool ! He has no fears of ANYTHING even when the ghost appears in front of him

After all , this movie is not that great movie in my opinion, it has alot of jumpscares . I hope munafik 3 will fix all this craps ( if they will make it )

norfaezah-361371 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Re-enactment of plots from insidious and the conjuring in some parts of the movie. It went quite well in the beginning however it became "KL gangster" towards the end. Need more thoughts to be put in for the ending and the transition from scene to another.. for eg. journey from Ustaz House to the munafik place looked distance in one however become a 3mins walk in the other. From the wet clothings when Ustaz return to his house to hear the dismissal of his mom shows as if the river was right around the corner. Good try but try harder.

haphazard plot lacking believable characterisation
nshdnn1 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film starts where it left off from the previous Munafik 1. Unsurprisingly the plot goes non-linearly making the film more confusing than fascinating. While it could be seen as interesting, the jump between dream and reality makes the film messy.

In addition to that, the plot that drives the film was as though the writers merely took a random plot generator to take ideas from. The ending of the movie was simply put: lazy. It was underwhelming, borrowing extensively from how the prequel ended. It looked largely as if they just wanted to end the movie but could not quite figure out a new way to do so.

The characterisation was terrible. The main villain of the film was so unbelievable that the moment he walked into the screen with his cartoonish shaft, it was almost impossible to take him seriously. Even the plot twist seemed lazy when the writers decided to turn one of the good character into another villain.

I guess the three star was for the jump scares. It's fun to watch with friends but I can assure you, after a while you'd just sit in front of the screen in complete disbelief at how such a terrible film even made it to the big screen.

*Edit: I still get so mad when I think about how paid money to watch such a distasteful movie so I again bumped the ratings down to a 2/10. I was so excited to watch this because of Maya Karin and her acting, as always is good for me but good God, it's like literally nothing could've saved the terrible writing! Not even the decent cinematography! I am so genuinely aghast at how this continues to receive good reviews from people. Believe me, this is not deserving of anything above a 3/10.

Terrible. Over the top cartoon villain
nizzambaharuddin13 January 2020
This movie gets 1 for effort. Too black and white characters, over the top villains, overexaggerated and tangled plots, illogical decisions and choices from the characters, overuse and over reliance on jumpscares, and convenient plot twists and deus ex machina that don't even have any sort of payoff at the end of the film.

I can't even fathom as to why anyone would say this is a good movie. I seriously don't because for me, this is easily the worst Syamsul Yusuf film to date that I have ever seen. Yes, even worse than KL Drift.

cheap jumpscares, poor editing, watch Dukun instead
zelomatobap11 December 2019
There's some good exorcism scene but mostly this film suffer from bad film editing and too many repetitive jumpscares that non stop throughout the film. Not to mention the poor sound editing and bad script. Mostly people point out the message that the movie delivered but unfortunately thats not the case, here, this film itself is bad.

Simplistic. Fake storyline.
shamielfikri4 February 2019
The fact that this movie has been highly rated by most of Malaysian has really downgrading the reputation of both, the Malaysians' taste and their film industries.

There is no debate on the cinematography and the high quality of the effects presented as those are the compulsory elements required in a movie with a horror genre. The story is consisting with the series of both, creeping and shocking scenes that make a movie as a thrilling 2 hours moment of difficulties for the viewers to breath calmly.

Yes. All those are some of the small achievement for Malaysian filming industries in the genre of horror. But not an adequate one to be rated highly if we want to speak on the rest about this movie.

The scenario taken as a background is a local village which should be good enough to potray the slice of life of the locals with a supersitious belief and the struggle to enlighten them with the truth. But, the characters and the plot of the movie is very fake. Both the protagonist and the antagonist came from out of the world with a very alien and unrealistic characters. Firstly the protagonist, 'Adam' played by Shamsul Yusuf. No matter how the ending for him in the end, he already died in the beginning of the movie with a very absurd and fake characters and dialogues. Shamsul Yusuf is trying so hard untill the struggle looks too obvious for him.

As for the antagonist, Abuja played by Nasir Bilal Khan. NBK is a great actor. But Abuja is a very bad example for an antagonist character in a movie entitled 'Munafik' (Arabic: Hypocrite). Abuja character seem to be very theoritical with the character of Abu Jahal and Abu Lahab as describe in Holy Quran and the 'Sirah' even it is truth, it is very unadopted character to be potray in world today.

Nasir Bilal Khan does not meet even the minimum requirement of the protagonist with a high caliber of a very influental and charismatic protagonist as Abuja who have a lot powers and followers as he should be. This left a big question on how nonsense for this kind of character to be a very powerful one that raise all the conflicts in the movies. If it is not Nasir Bilal Khan acting weakness, it must be the director's who is very simplistic to introduce this kind of character which add more fake element in this movie. The characters are very easy to be intepreted. A protagonist always with a good and noble actions and words, while the antagonist always a hot tempered guy with a badass face and a hard spoken voice. This is just a typical standard of Malaysian film like others.

There are so many scenes where it is too obvious that the director always trying so hard to find just another suitable situation to add more creepy moments. And it is too obvious that everything is made up only to ensure people are screaming in the cinema. Just "one more scene" And in the end it just cause "one more points" added for the obvious fakeness of the plot.

Besides the plot and the characters, the narrative of trying to relate a demonic existence with 'Dajjal' is again too simplistic. This is actually not a suprise for a SKOP Production movie created by the Yusuf Brothers, (Shafiq and Shamsul). For example in Desolasi (2016) Shafiq Yusuf tried so hard to include the narrative of Illumination, 'Dajjal', Antichrist and all those conspiracy theory even it is so remote to be potrayed in a Sci-Fiction Genre!

As for Munafik 2, the same attempt found. The filmaker should research more on the matter before simply present the ideas for the sake of having some messages and morals of the film, or just a justification required to say "this film is to enlight our people" which is as for a sceptical people like me, I will simply said it is crap and just a cheap marketing. There are so many religous intepretation toward the scripture on "Dajjal" that should be taken into consideration. Even among many of the reliable source in Islam intepret the scripture on 'Dajjal' as a more global event involving a matter of politics and the public society in a larger scale of the world, more than just a story of an exorcism in a small village. This inacurrate narrative make this film to be a comedy written with not a proper purpose or could be no purpose at all besides just causing people screaming in cinemas while some might just laughing at it.

Long drawn out sermon with a cliche ending...
drmayat10 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this with my wife. We both were bored to tears. Lots of why didn't they do that? where is the logic? The villains were just evil. What's their motivation/backstory? or was I too bored to pay attention. The movie is anti-climatic since you know who's the villain and and spooks are conjured via witchcraft. So, no suspence there. The usual jump scares and possession. And at the end I told my wife there would be thunder and lightning and it will save the day. True enough. A cliche "duex ex machina" kind of ending. So unsatisfying.

I was bored, not at the movie, but the long holiday and having nothing to do, so while just wandering at the mall, I decided to just pop in and watch munafik2.

Seeing it at as a malay, malaysia horror production, I have zero expectation other than just being disappointed.

Long story short, I was soooooo wrong, absolutely entertaining and I enjoyed it very much!

There's a few cringy scene, but all in all, it's good and I love this way more than #The Nun!
