Also, the joint venture between Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery is slated to cost between $40 and $50.
ESPN has been at the center of some of the biggest discussions in the streaming world for the past six weeks as the worldwide leader in sports is set to extend its move into streaming even further than it already has with its current direct-to-consumer (Dtc) offering ESPN+. In addition to the joint venture that the sports leader is entering into with Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery and is scheduled to launch this fall, ESPN is preparing to debut its own standalone streaming service that will finally encompass all of the myriad sports rights that the company owns. On Wednesday, The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported that this streamer will cost between $25-$30 when it launches as early as August 2025.
Having been in the works for nearly a year, Esn’s Dtc service is scheduled to launch next fall.

Disney wants to sell a minority stake in ESPN to one or more companies/sports leagues, and it could be in for a hefty payday when it does.
Money comes and money goes. Disney is finding that out this week, as the company agreed in principle to pay at least $8.61 billion for Comcast’s stake in Hulu on Wednesday evening. The total price could be higher once all the math is done, but either way, it’s a considerable investment on Disney’s part. Still, if Bank of America analysts are correct, Disney could be poised to recoup some of that cash in short order.
BofA analysis suggests ESPN might be worth as much as $24 billion. The information will be crucial as Disney attempts to seek strategic partnerships for ESPN. The company could sell as much as 36% of ESPN and still retain majority control. How Much for That ESPN in the Window?...

Disney offered a glimpse of ESPN as a standalone business, and revealed that while the channel is still profitable, cord cutting is definitely having an effect on its bottom line.
Cable doesn’t have a lot of pillars left to lean on, but one of the strongest remaining is live sports. ESPN was rated as the most in-demand cable channel of them all in a September survey, as 74% of respondents identified it as a “must-have” channel.
Disney revealed this week that profits at ESPN have dipped by 20% in 2023. ESPN is looking for multiple partners to purchase minority stakes as it pivots to streaming. Cable revenues will continue to dwindle with cord-cutting, demonstrating why distribution of a new ESPN streamer is critical to Disney executives. Desperation breeds compromise, and Disney found that out the hard way in its recent carriage dispute with Spectrum, the second-largest cable provider in the United States. Disney had to give into a demand it held out against for a long time to get its channels back on the air on Spectrum; granting Spectrum customers access to ad-supported Disney+ at no cost.
The deal will also lead to the creation of a new, sports-focused tier of Spectrum TV that will include login credentials for ESPN+. When Disney launches a standalone, streaming version of ESPN that doesn’t require a cable subscription, users of this plan will be able to access it as well.

Disney is once again attempting to flex its sports streaming muscles. A new report from The Wall Street Journal indicates that Major League Baseball has been in early talks with Disney regarding the possibility of streaming the games of select teams in their local markets next season.
The league has been watching the bankruptcy proceedings of one of its biggest local broadcasting partners Diamond Sports Group (Dsg), which owns 19 Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks (RSNs). MLB has been crystal clear throughout the process that it wants its local rights back from Dsg, but so far has only reclaimed two of the 14 teams that Dsg began the year with: the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres.

Cord cutting hasn’t slowed down one iota in 2023. According to data from Nielsen, as reported by Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, 3.1 million customers have dropped a cable, satellite, or live TV streaming subscription between January and August of this year.
The numbers have had an effect on even the most evergreen channels. ESPN has not been immune, either; the channel that 78% of cable viewers rated as a “must-have” in September of last year has fallen behind FS1 in terms of carriage by pay-tv customers. With a half dozen feature films under her belt in just under a decade, Mélanie Laurent will be moving into the fast lane with her next project. As usual, we only have breadcrumb details to work with, but the actress-turned filmmaker is set to move into her seventh feature film next month with one portion of the film being shot on the famed Le Mans circuit.
Titled La grande odalisque and written by Chris Deslandes (with whom Laurent has worked with on The Adopted (2011), Diving (2017) and The Mad Women’s Ball (2021), this is a Gaumont project. We haven’t had any updates on The Nightingale since it was paused, but we imagine this new project is an in-between outing.…...

About Endlessness (Roy Andersson)
“What should I do now that I have lost my faith?” is the question that animates About Endlessness; this being the new film by Roy Andersson, it is delivered in a doctor’s waiting room, over and over again, in a creaky voice, by a dumpy man in late middle age who continues his plaint even after the doctor and his receptionist gruntingly force him outside into the hallway, from whence they can hear him scratching at the door like a zombie. About Endlessness is Roy Andersson’s fourth film of this century; it looks much like the previous three, and nothing like anything else ever made. – Mark A. (full review)

Epix has released the official trailer for “Enslaved,” an upcoming docuseries that will feature three storylines, including one that centers on Samuel L. Jackson’s journey to identify his ancestral tribe.
Here’s Epix’s synopsis for “Enslaved”: “Using new diving technology — such as advanced 3D mapping and ground-penetrating radar — to locate and examine sunken slave ships on three continents, the series reveals an entirely new perspective on the history of the transatlantic slave trade. The series also tracks the efforts of Diving With a Purpose, a collaborating organization with The National Association of Black Scuba Divers, as they search for and locate six slave ships that sank drowning the enslaved humans aboard. Featuring the most dives ever made on sunken slave ships, “Enslaved” also chronicles the first positive identification of a “Freedom Ship,” an American schooner that ferried African American runaways to Canada.”

Though it’s yet to launch in the UK and other parts of Europe, Disney+ has already proven itself to be a major player in North America – thanks in large part to its suite of digital content, which ranges from Marvel Studios to Star Wars and everything in between.
And much like its online peers, Disney+ is still to roll out a fresh wave of content for April 2020, beginning with Doctor Dolittle on April 1st – not to be confused with the recent remake starring McU mainstay Robert Downey Jr.
What’s more, April marks Earth Month, so you can expect plenty of eco-friendly documentaries to air via National Geographic. Indeed, it’s fair to say that the Disney+ lineup has fast become one of the most diverse on the market. From new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to age-old classics like Doctor Dolittle, there’s really something for everyone.

The French have a long running history of great film noir with such auteurs as Jean-Pierre Melville, so it becomes all the more intriguing to hear that actress/director Melanie Laurent is putting her Gallic spin on the genre with the feature adaptation of Nic Pizzolatto’s novel Galveston. The pic marks her first English-language speaking directing debut after such titles as Breathe and Plonger. In the film, Ben Foster plays Roy, a New Orleans ex-con who is intended to go…...

Mélanie Laurent hasn’t been onscreen a great deal as of late, but she has the ideal excuse: she’s been busy behind the camera. Following her astounding drama Breathe, she co-directed another feature and now she’s back with two more films. While the Elle Fanning-led Galveston won’t arrive until 2018, at Tiff this year she debuted Plonger, which follows a Spanish photographer who takes up deep-sea diving and falls in love with a French war correspondent.
While it hasn’t been picked up for a release in the United States, it’ll debut in France later this month and now the first trailer has landed. Shaping up to be an other beautiful, emotional feature from the actress-turned-director, hopefully U.S. distributors are taking note. Check out the trailer (no subtitles yet, but we’ll update when they arrive), Tiff synopsis, and poster below for the film starring Gilles Lellouche and Maria Valverde.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival still is over a month from kicking off, but the starry annual event is pulling out zero stops when it comes to its first official slate announcement. The festival will close out with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledo’s “C’est la vie!,” and the Special Presentations section will open with Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, “Lady Bird,” and close with Amr Salama’s “Sheikh Jackson.”
Today’s first glimpse of this year’s programing include a slew of 2017’s most anticipated features, including Guillermo del Toro’s adult fairy tale “The Shape of Water,” Alexander Payne’s Matt Damon-starring comedy “Downsizing,” Darren Aronofsky’s secretive “mother!,” George Clooney’s reportedly uber-violent “Suburbicon,” and Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
And that is just the tip of a very big iceberg, one that today includes the announcement of both Gala and Special Presentations titles.
